NEWS FROM PARIS, June 15th, 1912​

The City of Light has gone dark in remembrance of one the great leaders of the French Civil War and Second Bourbon Restoration. France has donned a black veil as the funeral procession ambles its way down the Champs-Elysees, where this great statesman can finally be allowed to rest in his family plot. An anarchist named Emille Cottin threw the fateful bomb, but he was merely a player in the greater machinery of the French radical opposition. No one expected this terrible blow, but many knew France was far from healed. The wounds of the Civil War had cut deep, and the tireless efforts of the French leadership had not yet produced an answer to the Burgundian Question, restored France's economy or bridged the fissures that tore open the nation. France is still a polarized country, and today's events have only worsened the divide. The planned general elections will most likely still be suspended, but many are unsure if there will ever be an election at all. Only time will tell, but time is a luxury that France may be in short supply of...

The Argentine Republic, in light of the recet events in South America, hereby requests the International Olympic Committe the relocation of the 1912 Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro. Not only the sanitary conditions endanger the well being of athletes and general public, but the reckless actions of the Brazilian Empress endanger regional peace and therefore the integrity of the delegations coming from the far corners of the Earth.

We trust that a suitable replacement can be found upon such short notice.

He worked tireless with Charles XII to make sure that France would not be torn apart by mad republicans and deranged anarchists. This cruel and shocking murder has shown that Left wing elements can longer trusted to live in Italy, only a with a radical final solution can this problem be solved. The Ongoing Affects of the New York Economics Conference​

As the nations of world embraced the teachings and proscriptions of the New York Economic Conferences, confidence was restored to markets and industries started to pick up production. One of the policies that had been adopted was that all currencies were now unlinked from the gold standard with the sole exception of the US dollar ((This is the current benchmark currency)). Whether, this upswing in the global economy would be temporary or merely the proverbial "eye of the storm" is anyone's guess, though many certainly hope that storm has passed and we can begin to pick up the pieces.

The following are the provisional stats with the retroactive changes afforded by the previous mini update. I am awaiting word from some of my fellow GMs on if they will continue, if not expect more to get the ax.

As of yet Hashoosh is GM of Western Europe, responsible for the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Her Majesty's Government is saddened by the most deplorable killing of Mr. Louis Victor Bonaparte, and can offer only its fullest condemnation against those who would exercise violence to political ends. We would stress that the latter applies to states and citizens alike, however. In regards to South America, we shall refrain from commenting any more than to call upon all parties to resolve their distresses by diplomatic means, as a continental conflict would be disastrous for all involved. Finally, we are bemused that the Chinese Emperor has time to contemplate the etymology of European cities. Perhaps he should be attending to his affairs at home, where his perfidious conduct has connived the united strength of the international community against him.

OOC: I would prefer if my currency was not free floating. I would like the legal requirement that a minimum of 40% of the Swiss franc be backed by gold reserves to remain. Switzerland has no reason to go free floating.
 
OOC: I have decided that I will not be continuing as GM for Southern and Eastern Europe. I have forwarded the orders placed by Greece, Russia, the Danubian Federation, Italy, and Turkey to KeldoniaSkylar, as well as my (incomplete) responses to those orders. I apologize, and wish for the best for all players and GMs who continue to remain on.
 
Following the great game of GM Musical Chairs, I am now GM for the nations of Russia, the Danubian Federation, Greece, Italy, Sweden, and the Turkish Republic. Following the upcoming update, all orders for these nations shall be sent to me. Don't re-send orders for this turn to me, as I will have all of them shortly anyway.

The Gustavian Manifesto

Sweden and the people of Scandinavia have sat content to watch international events from the sidelines. We have elected to be observers, not actors nor composers of the world stage; the audience to take in the performance of the play. Sadly, that time must come to an end. After Her Majesty's government in the Netherlands tragically, and misguidedly, de-regulated their private sector and allowed capitalists to run their country, the world economy collapsed in a twisted and demented game of dominoes: the blocks that fell were not made of fine porcelain and painted over with light acrylics, they were the great stock exchanges of the world, they were the livelihoods of millions upon millions of men who can now no longer provide for their families.

To this we say not again! The strong and proud Nordic race must stand ready to brave the challenges of such a tumultuous world in which we live in, we must not simply live and let die, but fight the crippling onset of poverty and deprivation. We must live, and let live.

