GENERAL ISSUES

  1. Achievements are not working!
Achievements are only available in Ironman games. Almost all of them also require the game to start at 11/11/1444 , the first available day.

  2. Cannot run Ironman mode
    - must have the default checksum, no mods that alter the checksum are allowed
    - Steam Client must be running and in online mode
    - must enable Steam Cloud Sync in your Steam client - both overall and for this game in particular.

  3. If you get black flags or shields:
Any one of the following may help depending on your exact situation

    1) disable all mods (and suspend subscription on Steam for those mods)
    2) verify installed files (Steam option)
    3) delete or rename the folder [your documents*]\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV (renaming recommended if you have any valuable files, e.g. saves, you want to keep) NOT the /gfx/ folder under Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 .
    4) Restart the game in a different screen mode (ie. windowed mode if you normally play in borderless or fullscreen) at least once, then return to your regular mode.
    5) delete the game, manually verify all files are deleted, reinstall.

  4. Large screen, high resolution, fonts are too small
The fonts in the game do not scale at all. Either reduce the resolution as needed, or try one of the font mods available in the Steam Workshop.

  5. I subscribe to mods in the Steam Workshop but they never download
Enable Steam Cloud Sync in your Steam client - both overall and for this game in particular.

WINDOWS-SPECIFIC ISSUES

  1. I get weird map graphics (fog of war/terra incognita/terrain textures)
    weird_map_1.jpg
    • Update your video driver - especially Intel ones older than 2013, which are notorious for this problem. Get them from the update site of your laptop vendor or Intel itself; do not bother with the Windows driver update check or the Steam one, they are worthless.
    • It is quite common that a laptop has two graphics cards. In some cases the drivers fails to determine the correct card to be used and the game ends up using the one with low performance. Please make sure that you set your settings (check your graphics control panel) to use the graphics card with the best performance.

Sometimes it helps to remove your entire settings.txt after updating drivers/changing to use of the correct graphics card.
    • Navigate to and open "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\settings.txt"
      Change "force_pow2_textures=" to no.

  2. Whenever I start the game in fullscreen I get a black screen and after a few seconds the game crashes
Navigate to and open "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\settings.txt"
Locate "refreshRate=0" and make sure it is set to an refresh rate your monitor supports (60 Hz is common)
    Ex. refreshRate = 60

  3. Failed to start game (missing executable)
Run a Verify in Steam, then restart Steam. Make sure eu4.exe is whitelisted in your anti-virus app (Comodo in particular)

  4. Error message: [MSVCP100.dll (or similar) is missing.
    Solution: install this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555 then
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328

  5. Error message: d3dx9_41.dll (or similar) is missing.
    Solution: install this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

This fix can also be required even when this error message is not shown by Windows (this particularly seems to happen in Win8). Check for d3dx9_41.dll and d3dx9_43.dll in your c:\windows\system32\ directory. The symptom is that the Launcher lists no DLCs or Mods, and if you hit Play the game does not start. Can often be the case after installing the game on a new machine or after a Windows re-install.
  6. The game does not start:
Right click steamapps/common/Europa Universalis IV/eu4.exe, set compatibility to run in 640 X 480, then start from this .exe. Adjust your resolution through the in-game options and exit the game. Remove the check from 640 X 480 box and start the game from steam library.
  7. The game does not start:
A VPN app called Evolve will stop the game running at all. We used to recommend uninstalling it, but now it looks like just turning off its overlay is enough. This has been reported to Evolve. This has also been found to be true of the MSI Gaming App.
  1. Game runs in Windowed mode but freezes in FullScreen mode
This is caused by Comodo anti-virus program. No known fix as yet, please contact Comodo and report the problem.

  2. To stop the 'installing for the first time, c++ etc' messages
Get rid of the 'installscript.vdf' file in your 'Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV' folder.

  3. Countries show as Zxx instead of the actual names
    - Find the file "converted_countries_l_english.yml" in C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\eu4_export\mod\<savegame>\localisation
    - Open it with Notepad++ and "save as", and make sure it is using UTF-8 encoding
LINUX-SPECIFIC ISSUES
  1. Countries show as Zxx instead of the actual names
    - Go to your ck2 directory: cd $HOME/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/eu4_export
    - Got to mod/<your-save-name>/localisation dir: cd mod/<your-save-name>/localisation
    - To convert run: for file in *.yml; do iconv -t UTF8 -o ${file}.utf8 $file; mv ${file}.utf8 $file; done

  2. No sound in the Linux version

  3. Display Tearing fixed

  4. How to use alternative graphics card on Linux
    https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...How-to-use-alternative-graphics-card-on-Linux

  5. Strange black/grey graphical artifacts on the map
Especially towards the top-left corner. This is a long-standing unfixed bug, just disable Shadows in the game's visual settings.

MAC-SPECIFIC ISSUES
  1. Borderless mode, isn't.
In Borderless mode the top bar of the OS X window still displays. This is a long-standing bug for which there is no current fix or workaround, sorry.

  2. Strange black/grey graphical artifacts on the map
Especially towards the top-left corner. This is a long-standing unfixed bug, just disable Shadows in the game's visual settings.

  3. Cannot move troops by land, they insist on naval transports

    - get a refund for Art of War from wherever you bought it
    - play on Windows or Linux only
    - use a mouse with two or more buttons (if this is the single button mouse issue)
    - reconfigure the trackpad to allow right click with a gesture (secondary click, they call it in MacOS)

The files in .../referenced/ are real and not corrupted, but they do use a non-standard compression format which may not be recognized by common archivers like WinRAR. You should be able to open them with 7-Zip. I posted instructions how to manually install Workshop mods in another thread some time ago (perhaps this could be added to a sticky thread somewhere?):

As a band-aid solution for people who can't make Workshop exclusive mods work, follow these instructions:
1. Subscribe to the mod you want in the Workshop. Steam client will begin a download of EU4 Workshop Content.
2. Once the download is completed, go to .../Steam/userdata/[user_id_number]/ugc/referenced/[18-digit_mod_id_number]/mod. It will contain the .zip archive of the mod. If there are multiple 18-digit folders, look around for the one that contains the mod you want.
3. Copy the archive to your mod folder (the one in Documents).
4. From the archive, extract only the file descriptor.mod and place it in the same folder.
5. Rename descriptor.mod to match the name of the mod's .zip archive (e.g., if you have better_ti.zip, rename descriptor.mod to better_ti.mod).
6. Start the game - the mod should be listed in the launcher, activate it there (or, if you're using Mac or Linux, in Steam right-click EU4, go to Properties -> Set Launch Options and add: '-mod=mod/[name].mod').

If you have trouble opening the .zip or extracting descriptor.mod, try using a different archiver - 7-Zip should do the trick.
