Foreword:
Hi all! I've been reading AARs on the Paradox Forums for years, but have never had the dedication to see through one of my own. I've been inspired, excited, and greatly entertained by the stories that I've been lucky enough to encounter on this forum, and look forward to participating in some small fashion. Please feel free to provide any feedback, ask any questions, and make any suggestions.
I'm not positive what my update schedule will be like.

1. Opening Moves

Batyl is a dream: a dream of progress, of light, of discovery, of renaissance upon renaissance.
It is a dream that has galvanized generations, driven industries, built monuments, and inspired innovation.
It is a dream that has let us seize the world around us and become its undisputed masters.
It is a dream that has led us to space, and will one day grant us all of the stars twinkling in its endless night.
But, for today at least, it is just a dream.

(Setting the stage. Nothing too outrageous here.)

Previous generations, at times, questioned the value of our Technocracy.
Words like "freedom" and "faith" were used as rallying cries by these belligerents, though any right-thinking mind would know what they really rallied behind was fear.
Sometimes unfortunate measures were necessary to return the misguided into the arms of proper society.
We Batyli live a long time and, with wisdom, can learn from the mistakes of the past.

(We'll be seeing a lot of this particular gentleman.)
Ruthjara "the Icon" is a fitting name for the first Ismir-class Science Vessel of the Batyli Dominion.
Darmug "the Roamer" is her proud head scientist - an excellent candidate who appreciates the value of expediency.

(Hot damn, that's a lot of minerals!)
Batyl is a gift to us from the universe. It is our home, our cradle.
Our ancestors, reveling in its gifts, could not have appreciated how inefficient many of their settlements were.
It will take heavy investment in reconstruction efforts to better optimize the output of our world in order to better enable our exploration and settlement programs.

While The Icon is preoccupied surveying local space, the Ythamm class Corvettes of the 1st Armada have been inspecting every star system within range of our first Wormhole Station.
Admiral Rhass' famed rapid tactics during holographic combat simulations made them an ideal candidate for the position.
With any luck, the initial inspections will be over quickly and without undue incidents.

(Maybe not the prettiest survey pattern, but it'll do.)

Overlord Yndan's guidance has led the Batyli people into the stars and will surely lead them to dominance over them.
Ready to militarize if necessary, but more than contented to study the mysteries of the universe otherwise.
For the time being, the Dominion has no need for a fleet of warships.

Technological progress should be our people's highest priority.
Nonconformity is permissible, so long as it is productive.
If any malcontents do arise, our time honored reeducation programs should be effective in treating any deviancy.

(And with that, we're ready to un-pause.)

2. Out of The Cradle

Friends of the Dominion, today is a joyous day!

Today we begin construction of our people's first great colony ship.
All that remains is to decide upon its destination.
As you no doubt know, these last four years have been an exciting time for all Batyli.

We have developed new scientific facilities.

We have optimized our power grids.

The Iolam System was the 1st Fleet's first stop on its tour of our stellar neighborhood.
It would prove to be a fortuitous first stop.

Almost immediately, it became clear to scientists attached to the 1st Fleet that Iolam II was teeming with life.

Among the first examples of life that we found were species of particularly dangerous pack hunting apex predators.
While we have dealt with dangerous wildlife on our own home world, these new species' alien nature makes them all the more terrifying and exhilarating.

Soon after, a second habitable world was found in the Rammas System.
It too was host to dangerous lifeforms, and was strangely bereft of mineral deposits.

And a third in the Fujeau System.
Smaller than the first two, and only home to untamed swamp and rainforest.

And a fourth in the Girtab System.
The smallest of them all, home to dangerous predators, though easily enough settled.

We have also found, in our survey, that we do not wander the stars alone.
Monstrous entities of pure energy,
Automated drones built by absent masters,
and gigantic space-dwelling lifeforms.
Certainly, each has lessons to teach us.
None of these, however, seem to possess the spark of intelligence.
If it were not for a discovery in the Fujeau System, we may have believed ourselves to be alone - at least in this stellar neighborhood.

From what we have been able to tell from transmissions emanating from their world, they are called the Ikarzuri.
In many ways, they look much like ourselves and, indeed, are a handsome species.
Still, their media broadcasts and communications networks carry worrying news:
They are a xenophobic and spiritualistic people.
If they are allowed to join us in the stars, it seems likely that they would not do so as our friends.
It is certainly not our right to wipe their orbital platforms from the skies and lay their cities to ruin,
though it is a tempting thought.
Rather, the Directorate has decreed that the enlightenment of this backward race should be our highest priority.
While the potential colonies of Iolam, Rammas, and Girtab were promising, Fujeau has been selected as the location for our first colony.

