This Update’s Observation:

I could never understand why men in their 20s or 30s married. Because years later you’re going to wake up and wonder who is that old woman lying next to you. You’ll come to this realization at the most inopportune time: When you’re driving by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts and the only thing that crosses your mind is… Damn.

***

So it was late in July when I declared war on the Ottoman Empire, deciding to give Thessalia to Greece because I’m such a selfish bastard… at least that’s what Girl #4 said the last time I saw her. France didn’t honor their alliance with the Ottomans which meant Russia and friends lunged into Ottoman territories.

About a week into the war the Ottomans mobilized which brought up a total of 25 regiments for their use. We can easily see this war was not going to go well for the Empire so we can probably skip over the bulk of it.

Two victories and a minor loss by mid September and I was able to bring Mexico into my Sphere of Influence. I was hesitant to do this in the first place because Mexico had been coming close to the #8 GP spot now and again but I really wanted to come through for them if they had another war with the US. It’s the only way I can free Manhattan in the future if I’m so able to.

vpyyo5.jpg

The Ottomans were routinely destroyed throughout the rest of the year, that minor victory in September - where they would kill 2700 of my men - being their only victory throughout the war. By the start of the year I had reduced my national stockpile to 25%, lowered rich taxes to 15% and added the war goal to free Bosnia.

By this point the Ottomans were down to one regiment which was destroyed seventeen days later by the Egyptians. National Stockpile was reduced to 15% to save on costs.

Late February I took down Instanbul and Gwalior decided to insult a GP… luckily for them I have no interest.

And have I mentioned how I love seeing Siam in Iraq?

By May I had occupied all of OE’s Greece followed by the occupation of Albania 19 June. Ten days later the Ottomans agreed to peace. Middle and Poor taxes were reduced to 32%, Rich to 0%, National Stockpile to 2% and Military Spending to 90%, the highest rate the Geneva Convention will allow.

1 May 1872 I managed to finally repay my debt. It seems to be a constant theme at the start of these updates. At the same time I decreased the US in Egypt and banned the UK in China. My relations with those countries are beginning to go down the drain.

6 September the Netherlands lost their Great Power slot to newly civilized and newly crowned Great Power, Japan. I hadn’t realized they civilized. I guess I don’t have the popup for that one. But hey, its cool. And a day later I signed an alliance with them. We should be friends.

xdf1v6.jpg

2i7bzhu.jpg

And a little more than a month later France declared war on Spain which wouldn’t become interesting to me until a little later.

Around the start of 1873 I began decreasing relations with Spain which was, in January, at +130.

In February the UK broke their alliance with France only to aid Spain in their war against France on 4 March. Ten days later both the UK and France mobilized. Immediately I began preparing for war against Spain since the Philippines aren’t going to free themselves.

All taxes went to 90%, Military Spending 0% and National Stockpile 100%. I was losing around 1300 a day.

23 March… Austria declared war on France. Then I began thinking… I might go to war against Austria. They’re certainly going to be tougher than Spain but Austria has that never ending alliance with the UK. Austria, Sweden, Netherlands, Bavaria, Wuttenburg and Krakow v. France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Ottoman Empire and Brazil.

xomdeg.jpg

Before declaring war on Spain in July, I gave MA to the OE.

We’re going to free Luzon (the Philippines) from Spain.

Regiments:
Russia: 152
Spain: 22

Ships:
Russia: 123
Spain:3

Its gonna be a nail biter.

hx88bt.jpg

By the beginning of July Russian troops were already landing in Spanish Morocco. Casablanca, Safi and Sawira. While my awesome allies from Egypt actually landed in Spain. Sweet!

r9lbiq.jpg

2111f6u.jpg

14 September I added to free another Filipino province to my war goals however BB dictated that I wouldn’t be able to free the third and final province in this war. It was fifteen days later that I’d discover 30,000 Spaniards sitting in the Philippines. Its like they were expecting war or something.

