Reign of Archduke Albrecht II von Habsburg 1356-
Chapter I - Breisgau, where it all started.
Chapter II - Mountain Men.
Chapter III - A meeting with the waves.
March 1356, Wien.
Sitting in the garden in his castle the Archduke was smiling, busy with overseeing his hunting dogs being trained, he was happy. Over the last two decades he managed to amass great wealth, extend his holdings and father 6 children. Children... He remembered his own childhood at the Habsburg castle in Breisgau, how he ran with his siblings playing tag and how he used to tease the girls at the nearby village. The archdukes smile was however now gone. Breisgau was not part of his land, something which he decided had to change.
The Duke decided to consult his advisers on how to act upon this matter.
The meeting concluded with the decision to declare war, the duke has a strong claim to the land and the land itself is very valuable as Silver deposits are found in the hills nearby.
Equally, the decision to send support to the Florentine school was made, the Duke hopes that this move will help him have a technological advantage over his closest rivals and maybe gain some prestige!
Before setting off to war, the duke made a quick inspection of his forces, 9 thousand strong, his personal retinue was one of the best in Europe. Drilled to perfection the soldiers were confident of an easy victory over any foe. He also ordered the formation of another army, as he does not wish for Wien to remain unguarded.
Sliders
Satisfied with his forces the Duke ordered for a Declaration of War to be sent, the messenger was also instructed to warn the States that will be on his way that an Austria Army will be marching through their lands shortly.
As for the Battle plans, they were simple, march through Bayern-Landshut and Wurtemburg directly into the enemy territory and force their Army to a quick confrontation and a swift defeat.
Battle plan
May 1356, Breisgau.
Not everything went as planned though. The battle was swift, but not decisive, the lords of Breisgau decided that they would rather perish in the castle rather than surrender.
But the Duke of Austria was reluctant to call for a storm of the castle where he grew up for fear of damage and had to be content with waiting for the enemy to starve to death before reclaiming his land.
In the meantime our Duke decided to leave the battlefield to go for a trip to nearby Burgundy, where Duke Phillipe, with whom we have long standing royal ties has arranged a jousting tournament in Dijon.
December 1357, Artoys.
The Archduke has spent over a year with the Duke of Burgundy, travelling his holdings our ruler has taken interest in the Northern holdings of Duke Pillippe, the land of flanders and hollande were bristling with wealth, perhaps one day the lands should pay him tax instead? During this period of time, the king of Poland, also a relative of ours has been crusading in Lithuania, and the Duke has decided to help him by dispatching some 8 thousand men to help him in converting the barbarians, after all he is a good christian.
Early in the morning of the 21st December a messenger arrived from Breisgau, his news bought joy to the ears of Albrecht, castle Habsburg is once again in the hands by their rightful owners.
The duke immediately set out to inspect his old castle, where his dearest childhood memories were made.
The surrender of Breisgau