Here is an overview of our immediate stellar neighborhood, as well as a quick glance at the Dominion's development.

Lots of space for potential expansion around you. Great news!

3. Growing Pains / The Lost Fleet Crisis

Although there were colonial prospects that were in some ways more ideal candidates for settlement than Fujeau VI, the strategic importance of containing and controlling the rapidly ascending Ikarzuri was deemed too significant to delay. The colony of Fujeau VI would be designated as Fujeau Prime. It was perhaps not a poetic or flowery name, but it was an appropriate one all the same.

In an ideal universe, there would have been more time for deliberation and planning.
Perhaps the Ikarzuri could be guided more gently and indirectly, and a more favorable world chosen for the first Batyli colony. Delayed gratification is a sacrifice necessary for continued security and prosperity.

By the end of the year, the colony had transformed from schematics and aspirations into a small city.
Nothing rivaling any of the great planned communities or metropolises of Batyl herself, but still something worth being proud of.

Newly developed exoskeletons were deployed to the frontier, in the interest of hastening colonial development.
As operational data trickled back to Batyl, modifications were implemented and newer models devised.
Soon even the smallest mining operations, security forces, and construction cooperatives were outfitted with these beautiful works of mechanical engineering.

Almost immediately after Fujeau Prime was settled, a sizable amount of resources were diverted from colonial development and utilized in the construction of an orbital observation station above "Jurg-Faliigh." At first, the station was lightly staffed and only passively studied the Ikarzuri civilization below. Less than six months after the station's fabrication process had began, however, the staff was assigned a much more important task: enlightenment.

The energy demands of enlightening the Ikarzuri, as well as the necessary scientific and intellectual commitment to provide them with direct mentorship, was a heavy drain on the Dominion's already taxed interstellar energy grid. Incremental innovation was necessary to stabilize the energy loss, and large scale renovations to existing facilities were necessary to recover from it.

Some members of the Dominion were not keen to see aliens, especially those so antithetical to traditional Batyli values, given so much support. These reactionaries, calling themselves the "Lost Fleet", rallied together a small force of corsairs and outlaws. Too small to challenge the Dominion's fleet directly, but -perhaps- large enough to launch a genocidal assault against the backward Ikarzuri. Even if unsuccessful, their assault would cast a looming shadow over Batyli-Ikarzuri relations. Their ambitions would not be allowed to succeed.

A preemptive strike into a Lost Fleet staging area in the Iolam system was an unparalleled success. The 1st Fleet, now more appropriately called the 1st Armada, was given its first taste of real combat - and served valiantly. The immediate threat to the Ikarzuri was eliminated - far before they had become aware that they were in any danger at all.

The idea of static fortifications in space had not been a popular one until the Lost Fleet Crisis made strategic thinkers of the Dominion aware of just how vulnerable many Batyli assets were - developing colonies in particular. Although the crisis would end before the construction of any such fortification became necessary, the idea had taken root.

After the wreckage in the Iolam System was thoroughly investigated, surviving navigation computer data was salvaged - pointing to the hitherto unknown Lost Fleet headquarters in the Gamma Draconis System. The 1st Armada was rallied and, through the noble sacrifice of four corvettes, crushed the insurgent threat once and for all. Some of the families of those that were lost felt resentment toward the backward Ikarzuri - who remained ignorant of the Batyli lives shed in their protection.

Less than three months later, the Ikarzuri launched their first wormhole drive capable vessel - joining the Batyli Dominion in the vastness of space. The former Batyli observation outpost was converted for use as a rudimentary space station, although most of the Batyli delegation stayed on as observers and advisers to the newly founded Ikarzuri Kingdom.

A few years of sharing technology and scientific knowledge is not enough to change a people. Even the most optimistic estimations never expected the Ikarzuri to share Batyli values.

All the same, Batyli advisers will stay on in the Ikarzuri Kingdom. Their development will be guided and directed according to our own. In time, the great hope is that the Ikarzuri will be made to see reason or, at the very least, to respect it.

That's some serious bad feelings between subject and overlord.:p

5. No News Is Good News

There is an expression that goes: "No news is good news." In the case of enlightening a potentially belligerent race, this is most certainly the case. Much to the surprise of the more pessimistic voices in the Dominion, the best word to describe the aftermath of Ikarzuri enlightenment would be "calm."

