7 days and no update? is something wrong?

Well, yes! I have a life, and its the first weeks of summer here, so please peeps, forgive me for wanting to get out of my reinforced Moscow bunker :)

On the bright side, the forecast here for next week is not so good, so with a little luck I can make my excuses to the politbureau and start playing again.

Fantastic AAR, you've motivated me to buy Hearts of Iron 3 :D

Are you using any mods at all?

WARNING: Don't install 'For the Motherland' until it gets patched a bit more.

First off - sorry for the extremely long break. Ive plenty of excuses - ill health, family commitments, being on holiday - and im sure they wont suffice.

Secondly - pending a act of god, this AAR is back up and running!

"The Wife"

Haha, I wish (or dont rather)!

No mods at all, just patched HoI 3.

Its honestly the best buy you can make. My investment has earned me around 450 hours of enjoyment!

Im giving FtM a miss, for the moment. Doesnt seem like enough to merit it at present.

Operation Red Island

With the American deployments in the Central Pacific on the back foot following the loss of Austrailia, many were expecting the decisive battle to appear within the last few months of 1953.

Such a battle, would naturaly, be a carrier engagement to prevent, or support a naval invasion. Though the Americans had numerical superiority in carriers themselves, the Soviet Pacific Fleet had the technological advantage, and had the advantage of new design features, unlike the older American carriers, which had seen service against Japan and Germany.

The overall situation in the Pacific had forced the Americans to give up many island bases as useless, for the Soviet drive into Austrailia had left the shipping lanes in the Dutch East Indies free of American raids. Furthermore, Formosa was employed as a base to spoil any American aircraft attempting to strike from the Phillipines, which, along with many other American bases, were being left to rot on the vine.

The Soviet Navy would have the choice of its battlefield, but there was a common reasoning on both sides that Pearl Harbour would be the do-or-die battle of American ambition in the Pacific, and both sides were preparing accordinaly.

The Naval Landing Corps, fresh from its capture of Johnson Island, was preparing to overcome the last American fortress in the Pacific, while the carrier pilots of the Carrier task forces engaged in mock attacks and combat, and the commanders of the Soviet bomber formations poured over recon photographs from thier targets.

The plan was simple. The Naval Landing Corps would attack the Hawaiian Islands, supported by the Soviet Carriers, while any possible American intervention was halted by land based bombers pounding the Americans.

The gamble for the Soviet Union was large. A defeat, and the Americans could have at least a year to build up and mount a counter-attack. A victory, and the American West Coast would be in range of the Soviet Air Fleet's...

good to see this back and running. Think you've got the right objective, grab that and you can then invade the US West Coast, but its a real gamble if they manage to inflict a heavy defeat on you

.... & as a reminder you still are the weekly showcase AAR from June ... think its time to give it away?

Can I employ you as my personal reminder? How do you manage to keep all those AAR's on the go? Thanks for the reminder, sorted that!

What countries in the American continent are Allies? (Just an assessment of how many enemies you will have there).

Well, they arent with us, so therefore they are against us!

Not a single American on the communist side at present. Some neutrals, but most are firmly in the allied encampment. That, however, can change...

This aar is relevant to my interests. Consider me subscribed.

It's a shame I just discovered it, but keep up the good work!

May I enquire as to what interests they are? The Pacific ToW, or the Soviet war machine itself?

You may.

My interests are amongst others and in now particular order.

The soviet War machine, the Pacific ToW and the Naval and air battles they bring, since not a lot of AARs follow or focus on those.

It's a cold war gone hot, I can't get enough of those stories.

And of course the looming threat of total nuclear war. It's a MAD world after all.

That said, your writing style and general layout of the AAR makes it easy to read and keeps me focused, wich keeps me bound to this Aar till the end.

In all fairness, this game does quite a average job of representing the Pacific ToW. Most islands are clumped into groups, and the AI doesnt bother to defend most of them for whatever reason, let alone deploy ships or aircraft to make use of them.

But then again, I have been shown the light in the form of War in the Pacific, so perhaps its for the best!

Great AAR MajorMayhem, it's nice to see one of the minority that are written as strategic reports rather than walls of text from aspiring novelists. It is an AFTER-ACTION-REPORT after all :D

Great idea for an AAR, I really loved your writing on the invasion of Ireland as well.