2djqex1.jpg

I’d eventually try to land in the mountains but my 20,000 troops, even with the terrain, wouldn’t be enough to battle their 30,000 plus a fantastic general which gave them a +4 to the battle. I had to retreat in December. At least I have control of the seas and can land wherever I like.

Late December I made my first landings in southern Spain: Granada and Almeria.

Spain had been knocked down to 13 regiments but managed to raise their ship count somehow up to 7.

Their African possessions, beginning with Marrakesh and Casablanca began to fall within the month while Palawan and Sulu on the other side of the world came under Russian control. By 27 February I was confident enough in my troops and ships to lower National Stockpile to 50%.

Then some Russian stuff came up.

2f0bz1k.jpg

Occupations continued relatively smoothly through the rest of the first half of the year. And the French and Austrian war came to an end in early July with a white peace.

12 July that 30,000 Spanish presence in the Philippines chased down my 25,000 strong army. More regiments were on the way but more importantly, the Spanish wouldn’t be able to retreat once I’d settle into my blockade.

9bk8lj.jpg

In the same month France took down Madrid.

I initially lost that battle against Spain because my reinforcements were a few days late, but my reinforcements were able to capitalize on depleted moral and numerical superiority to eliminate the Spanish army in Asia.

After the above battle Spain was left with 2 regiments which were both in Cuba… next to Japanese forces. Makes perfect sense. And I lowered my National Stockpile to 20%.

34sjgk2.jpg

Peace came in mid December without another battle on my end. Spain agreed to release both provinces and the Philippines became a Russian puppet.

Just posting to show I still love ya. Nice to see an independent Philippines, hopefully a glorious free New York shall soon follow?

hoi2geek: Just so we’re clear a ‘Hurrah’ is a type of alcoholic drink, right? Though I am a little disappointed I couldn’t free the last province. Maybe in the future.

Omen: Hush you! :p

zagorth: Then why don’t you call anymore? And well, Mexico is in my sphere now. I’m thinking I might start shipping some units over into Mexico’s territory in the next 10 - 20 years.

aldriq: Their alliance actually broke again, I believe somewhere near the start of this update - or the last one... I can't really remember now. I could’ve used a few more of these in my Spanish AAR. But we learned something about gift horses in that thread…

9 March the French and British came to a peace with France taking Catalonia from Spain. And six days later Afghanistan left my sphere due to some revolution. Both Khiva and Bukkhara declared war on the new revolutionaries, both wanting the same province.

1zvfrrc.jpg

5 May I repaid my debt, a few paragraphs later than normal but what can one expect? And upon loading the game in July both Hedjaz and Egypt declared war on Nedj. They also wanted the same province: Kaf. They know value when they see it but I wasn’t about to help out the Egyptians; I only love them for one thing. Suez. I just keep forgetting to research the right techs so I can build the thing.

1 August I declared war on the Ottomans for Rumelia using my CB: Russia & friends v. Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans mobilized immediately totaling a number of 27 regiments of which only 1 was regular. Unrelated, 10 days later Persia entered the Japanese SOI.

The first battle occurred in their capital which was a great sign for them. And I slaughtered their fleet, sinking 22 of their 24 ships without losing a single one. Wooden ships all the way!

2h55fgo.jpg

I should really start thinking about researching and replacing those things before I find myself in real trouble against a real power. Oh well, Russia’s big for a reason.

Anyway, because of this nicely timed victory, I had surrounded their troops in Instanbul while trapping another one of their larger regiments on the western side. They’re much easier to destroy when not entrenched in the mountains.

2qweg6s.jpg

I initially lost that battle but the following month their element was destroyed in Gallipoli. Nine thousand more Turkish militias were destroyed in the month of October alone in both Shumen and Varna.

4 November I wrote something that looks like ‘war pies’ but I probably meant ‘war pics.’

4 November 1876

2efs01h.jpg

10ddukx.jpg

Another battle didn’t hit me until 10 January where I lost 12,000 men. Obviously I’m not to blame. I’m the Tsar. I’ll just blame it on the General, force him to retire to some random outpost and replace him with someone else from St. Petersburg. It’s the only logical solution.