Imparting lessons to the Ikarzuri that most Batyli scientists found to be trivial proved to be a strong motivator to place an ever greater emphasis on technological and scientific development. If the Ikarzuri seemed primitive to Batyl - might the Dominion appear primitive to others? A frightening possibility.

Fujeau Prime, as a member world of the Batyl Dominion, was in need of a wormhole station. The reasons for this were twofold. First, to further expand the frontier accessible to Batyli ships. Second, and perhaps more importantly, to serve as a backup to the wormhole station in Uthon. Redundancies might not be necessary - but they are certainly a wise precaution.
The 1st Armada was assigned to a standard pattern reconnoiter of the newly accessible systems.

More strange examples of the dangers of the void. In time, they would make excellent subjects of numerous studies.

While occasionally difficult, and perhaps not immediately profitable, the enlightenment of the Ikarzuri placed a confidence in the minds of many Batyli: Not only did they belong in space, but they also had a right to assert themselves over others - particularly if those others were backward and misguided.

New industries would be necessary for this ambition, as well as more efficient exploitation of known resources.

Forays into the development of rudimentary artificial intelligence showed promising results as well. While any promise of truly synthetic minds or a technological singularity were distant, the immediate results were still significant: improved learning and predictive algorithms would help to alleviate the intellectual burden placed upon the Batyli scientific elite.

While centuries of habitation had left Batyl easily settled, it was made quite clear by colonial expeditions and orbital surveys that taming the wild landscapes and biospheres of newly colonized worlds would take a very intentional effort. In classic tradition, the first geographic obstacle overcome were swampy lands - easily enough drained and reclaimed by a combination of centuries-old techniques and bleeding-edge technologies.

While not openly hostile, the leadership of the Ikarzuri Kingdom sent their first indication of discontent. The only surprise to Batyli leadership was that it took as long as it had, though the incident was reason enough to fortify the 1st Fleet and begin training ground assault troops - just in case the worst were to come to pass. While mildly irritating, this insult was not seen as immediately threatening.

Hoping for a peaceful resolution!

6. Ancient Whisperings

If war were to become a necessity, improved power sources for Batyli warships might make the difference between defeat and victory. Although there are potential arguments for the usage of these fusion plants to power vessels of scientific discovery or diplomatic importance - the simple truth is that the only real use for fusion is to power weapons of war.

As surveyors continue their work on the myriad of worlds discovered by the Batyli Dominion, the classical study of life sciences has been subjected to severe revision, modification, and re-imagining. The potential of alien life to help rewrite Batyli scientific canon is truly exciting.

Armor is not a revolutionary concept. Even the most primitive of civilizations eventually come to the realization that strapping material onto something - whether it be leather or iron or yet unheard of materials - greatly improves its survivability. Batyli skirmishes during the Lost Fleet Crisis, as well as with the strange aggressive lifeforms that call the void between worlds home, have made clear the need for increased defensive measures on our ships.

"Cybrex." A strange name for a horrific and ancient race. Batyli scientists have been encouraged to seek out the artifacts and ruins left behind by this hopefully departed race - carefully.

If other races are out there, it might be wise for the Dominion to prepare - lest we suffer the fate of those set upon by the Cybrex.

The Cybrex are not the only new example of life that the Batyli Dominion has come across. It is becoming very clear that life is not only not uncommon, but it also comes in forms and shapes that our ancestors never could have imagined. Importantly, evidence is mounting that the Cybrex were not the only race to predate our stepping out into the void. If other species have walked these spaces between world before, it is not a huge leap to suspect that others might still.

The potential of relatively simple farming methods combined with the exploitation of new alien flora specimens has expanded our agricultural potential. While cross-breeding and gene-splicing programs have only just begun, the preliminary results are promising.

Improved propulsion technology is important, though perhaps not as much as might be at first imagined. While it is true that ion thrusters and derivative technologies will benefit our ships moving within a gravity well, improving on the speed of the wormhole drives of Batyli ships seems, for the time being, impossible.

The Ikarzuri have, with the help of the Batyli Dominion, finally reached a level of advancement similar to our own. Integration of the Ikarzuri Kingdom into the greater Dominion was begun immediately - and with much enthusiasm.

Shortly after, the colony ship Dorlan The Tyrant was sent to settle the Girtab system.

Mining on an interstellar scale is a completely new field for the Batyli Dominion. As time goes by, we will continue to make marginal improvements and to better develop our ability to affect the universe around us.

