Paradox Interactive and Double Eleven today announced Undead, the eighth and spookiest expansion for Prison Architect. Undead introduces a new objective for players: survival. Undead rise from the grave and can infect anyone they bite, so inmates and guards band together to make it out alive. Prison Architect: Undead arrives in the land of the living when it launches on October 11th for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Barricade the door and entertain yourself with this trailer:

The undead are a relentless bunch and can spread quickly through prison populations. Placing a Graveyard Quick Room adds a bit of spooky flair to your compound, but be ready to deal with the Undead hordes it spawns.

If you can’t manage the outbreak effectively, your prisoners become infected and increase the size of the horde. Whether you call in extra help from bounty hunters or make use of everything at your disposal as a weapon, do whatever it takes to keep your inmates alive.

Undead also introduces the “Undead Overlay” option in Settings, letting players add a layer of darkness and suspense to the creepy content update.

Prison Architect: Undead Key Features (also available in “Escape Mode”):

  • Welcome the Graveyard
This brand new Quick Room satisfies your inmates’ needs for Freedom and Comfort, making them feel calmer for 12 hours. Be mindful when you add gravestones though, as they will easily interrupt this peaceful atmosphere…
  • The Rise of the Dead
In Undead, no one is safe. And there are many ways to become infected. One inmate can get sick, some others can be bitten by an unfriendly undead, or again a bunch of infected inmates can rise (aka spawn) directly from the Graveyard. Wardens have no power over the Infected units, they will move and act independently in the prison until stopped. Inmates and guards can try and fight them off, but if they fail, they will join the deadly bunch!
  • Who you gonna call? Bounty Hunters!
When things go south (because they will) and your prison can’t hold off the outbreak, call the Bounty Hunter Emergency Service: tough, trained bounty hunters will join your fight against the undead.
  • New traps, techniques, and weapons
Desperate times call for desperate (and creative) measures. Use Undead chum to lure the undead, build a walled-off area and lock them inside, or steal that glorious chainsaw you’ve been eyeing for a while: everything is allowed to fight off the horde.

The Kickstand
Launching alongside the Undead expansion is The Kickstand, a FREE update available to all players. This update brings a range of additions and improvements to the game. Two new dogs, Corgis and Siberian Huskies, arrive for some cuddly fun, and three quickrooms expand your prisons: Security, Kennel, and Parole. Additionally, cameras can now be locked and monitors can be made a priority for guards. Courtesy of community feedback, we’ve also added a new empty room that players can use to separate prisons into different sectors without the need to wall them off.

this is so far away from the idea of managing a prison I'm not sure what to say.

ADD A FLAME THROWER GUY FOR TOTAL ESCALATION HAHAHAH, or any other kind of direct control for the mercs like with the Firemen as it would be AWESOME

Also, PLEASE respond to the community more directly and actively regarding bugs, such as the unmoddable gang colors one. It's very frustating getting no response. That way I don't know if you either declined the change, will release it in the next update or haven't seen it yet making me ask you again.

PS: I absolutley love the polaroids in this game, and I'd adore it if you added new ones for the DLCs.

Since the acquisition of Prison Architect by Paradox there was some great stuff. But this is far beyond the original idea, surely there must be something better you can do with the title than the ''always creative and fun mode of zombies'' . This is a prison sim! What the hell is this supposed to be? Ran out of ideas but you MUST keep making dlc's? I am at a loss, and I really think you went astray with this.

I think this is quite a nice DLC for people who stopped playing the game, as they'll return for the fun chaos and perhaps rediscover the beauty of the normal game
Personally, I'm looking quite forward to it since a lot of people having been begging me to mod them in for the Half-Life 2 mod, and now there's gonna be a perfect opportunity for that

There are tons of other ways to do that without going far beyond what the game is about. Zombies to me in a game like this is just a cheap shot.

I...am puzzled. I mean, just because a prison happened to be the place in a season of 'The Walking Dead', do zombies now qualify as inmates? What next? Callcenter DLC? Cthulu DLC? Iä! Iä! Prison fatha'gn? Or both at once: Call of Cthulu-DLC??

Yeah, Halloween setting is nice but seriously? I scratched my head a bit when prison went eco-friendly as this isn't a topic I would connext to prisons. I applauded the decision to flesh out gangs in the last DLC but..zombies? How does that fit the game theme? I thought it was about designing and running a prison while making money. What benefits do zombies bring to the game???

Anyone with a kind of serious answer?

so

all I can tell you, or, anyone, is my experience. It is as follows:

I bought Prison Architect (PA) after seeing someone else play it. forget who. many years ago.

followed PA development a bit with its old crew.

stopped playing for a while

picked it up again a few months later

stopped again a bit later

heard it was bought by paradox.

heard a lot of people were unhappy with the DLCs. don't remember who or where, but, saw it on reddit, twitter, or maybe even here as well. All I know for sure is I put "people don't like paradox's PA DLCs" into my memory.

a year goes by. (literally) [I last played in march of 2021]

I see a little thingy on steam. You know where it shows you news about games you play. I see PA and zombies. I honestly think it's a joke and am curious.

I am likely not the person they were aiming for with this DLC, but from my perspective as an inactive player, it kinda looks like "the game just keeps getting worse and worse"

People are talking about bugs I've never heard of (cause I've not played in so long) and complaining about this DLC.

I know there's lots more going on, but I never get to see that.

all I saw was the DLC. no previous PA DLC caught my attention. I've had no strong desire to play PA in ages. I don't pay attention to it. Thus it seems like "all the news is bad news"

In summary

What we have here may just be a communication issue.

This DLC isn't bad. This DLC isn't good. Heck, this DLC isn't out yet. The only thing that's clear to me is that this DLC did not meet the expectations of the community for a new DLC. The messaging did not meet the expectations of the community for bugfixes. The timing may have also felt random (it certainly did to me!)

The good news is that Stellaris went through this problem a year or so ago, and finally was able to get ahead of most of the big issues, and most Stellaris things I read are 'good news' full of happy people with happy comments.

I can't tell you how they did it. Only that I've seen it done.

Something can be bad beforehand. And idea can be scrapped simply by uttering it.

my understanding of development cycles is that this DLC is effectively finished by now. Don't get me wrong, I'm not keen on zombies. I'm a ninja guy. That's not a joke, I have a lot of friends who are keen on zombies and zombie games. I do not share that enthusiasm. however; I keep in mind that I like the idea of Crusader Kings' "sunset invasion", while others find that equally immersion breaking as this DLC may be. Rather, my point is that I suspect those who don't want the DLC (and if I may make a guess, I'd guess this DLC won't sell well) will actually quite like the bug fixes. Instead my post was more "Teddy thinks they should have lead the messaging with the bugfixes, not the DLC"

Well yes, but you must agree that even ninjas in PA would be weird. There is a place and a time for zombies. In my opinion PA is not the place.
