What is the definition of "Sin" in "Empire of Sin"?

I suppose it'd be lawbreaking. As your empire is built on illegal activity.

What is the definition of "Sin" in "Empire of Sin"?

Interesting question. I think it was more of a catchy title than anything else. However, diving deeper into the meaning, it probably has more to do with murder, racketeering, and general profiting off of illegal activity.

That makes sense.

"Empire of Sin" is bit more pithy than

"Empire of Illegal Activity"

;)

Going to Wikipedia (of course :) )

More catchy than (as the Wikipedia article describes):

"Empire of immoral, selfish, shameful, harmful, or alienating actions, thoughts, or words"

"Empire of transgressions against divine law"

When looked at in such concrete (literal) terms, the thesis of the game takes on a different light.

It is in keeping with the moral tone of the time: prohibition had its roots in religious themes regarding the "sins" that "demon" alcohol could cause to happen. It was in part a backlash against the enormous social changes and upheaval caused by the First World War and in the years that followed.

Organised crime in this period and setting was dominated by Irish and Italian immigrants or descendants whose communities had strong beliefs in the Catholic Church. Hence the religious descriptor.

In my opinion. I have no idea. Makes sense to me.

At the time period of the game, drinking alcohol was very much a Sin. And you're very much running an illicit (and immoral) organization that deals in that.

Then there is all that "killing other people" that is part of the business, but since the game is based in the USA, I'm not sure how harsh a Sin that would be...

Then there is all that "killing other people"

That would be against, "Thou shalt not kill"

Taking things in-game that aren't "yours" would check the boxes for "Thou shalt not steal" and "thou shalt not covet"

Then there are the in-game brothels, "Thou shalt not commit adultery"

I suppose the game celebrates a few more sins, too.

That's from a religion standpoint, this tends to differ a lot depending on what faith you practice.

Common ground would be the law of the country this takes place. Prohibition times in America, I'd equate it to those standards.

It sounds like one definition of sin, if I understand correctly, is the act of breaking a country's law.

Did I get that right?
"Empire of Breaking U.S. Laws" -- not as catchy. ;) (credit to Eber for highlighting the importance of having a catchy title)

The idea of breaking laws as sin is somewhat similar -- but different -- to that wikipedia article's secular take on sin:

immoral, selfish, shameful, harmful, or alienating actions, thoughts, or words
As previously cited:

Well, my thought is 7 deadly sin:

  • Lust: Prostitution
  • Gluttony: Factory your own moonshine
  • Greed: So obvious right! that the whole meaning of became a big boss - Rich and fame
  • Sloth: if in real life I said DRUG but I not sure in-game (the hotel maybe ?)
  • Wrath: Gang fight ha ha ha
  • Envy: diplomacy between gang boss - betray
  • Pride: Show another who the toughest dog in the neighbor.:cool::cool::D