In anticipation of the integration of the Ikarzuri Kingdom, research initiatives have been put forward to help ease their transition into the Dominion. Batyli society, from top to bottom, must be reanalyzed with consideration to the needs and comforts of alien species.

The next phase of Ikarzuri integration took a little under two years. This process continued without protest from any major power from within either the Kingdom or the Dominion. Looking forward, there will certainly be difficulties in incorporating our two peoples into a greater whole - but we will do so together, for better or for worse.

So many potential colonies...*drool*

7. Resistance

Ikar-kin, the Resistance hears your cries of displeasure. We too feel the betrayal of our traditional values by these alien antagonist Batyli. We too feel the rage of becoming subjects to unworthy masters. The Divine Right of the monarchy cannot be dismissed - or assumed - by this "Dominion." Our souls will languish forever in this realm if the puppets appointed by the Dominion continue to lead us astray. Resistance is the only path, the divine path. Rise up and reclaim what is rightfully ours. Jurg-Faliigh can be free, but only if we act together.

Our greedy overlords are not content with imposing themselves onto a world under our sun. They spread like the Plagues of old, without consideration to the corruption that they bring with them. If we do not make a stand, who knows how many other stars and worlds will suffer their unrightful rule?

Their advancements cannot be denied. Their slavish dedication to the sciences, while granting them material strength, saps away from their Vital Essence and will leave them Husks in the Everafter. No mechanical wonder can compare to the Vital Gift that has been bestowed onto our people. No technological curiosity can overcome our force of will. We will remain pure. We will remain true. We will not be fettered or led astray like those in the Proverbs of The Hishi. Our people have always overcome. Our people will always overcome.

Even as they uncover ruins of the misguided that have traveled the stars before them, they fail to learn even the most obvious lessons or beware the most clear of portends. The ancient Chronicles tell us the fate of those who conquer without the consent of the Divine, without the guidance of those in the Everafter. They sow the seeds of their own undoing.

They think that we can be swayed, that we are weak of will and of spirit. Their restrictions and propaganda will fall on deaf ears, my fellow Ikan-kin. We are resolute. We will be free.

Yes, there are those among us who have gone along to their alien cause like slackhounds to the slaughter. The puppet leadership and their army of Husks will not survive us, will not compel us, will not dissuade us. The lives of Ikarzuri have been given for the benefit of all before, and will be given again.

We must bind ourselves together and smash down those that serve the Dominion. We must destroy anything that is of use to them, anything that they might use against us. We thrived on this world for millennia using nothing but our naked forms and the Divinity within us. These material losses are nothing.

Even now, news reaches us of other species - ones who might rival the strength of the Dominion. If we show them our Strength and Divinity, they will be persuaded to support our cause. It is the Batyli who should serve the Ikarzuri. When that day comes, perhaps then they will pray.

Seems like they are of equal size (and perhaps also strength?).

Preliminary investigation into potential usage of energy weaponry. Results promising.

13.jpg

2238.3
Experiments with small amounts of exotic material suggest potential for new power source. Until a steady supply can be secured, this is not practically utilizable.

14.jpg

15.jpg

2238.07
New constitution grants full and equal rights to all organic citizens, reducing tensions between member race populations. Although law allows for non-Batyli leadership, the shorter lifespans of Ikarzuri make them less promising candidates.

16.jpg

2240.11
Anti-missile ship defense research and design complete. Technology will not be immediately utilized.

17.jpg

18.jpg

2240.11
Alien species "Uthonians" discovered on "Tishac." Fellow materialists, they will likely integrate into Dominion society with greater ease than the Ikarzuri. Tishac itself would be an ideal planet for Batyli settlement. Frontier outpost deployed, observation outpost under construction, wormhole station complete.

19.jpg

2241.11
Life surveyed on the desert world of Voon Ia shows signs suggesting a rigorously engineered biosphere. Further study is necessary, but promising theories already abound.

20.jpg

2242.1
Security sweep of newly accessible systems via the Tishac wormhole station. This will mark the first forray into Yv'Zorak Directorate territory. Signs of Directorate expansion into the frontier undeniable. Counter-expansion may be necessary, but impossible due to cost of reeducation campaigns underway on Jurg-Faliigh.