Could we have some updates on disposition of forces on other fronts and the economic and diplomatic situation to make it even better? :)

Just came across this AAR and have to say it's a pity I didn't found it earlier! Finished reading it in one go. Great stuff!!

Keep up the good work, and best of luck on your invasion of the Hawaiian Islands.

Sure, though my unit deployments will take some time, seeing as I have a ton of units. Diplomacy is simple - Europe, Asia and Northern Africa is Communist. Everyone else is the enemy.

I think I shall need it...

Update on the way...

Operation Red Island - Active

Operation Red Island swung into action in late September, with the Russian carrier force sailing north to support a landing to occupy undefended Eniwetok as part of the plan to reduce American air power.

What resulted was a breif carrier clash between the two superpowers remaining in the world. The two Russian fleet carriers were pitted against the light carrier Iwo Jima.

1.jpg

The result was inconclusive. The American fleet escaped, having traded three heavy cruisers and a destroyer group for a Russian cruiser. The American carrier escaped eastwards, leaving Eniwetok to the Russian troops.

2results.jpg

A month later, the Russian fleet steamed from Truk, headed for Pearl Harbour. The entire might of the Soviet Pacific Fleet that could be brought to bear was heading for the home of the American Pacific Fleet, and the ensuing clash it would bring.

Soviet Fleet sailing to Pearl Harbour from Truk.

The Soviet scout aircraft delivered the Soviet Admiral, Vladimir Tributs, disturbing news. Pearl Harbour, bar some aircraft, was totaly undefended. Nevertheless, the invasion went ahead. Soviet marines landed on Oahu, finding the harbour empty, streets deserted, and the airfeild now empty.

3attack.jpg

It took the Soviet Fleet some time to find the cause of these strange events. A little after midnight on the 24th of November, Admiral Tributs broke radio silence to make a general broadcast - "Its a trap! All ships execute order 37!"

The American fleet burst out of the eastern darkness, a mix of battleships, crusiers and destroyers, and engaged the Russian ships disorging onto Oahu. At the forefront was Admiral Halsey, famed American admiral. The Soviet's were quick to respond - aircraft quickly took to the skies, and the Battle of Pearl Harbour began.

4carriercrash.jpg

The Americans paid the price for sending surface ships unescorted by carriers, but the first attack achived its goal. The Soviet landings were disrupted, and the loss of a transport group would damage Soviet capacity for some time, even if the losses were uneven.

5losses.jpg

The Soviets retained the waters around Oahu, but the battle was far from over. Scarely had two hours past, when the American carriers appeared out of the morning darkness. Three light carriers, and their escorts. Again, the Russian pilots took off again.

5reinforcements.jpg

The battle raged for a full day, when in the middle of the night, with ships of both sides lighten up the black night, Halsey appeared again - this time leading the full force of American carrier might. At least seven fleet carriers are ranged against the two Russian carriers.

6hallseystrikesback.jpg

At such might, the Soviets had little choice but to flee from such overwhelming force. With land based aircraft being flown in to Pearl Harbour, the Soviet Air Force, as well as carrier aircraft forced the Americans away from the Russian fleet and allowed them to hide in Pearl Harbour, avoiding further losses.

7losses.jpg

With Soviet ships at harbour, the Soviet Air Force could stike back. With the captured American airfeild at Pearl Harbour, Russian planes took of again and again to attack the American fleet, which was fluttering like a moth at a candleflame.

8airbattle.jpg

By the night of the 25th, the American fleet had fled. Losses on both sides were still being counted.

I cannot wait to see you invade the mainland! Just as a question, why are you wasting so much IC? Surely there's something you can find to build?

It's a trap!

Would be great if it was really a trap rather than the mysterious "logic" of the AI.

But seriously I can't believe they couldn't totally decimate your fleet with seven fleet carriers???

Yes, I could. Every so often I add something to the que, like "Oh, some cruisers for the Atlantic", but then I see there are American ships in the DEI, so they get rerouted. Add to that the mircomangement hell of multi-contiental warfare, and hey presto, wasted IC :)

I was worried (for the sake of the AAR!) that America wouldnt make a fight of it, and so dispel the tension in a very unattractive and anti-climatical way.

Many things came into play. Wacky tech levels (destroyers travel at 42 knots!!!), huge ship numbers (around forty!) and my land based aircraft attacking the American CAG's. Still, I have about three undamaged ships at present, so it wasnt all one way...