Seven days after that I mobilized to hurry the war and I believe it was around this time and some of the years later that I was playing ‘with’ the influence.

26 January I had occupied the Ottoman capital and went to the peace screen. How awesome is it that Mexico wants Albania? At the time I hadn’t made up my mind if I wanted to give it to them or not.

148pzdt.jpg

I managed to lose again in the east at Trebizon. I just can’t seem to win over there. The Ottomans suffered a minor 2822 casualties while I caught 7887 losses. These kinds of losses are meant for the militia.

20 April… Egypt took Nejd’s Kaf region. Yeah, don’t go after the OE or anything.

6puq9x.jpg

A few days later Italy declared war on Hedjaz. That’s what they get for not destroying Nejd.

1 July 1877

2lk7m7t.jpg

2nrq1af.jpg

Before the month let out the entirety of Ottoman Europe had been occupied. Action in the east began to improve as I made advances in a few provinces and victories, even if casualties were at times nearly equal.

Then those bastard Austrians decided to declare war for Ostpressen.

znoie0.jpg

Austrian War 20 September 1877

2e5kydv.jpg

11l0oro.jpg

I had 346 regiments, most of which I ignored because I didn’t think the war was going to last long. So this would mean much transcontinental travel for these units. If I were lucky I’d see them in about 8 - 10 months. While after Austrian mobilization, they numbered 155 regiments. They also brought along their allies Bavaria - the traitors - Krakow and Wuttenburg.

While trying to blockade the Austrians in their little hole, I lost 15 ships. That navy seriously needs to be modernized. By 29 September, many of my battles along the north going badly, the troops I still had in the east and Far East not to mention the additional cash losses I’d accumulate, I decided to give the Austrians what they wanted for now. Its still early and I’d be able to retake what I needed at a later date.

349audj.jpg

Plus it’s a great location for future militia units to sit and siege though it isn’t going to do much to help my industrial score. I was also tired and wanted to end the war so I could go to bed… I hate leaving wars unfinished. Maybe that’s why I never fell hard for HOI.

21 October I was able to make peace with the Ottoman Empire. Initially I had thought about keeping Mexico from getting Albania but after losing my Ost province, I decided to stick it to the Ottomans and let the Mexicans have Albania.

2lnbo02.jpg

ak8jv4.jpg

I decided after this war to leave the Ottomans mostly alone from now on. Exceptions may come along like if Greece wants their last province back or something of the kind but for the most part, plans are to leave the Ottomans go... unless boredom finds me again.

Juan_de_Marco: I know, its really starting to grow on me. I was hesitant to give it to them since they are #9 overall but I had to take my vengeance out on someone.

Daffius: I agree on Austria. It was an unfortunate war however, ending relatively quickly since most of my troops were out of position and the Balkans would’ve easily been steamrolled while my attentions remained focused on the Ottomans.

aldriq: Better than Chris Isaak, how about Mariachi bands singing Albanian tunes? I would totally pay Albanian pesos to see that.

1878 was a quiet year with nothing of note except a Jacobin rebellion which erupted halfway through January. It was put down by mid April at the cost of nearly 2000 Russian soldiers and 40,000 rebels.

17 February 1879 I first noticed a nice Africa being developed. This ought to make things interesting for Prussia and France later on.

30sulg5.jpg

Not long after that I decided to move out of Armenia.

9sxhr4.jpg

And the United States annexed Hawaii. A month later I’d discover Early Railroad and began work on Iron Steamers.

30 October Italy annexed Hedjaz but the real interesting stuff happened in the final month. First, 39,000 Danzig rebels rose but even better, Italy declared war on Austria for Lombardia. Italy, Prussia and Sweden v. Austria, Krakow, Wuttenburg, and Bavaria.