Xeno leadership. I applaud you, good....humanitarian? Xenotarian?
As far as the leaders of the Batyli Dominion are concerned, it was the only pragmatic choice. The Ikarzuri are potentially incredibly dangerous. Resilient + Very Strong = +40% Army Attack, +100% Garrison Health. As enemies or rebels, they'd be a huge pain to fight on the ground. If/when they can be fully integrated and assimilated, they are likely to be the best soldiers in this particular galaxy. /Any/ potential source of happiness or reduction of ethics divergence is helpful, hence why the Dominion has been (and will be) hemorrhaging influence to keep information quarantine, propaganda broadcasts, and reeducation campaigns running.

The whole affair has been an unexpected handicap, though a fun challenge to manage.

7. The Last Quadrant

1.jpg

2242.12
"Continental Worlds": an innocuous name for an innocuous planet type. Essentially, these worlds are just like Batyl and other tropical planets, only colder and more barren. While life has survived, and sometimes even thrived, it has done so outside of the warm comfort of our homeworld. Any life, sentient or otherwise, from these worlds should be pitied that they have not had the pleasure of evolving on a tropical paradise world like our own.

2.jpg

2243.4
Deflectors keep ships safe. Damage to armor plating must be repaired, but damaged deflector screens can simply be recharged and reinforced in the field. While armor plating will never be completely phased out, it seems clear that innovations in shielding technologies will be the best way forward for the Dominion's armada.

3.jpg

2244.1
Khor Prime is the first continental world to be settled by the Dominion. While not an ideal colony, it's strategic position near the Yv'Zorak border made it an obvious choice for settlement.

4.jpg

5.jpg

2244.03
The silence of The Last Quadrant is broken by contact from the Djunn Republic. Peaceful, spiritual, and individualistic in nature - they seem harmless enough. While it is clear that they, like the Yv'Zorak Directorate, reached the stars before the Dominion, they do not seem to be an immediate threat to Dominion security.

6.jpg

2244.8
War does not seem to be on the immediate horizon. Still, the armada's brief encounter with the ships of the Djomar Unity make it quite clear that our armada is severely outnumbered and outclassed. Initial surveys of Djunn and Yv'Zorak fleets suggest that both are larger and more technically complex than our own. While we are fortunate that neither have any immediate designs on our sovereignty, the development of our fleet to a competitive state is the only way that our safety can be guaranteed.

7.jpg

2244.10
The completion of a wormhole station in the Khor system allows for a continued security sweep of nearby Yv'Zorak space.

8.jpg

2245.05
As the Dominion's reach stretches further and further, it has become increasingly obvious that delegation of colonial management is necessary to maintain a certain level of efficiency in interplanetary governance. The Girtab system is the first to be granted a certain degree of autonomy, though many more are sure to follow.

9.jpg

2245.9
Although defensive station production has been postponed until a more static border with the Yv'Zorak Directorate has been established, excited thought has gone into the designing process of these potential facilities.

10.jpg

2246.02
Security sweep from the Khor wormhole station.

11.jpg

2246.3
Iolam Secundus, another Continental World, is colonized. Having the benefit of being in an already settled system, the political power and influence necessary to organize the operation was negligible.

12.jpg

2247.5
Advanced combat computers have the potential to give the edge to our brave ship-bound crews. Although the skills of our pilots, admirals, and other voidcraft crew are exemplary, biological minds do have finite limitations - limitations that can be augmented with the assistance of predictive algorithms and advanced fire-control software.

13.jpg

2247.08
Experiments with the substance known as Garanthium have proved wildly promising. If a large enough source can be secured and utilized in the construction of new ships or the renovation of older craft, it has the potential to add significant staying power to our fleet and suvivability to its crews.

14.jpg

2248.7
Ambor Prime becomes the third Continental World settled to date. Located to the galactic "South" of Yv'Zorak space, it will be helpful in establishing an effective zone of influence necessary to solidify our borders.

15.jpg

2249.3
Security sweep through the new Ambor wormhole station.

16.jpg

2249.5
Mass driver technology has certain potential merits, though it seems awfully crude and brutish in comparison to the precision of laser weaponry or the tactical edge of missile technology.

17.jpg

2249.7
The Directorate begins the first steps toward large-scale genetic modification. Initial goals include adapting settlers to Continental worlds, removing the solitary qualities innate to the Ikarzuri, and allowing tailor-made sub-Batyli who will be better able to settle increasingly exotic worlds.

Summary:
18.jpg

Ythamm-class Corvette mk III
Trading an improved combat computer and new torpedo bays for prior deflector screens.

19.jpg

Daskall-class Destroyer mk II
This model features new torpedo bays, a point defense grid, enhanced combat computers, and increased deflector shielding.

Space as we know it

Uplift. A great tech for domination of the galaxy.

