EU4 - Development Diary - 20th of December 2016

Greetings all EU4 players!

The EU4 team is currently wrapping up the year by fixing some bugs on a few new great features that are yet to come. Everyone on the team is very excited for the upcoming expansion and we can’t wait to announce it. Two people have already started their Christmas vacations, whereas the most of us will leave on Thursday / Friday this week.

2016 has contained a lot of changes to the team and we’ll still keep experimenting, learning new things and find new ways to work. One of our legendary AI-programmers has unfortunately left the team to try his own wings - but we’ve also got two new additions to the team who have already proved themselves highly worthy. During the development of Rights of Man we also had the opportunity to get some help with creating events from two content designers in the CK2 team. More than ever before we’ve had structured feedback sessions (retrospections) regularly as well as new exercises in estimations every now and then. But even though lots of changes happen all the time we fortunately still have Johan as a cornerstone who has worked with EU4 longer than any of the rest of us and knows in which direction we’re going with the future expansions.

This year we’re also taking pride in having released Rights of Man, which received a Steam review of 86% - sharing second place in terms of EU4 Steam Review on par with El Dorado and 2% below Art of War. This is a great result and we aim even higher for the next expansion.

Additionally we’ve managed to get two (!) of our dedicated fans to become translators for us in French and German respectively - which is just in line with our vision of being close to our fans. Our quality of translations increases with passion and skills. Maybe sometime in the future we will get all our texts translated by fans.

By the way, it was great talking with some of you at the Fangathering at our office some time ago - hope that some of you will join PDX Con next year!

Last but not least I hope you have enjoyed our competitive Multiplayer-sessions as much as we have, the plans and strategies behind the sessions have not been limited to what’s seen on camera but there is continuous talk in the team on how to form alliances even when the camera is turned off. Congrats to Wiz who won!

Thank you for all the feedback you’ve given to us this year, it’s very useful to us and we have people in the team reading your posts every day. Keep talking with us and we’ll keep listening to you.

Merry Christmas/Whatever you celebrate Paradox, and a Happy New Year! Really excited to see what's coming for the next update/DLC (maybe a reworked China dynasty system :3) - anyways, see you guys in 2017 <3

While having competition would probably hurt my chances, in the name of good sportsmanship, just contact them, they said many other people have already volunteered.
 
HoI4 has the EU4 languages plus Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Russian. In my view it would be very much beneficial for Paradox to include more languages in EU4, and I know a lot of community members would happily create these translations and for free.

Do you guys need an Esperanto translator? I might be of some assistance.

Providing Esperanto text properly in EU4 is a pain, because Zamenhof used the breve to mark consonantal u (vs. vocalic u) and the circumflex to mark the "extra" consonants (ĉĝĥĵŝ), which means you have to use a custom font and non-standard text encoding due to the limitations of EU4's font renderer.

HoI4 and Stellaris don't have that font rendering limitation, which is why they can support Polish and Russian conveniently.
 
I used to do that, but there are too many too keep up with. When I get a good moment I might spend an hour or two compiling all the ones I've found.
Could I ask you to tag me as well? I'd be interested in doing some proof-reading too, but don't want to duplicate work you've already done.
 
I still get dissapointed that this "ages" and "ship improvements" are what actually most of community has been waiting for so long. That was stated in the previous development diary. I was hoping for more micro-management concerning to either population, development or buildings. I guess, this DLC is going to be the first I won't run to buy the moment it will be released. :/

If you tell me how, I would translate the game to Hungarian with pleasure. :)
Sadly, adding Hungarian to the game would require engine changes.

A mod that discarded support for French, German, and Spanish could (possibly) do the job by using CP1250 (Central and Eastern European Languages) instead of CP1252 (Western European Languages) as the text encoding and replacing all the pre-rendered fonts accordingly.

Why is it so important to be the only Irishman from a certain geographical area? Is it some typical Irish thing?
You're not misremembering, Lynchy is just being his usual cheeky self. ;)
Well as far as I am aware he is either me or a Croatian, depending on who you believe.


Oh and we are just pretty local people. We like our own lads. The way this boy spells Connacht thought makes me think he isn't Irish.

I really hope so. The difference in British English and American English is so vast that I have issues reading the text at times :p

American English can be hilarious in some weird ways, for example they "drive on parkways" and "park on driveways" .
I am sure some American reader can come up with similarly weird phrases in British English though :)

If it doesn't have silliness like this it isn't a proper language, you can find examples in all of the ones lots of people use.