29zbkar.jpg

At the start of the new year I raised all taxes to 49% and eventually put down the Danzig rebellion on 14 January. Russian soldier cost: 5000 exactly. Rebel cost: 39,000

Later in the month I gave MA to Sweden and declined to attend the Congo Conference since it would’ve raised BB by two points. Since I’m preparing for war with Austria, now that they’re at war with Italy, I don’t want to stay above the BB limit any longer than I have to.

m8d99j.jpg

Later in March Armenian nationalists rose but they’d all be put down by early May. Russian soldier cost: 515 Armenian rebels: 9,000

On the same day the Armenian revolution ended I also began construction on my first guard units. Military Access was granted to Prussia a few months later.

1881 the Socialist Revolutionary Party formed while I acquired MA through Bosnia and Wallachia. I was in the beginning stages of placing troops, encircling Austria. Even more fun, later in the month I acquired MA through Italy with a “Maybe.” Guess Who’s vacationing in Italy? Nope, not Spencer Tracy…

24biy51.jpg

A week later Austria and Prussia signed a white peace which prompted me to begin sending subsidies to Italy. One week after that, 10 May, France declared war on Spain. Spain had 3 regiments…

Three days later Italy acquired Lombardia which was surprising to me. But anything to knock Austria down.

I had seriously considered declaring war on Austria at this point however it was still within the cease fire range and I dare not do anything that might jeopardize my Great Power slot. Sure, I’m still 200 points above Mexico but I also have to think in the long run too.

nyznlk.jpg

Early April I placed National Stockpile at 10%. And a month later LVL 2 Railroads began propping up all around the country. Come July, due to the battling I was doing in China and Mexico, Egypt fell out of my SOI. And after all I did for the Italians. I just couldn’t compete with their new land connection in Hedjaz.

No pic thanks to tinypic

I soon decided to give up on the Egyptians and concentrate on China and Mexico, to burn away the other’s influence before I lost one or the other. This was made more difficult now that Japan, along with the UK and US, were also playing the ‘I Want China’ game.

15 July 1882 Italy intervened on Spain’s behalf. This meant Italy was against France and their meager alliance essentially alone. Good.

Toward the end of the year Egypt entered the Italian sphere and France allied with Saxony.

1 March I began seriously prepping for war and reduced Military Spending to 0%, National Stockpile to 100% and all taxes to 90%. On average I was losing between 600 - 700 per day but I was just up over 1 million rubles. ;)

24 April I began researching Military Logistics and on 1 October I decided to take my pics of my forces just before declaring war on Austria why? Because they had a lot of factories there and because I got cat class and I got cat styyyle. Austrian West Galacia was the province… the warriors were: Russia and all allies v. Austria, Bavaria, Krakow and Wuttemburg.

Note that many of these troops are set up so I can take down any mobilized Austrian militias that pop up.

I also plan on shipping a number of far off militia to Italy, with the exception of those units which pop up in Siberia.

For those who are interested into what goes into my AARs… I’m currently up to 496 pics and on page 54 in my notes.

That's a lot of pages.

The build up to the battle with Austria is quite exciting. Now to see you crush them!

Will you free Hungary, gain land for your allies/puppets? Or just take it all yourself?

Omen: For now my BB says I can only ask for the one province. In future wars, after I return Ost to my control, then I’ll think about dismantling Austria.

aldriq: Not this time. They never cored and it’d be too much BB to risk… there are still powerful players just sitting around.

To all: Well, it seems tinypic is starting to screw with some of the pics I have up. One they’ve taken down for one reason or another and another they exchanged it with an animated gif of snow. So if you run into something like those, they’re not intentional.

By 3 October everyone had mobilized:
Regiments:
Russia 354
Austria 157

Ships:
Russia: 108
Austria: 184

My opening moves worked out well enough. By the end of October I had won 7 altercations. Casualties were almost the same but Austria had lost 3 regiments forever and Krakow had lost their only mobilized unit. Why isn’t their flag permanently white?

aemcrr.jpg

I’d taken victories in Split, Krakow, Pozenga, Trent, Lvov, Cernauti, and Nagyszben. If I were sitting on any provinces, it was only to entrap the Austrians.