8. Rise of the Collective

1.jpg

2249.12
The Iolam system is granted Sector status, allowing the central Dominion administration to focus on further colonial development.

2.jpg

2250.5, 2257.7
As administrative focus shifts to expanding the Dominion's holdings on new colonies, separatist rioting resumes on Jurg-Faliigh. Damaged buildings and infrastructure are immediately repaired, at some cost.

3.jpg

2251.2
Experiments with the exotic substance pitharan have shown promising results. While large scale implementation will wait until a larger supply can be secured, ship designers have already begun to scheme at the possibilities.

4.jpg

2252.6
Azax Prime, another continental world, is settled by the colony ship Linntyl the Sharp.

5.jpg

2253.4
Colonial centralization policies have been enacted to help offset the administrative strain of expanding colonial holdings while attempting to contain the continued unrest on Jurg-Faliigh.

6.jpg

2253.7
Advancements in point defense systems show great promise. Rather than independent systems, the improved models will integrate coordinated fire-control systems.

7.jpg

2254.7
The Kor Sector is established on the Yv'Zorak border.

8.jpg

2254.2
Ceramo-Metallic armor advancements promise more efficient defenses on future ships.

9.jpg

2258.10
Increasing support for a global research initiative as a hub for the Dominion's academic community has reached a fever-pitch. Designs for the complex have already been drawn up, though member worlds continue to place bids for its placement.

10.jpg

2261.6
As borders solidify and it becomes clear that outward expansion will be limited without outright warfare, the importance of internal development has increased. The improvement of existing facilities, rather than simply building new ones, has seen an increased focus.

11.jpg

2262.5
As diplomats meet with representatives of the Yv'Zorak Directorate to discuss border agreements, efforts are increased to expand the Dominion's existing claims.

12.jpg

2263.1
Improved power systems for Dominion ships are rolled out.

13.jpg

14.jpg

15.jpg

16.jpg

2264.7
In record time, the Uthonian Collective joins the interstellar community as a protectorate of the Dominion. A migratory agreement and technological exchange were immediately instituted, leading to very large population of Batyli scientists and their families settling on the Uthonian world of Tishac. By the end of the decade, Batyli citizens would outnumber the native Uthonians.

17.jpg

2265.2
Advancements continue in energy weapon technologies, although they are not immediately implemented.

18.jpg

Ythamm-class Corvette mk IV
Introduction of cold fusion reactors allow for an increase in the number of deflector screens.

19.jpg

Daskall-class Destroyer mk III
Introduction of cold fusion reactors supports the updating of point defense systems, as well as a slight expansion of the deflector screen.

Nice work you have here. Plus, any title playing on Simon and Garfunkel will naturally grab my attention. I also love how you custom edit a description for your civilization. I do that too!

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, Simon and Garfunkel is amazing music! :)

And some slow colonization by proxy, I see. Not bad.;)

I like the large variety of alien civilizations that are being peacefully integrated into the Dominion. A question, why is Jurg-Faliigh always revolting?

Thanks! I went with that name because, honestly, I expected to run into an advanced start fanatic spiritualist militarist civilization and get steamrolled.

Yeah, Simon and Garfunkel is amazing music! :)

/Very/ slow. Haha.

I like the large variety of alien civilizations that are being peacefully integrated into the Dominion. A question, why is Jurg-Faliigh always revolting?
The Batyli Dominion's ethics are Fanatic Materialist and Xenophile. The native ethics of the Ikarzuri are Collectivist (though this is actually kind of nice), Spiritualist (-10% happiness), and Xenophobe (-5% happiness, and -5% for my enlightenment policies). They're also Solitary (-5% happiness).

It is /insanely/ difficult to counter all of those negative happiness modifiers, particularly because I can't change their ethics unless they're happy enough to have a negative Ethics Divergence modifier. To keep them from revolting, I have to stack on Reeducation Campaigns (-10% Ethics Divergence), Information Quarantine (-10% Ethics Divergence, -5% Research Speed), and Propaganda Broadcasts (+10% Happiness). This is costing me 420 influence every 10 years, which is affordable - but I occasionally want to use influence to colonize things or upgrade buildings and then Jurg-Faliigh gets uppity.

Things are slowly getting easier as I get techs like Xeno Integration and those that give me more Influence. Looking forward, I'm hoping to genetically modify away their Solitary trait, and maybe even add in Communal (+5% Happiness) or Conformist (-10% Ethics Divergence).
Strangely enough, I'm /really/ enjoying how difficult it has been.
