EU4 - Development Diary - 31st March 2016

dev diary.jpg

Hello and welcome back. Mare Nostrum will be upon us very soon so I will take this last dev diary before release to show some extras and the 15 new achievements which will be part of the 1.16 patch. With Wiz safely banished to the furthest reaches of space to make friends with Blorg, I am free to ensure there are no more Eastern Roman Empire related Achievements.

The 15 new achievements, which some clever cookies may have seen before are:
  • Mare Nostrum: Restore the Roman Empire and own the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea coast lines.

  • Kuban Cigars: As Kuba, own or have a subject own Havana and be the world’s leading producer of Tobacco.

  • Kushite Restoration: As a Nubian culture nation, own the entire Egyptian region as core provinces.

  • The Fezzan Corridors: As Fezzan, control at least 90% of the trade power in Tunis, Katsina, Safi and Timbuktu.

  • Victorian Three: As Basoga, Buganda or Karagwe, reach administrative, diplomatic and military technology level 32.

  • The Animal Kingdom: As Manipur, unite the Bengal region and convert it to Animism.

  • Golden Horn: As a Somali nation, fully own the Horn of Africa region and have a monthly gold income of at least 50 ducats.

  • Kinslayer: As Tver, Yaroslavl, Ryazan or Odoyev, eliminate all other Rurikovich nations without changing your ruling dynasty.

  • Choson One: As Korea, own or have a subject own all Shinto, Confucian and Buddhist provinces in the world.

  • Sailor Mon: As Pegu, have at least 100,000 sailors.
  • The White Company: Hire your army out to both sides in a war and fight in a battle against your former employer.

  • Networking: Have 100 point spy networks in 3 rival nations.

  • Time Bandit: Successfully steal a map from another nation.

  • With a little help..: As Ragusa, lead a Trade League of at least 5 nations and guarantee the Ottomans’ independence

  • Just Resting In My Account: Corrupt the officials in a rival country

Going hand-in-hand with one of these achievements, we have added one of the longest requested formable nations: The Roman Empire. It is no easy task to perform, requiring Christianity or Paganism and ownership of the regions of Italy, France, Iberia, Balkans, Anatolia, Mashriq as well as certain key provinces, but doing so will allow you to recreate the thousand year empire and grant you the new unique culture of Roman.

Forming Rome is a free feature, available as part of the 1.16 patch.

Next up is Timeline, a new Mare Nostrum feature

timeline1.jpg

At any point through your campaign you can hit the new timeline button next to the date and observe how the world has evolved throughout the years. Watch as empires rise and fall and re-live how your own nation rose to its great heights (hopefully)

timeline2.jpg

Opening Timeline will bring the map back to how it was at the start of your campaign and then you can choose at what speed to run through the world's history. You can pan all over the map during this timeline, so while the Big Blue Blob takes over Europe you can admire infighting new world natives or see which of the Daimyo's made Japan theirs.

Finally, some ideas, starting with the aforementioned Roman Empire

Now all we need is dynamic province names for the Roman culture!

Much like the HRE-tag and Arabia if they are ever formed they're formed by player thus making them nothing more than player-only tags, such tag adds nothing to the game.
While the current version makes it impractically hard for the AI to pass Renovatio, it has happened in past versions.

And I though Conclave would be the worst pile of bovine excrement Paradox would produce this year.

The Roman Empire in the early modern age? In a time were >>NATIONALISM<< became more and more the driving force of European politics? That only further promotes mindless blobbing?

I mean, I can understand that Paradox put all the competent Devs on the HoI4 and Stellaris teams during the high-intensity months before launch, but good lord then stop patching EU4 to death.

Christian huh?....do Copts count? Could I reform Rome as Ethiopia?....or post Krishitan Japan?

Would be cool if I could, but I think being in Europe should be another requirement. It would be ridiculous for a non-European power claiming the glory of Rome just because some ambitious player as the Ming decided to Christian up, conquer Europe, and make the Sino-Roman superpower.

No reason it shouldn't count. And you just inspired me to try an Ethiopian Rome run. Should be fun.

Lets see...
- Dominate Aden trade,
- Rush Mamelukes
- Keep pushing against N. africans, maintain max relations with Christian powers in order to hold off Ottomans until you can on your own.
- Convert to Catholicism (gameplay and roleplay, it makes the most sense, your empire will be European in character soln enough) and aim for a union with at least one major power.
- At this point, you really should be powerful enough to do what you want.

Oh, and keep the Solomonids in power the whole time. I don't think you can really imagine a more legitimate Empire for Christiana than a Roman Empire with a dynasty traced back to Solomon.

I like the ideas for Rome and for the Irish. I think my first playthrough will now be an Irish minor rather than Scotland!

It would be nice if the timeline feature would get the option to skip to a specific date post release.
So you don't have to go through 200 years or more if you just want to check out what happened during the last 20.

Is adopting Roman culture mandatory? Personally, I find it quite reasonable that any empire that large would claim 'hey, we're Rome,' (the plausibility of getting that large in the first place, of course, is low, but thats up to the player) but I don't find it reasonable that said empire would then turn around and say 'oh, by the way, we're all going back to speaking Latin, wearing togas, and attending gladiator games.'

Whats 'free = yes' mean?

This was rather underwhelming. More "blob as X nation" achievements and perhaps the most anachronistic formation decision of any Paradox title barring V2's Babylon (and that was a joke...).

Any other formables/changes to formables?

Are there any other requirments for forming Rome, besides having the right provinces? The tooltip for the decision suspiciously sounds as if the HRE and ERE are locked out of this decision, though I doubt that this will be the case. And what about the Papal State? Can the pope declare himself to be the new Caesar? That would be amazing, especially with the boni the Papal State can already get through events/decisions. Would make an interesting achievement too. "Reddite meum quam meum" (if my Latin isn't borked... again)

I wish we were given Latin Empire to restore too :(
"Latin Empire" is a name modern historians give to the catholic Roman Empire established in the 4rth crusade after the catholics conquered Constantinople (aka 2nd Rome). It wouldn't make much sense to add a tag if we already have the Roman Empire.