1 November 1883

Obviously, concerning the Ostpreussen area, I was counting on militia to sprout up in the area so I could form a nice block around that sole Austrian unit. Luckily things seemed to be working according to plan. However, you’ll notice in the last pic that I’m fighting Bavarian units near Split and Austrians just north of Pozenga. Both of these were accidental battles.

The Bavarians showed up at the tail end of my battle with the Austrians in Split and because I was on the defensive and had those extra units lying around, I poured Russian might to aid in the battle.

As for the province north of Pozenga, I had attempted an encirclement however a flood of Austrians prevented that, stopping one of my units in that province. Since I had a defensive bonus and other units lying around, I poured more Russian troops into that area hoping for the best. You’ll also notice in the same pic that Mexico launched their Albanian Army into the war.

A few days after November began I had to flee in Trent, Bjelovar, and Lvov as it was obvious I wasn’t going to be able to reinforce those units in time. I had considered that I was fighting militia but it was too much. My first victory in November didn’t come until the 14th when I aided a Wallachian unit being assaulted by Austria. However, one day later I was forced to flee where I was battling the Bavarians… To finish up the month I lost 22 Man Of War ships in Marmara. Fortunately they weren’t carrying anything. At least it gets rid of my worn out wooden ships.

2t940.jpg

Notice I crept back into Austria’s Italy. Shh… don’t tell anyone. And the Mexican army is dwindling in the face of the Austrians.

My victories returned in December, all within the first two weeks: Stanisalov, Livno, Bor, Mostar (another accidental battle against Bavaria). Toward the end of the month I had managed to destroy another Austrian army through encirclement in Allenstein.

14e3t45.jpg

They made an attempt to save their friends. It didn’t work.

It was also a this point that I began sending all my Balkan units to and around Moldavia. It was my decision to let the Austrians waste their troops in attrition and petty battles with my puppets while I reinforced my armies and waited for another opportune moment to strike in the east.

Juan_de_Marco: The space definitely helps however when I have units popping up a quarter of the way around the world it can also be a detriment.

This Update’s Observation:
I make great observations.

***

January I had finally rid myself of that Austrian unit in Memel at the total cost of 33,754 Russians and 33,000 Austrians. I’ll claim that it was a good trade because not only did they permanently lose non-militia regiments but I have a total population count they can only be jealous of. And is this the new highest total death count? I know Murkden is still a few decades away ;)

In the same month I was able to demolish another Austrian army who, seemingly rose north to relieve the distressed army in Memel. When will they ever learn?

5l9d07.jpg

And Japan is taking the long way around. I was also pushed out of Austrian Italy again. I swear they’re just sitting inside the Fog of War.

Through February the only action that took place was the destruction of another Austrian army in Konigsburg.

But I also began a few maneuvers in Eastern Europe.

2 March 1884

igjbdl.jpg

vheys2.jpg

307ww9c.jpg

And as you can see, Austria seems like its isolating its armies in the various Balkan nations. I am not complaining.

Through March I ended up losing in Kielce however won in both Przemysl (although it didn’t feel like it with a 40k Russian casualty against an Austrian 15k) and the entire Wuttenburg army - approximately 25,000 - was destroyed in Tirgoviste.

The successes followed in April and May, the Austrians losing two more sizeable armies in the Balkans. At the same time I was beginning to occupy Austrian provinces just because of my encirclements: Deva and Udvorhely were both mine by the middle of May. My victories in the Poland area also compelled me to move in a nice southerly direction.

Around the same time both Serbia and Montenegro signed white peace offers with the Austrians. At least Greece is still helping amid a major battle loss for the Austrians again, losing a major army of 75,000 in late July.

2ngqttj.jpg

11 days into August and Italy and France signed a peace with Italy agreeing to Cut Spain Down To Size… which was a good thing for them because France also wanted Savoi and could’ve taken it.

Then as I continued to dive deeper into Austria without another battle since, Prussia declared war on me for Westpreussen on 10 September.