How do we do that, my friends? My people? We have to stand strong and together, fight all threats both foreign and domestic with the utmost alacrity, and strive for a better world. As such, I am proposing a pan-Scandinavian customs union, the Tollunion. No good travelling over the borders of Norway, Sweden, Denmark nor Finland shall be subject to customs charges or tarriffs, as long as their origin and destination is within the Tollunion. We hope that warm relations can be restored to our Nordic brothers after the tumult of the XIX Century and humiliation by our cousins to the south and east.

Her Majesty's Government is increasingly vexed by comments, such as those recently professed by the Kingdom of Sweden, that we are somehow solely responsible for the international economic crisis. Such statements are not only insulting, juvenile and unnecessary; they further betray a lack of understanding of economic theory. In the past decade, Her Majesty's Government respected predominant economic practice - that growth and prosperity are best secured without the intervention of the state. In this, we are hardly dissimilar from most nations of the world. This is a cyclical depression, triggered by a crisis of confidence. It is unfair to assert that it is a product of economic misconduct. Furthermore, Her Majesty's Government rapidly undertook corrective measures when the crisis first began, which have already succeeded in staving off the worst. Moreover, the very capitalists that the Kingdom of Sweden bemoans were partly responsible for our recovery, having invested in new industries and labours.

The economic policy of Her Majesty's Government is substantiated by the most eminent economists, and was as responsible for the years of plenty as these recent years of poverty. As such, we demand a full apology from the Kingdom of the Sweden for their inappropriate and inaccurate commentary on our internal affairs.

My government will not rescind Our statements about Dutch Economic policy, and we will not certainly not apologize. We would also like to point out that these matters cease to be internal affairs of the Netherlands as soon as a global economic depression is caused by their practices. We hope that Her Majesty's government, which I should point out recently jumped out of so many windows, can see the light and take a stronger stance on economic regulations. Cant there not be years of plenty without causing such catastrophic policy? We ask that Her Majesty display more foresight when next deciding to allow Her country to be run by a pack of robber barons.

Having respectfully requested that His Majesty, the King of Sweden, withdraw his imprudent and harmful commentary, Her Majesty's Government shall not engage any further on this issue. The economic crisis arose from a general collapse of confidence in Europe, which spread throughout the remainder of the world economy. Such a crisis of confidence could have occurred in any European nation; that it first arose in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is evidence of misfortune, not carelessness.

Our economic practices have ensured decades of prosperity and stability within our nation and across the continent. Our commitment to free trade and the free market is based on the sound advice of our experienced advisers. Unless His Majesty, the King of Sweden, wishes to also attribute his nation's economic success to that of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, then he shall refrain from redirecting the blame in times of want. No single nation is to be held responsible for the health of the world economy.

Trials, Riots, and Speeches Galore​


With the economy still sinking, and the New York Economic Conference still churning along, producing better results, it soon became apparent that these results were at the top, and the top only. Bankers began to once again line their pockets, and the governments of various nations started to get more money to work with from these bankers. This lead the lower classes, essentially the same - jobless, homeless, and hungry - while the Governments began to proclaim everything was better with the world. The recently united French Kingdom, its foundation on shaky ground, suddenly exploded into riots, not fighting for another country, but fighting for the Kingdom to care for its citizens. Bread riots broke out in Paris, Marseilles, and Lyon. The Army was called in to help quell these riots, which lead to several people being shot dead by the Imperial Forces. The situation seemed to be getting worse and worse, until martial law was declared in Paris, restoring order, and creating a small, and meager, line for bread distribution.

Across the Rhine in the German Empire, things were getting even worse than in France. The recent collapse of the Government Coalition, with elections still pending, effectively gave the Kaiser control of the country. He started to enact some questionable reforms, a lot of which were met by huge opposition by the workers. After months of planning underground, the Red Army of Liberation of the Rhineland broke out in open rebellion against the German Government. Using stolen weapons from storehouses, this new Army started to kill Government officials and anyone who stood in their way, prompting the German Army nearby to immediately come to attention and meet this new threat. As the German Army moved in, the Army of Liberation moved out. It was good that these two sides clashed in the farm lands and not the city, because of the untold destruction caused by the two armies.

After both sides were able to dig in, the German Army constantly barraged the Liberation Army with shells and mortar rounds, hoping to break their resolve. The Liberation Army responded back with a few artillery shots - all that they had - but it was nothing compared to the massive, rolling barrage by the German Army. Reports say that the German Artillery guns were given the order to fire at 15:00 on Friday, and were not called off until 12:00 Sunday, the next week. While this did use an extremely large amount of ammunition, the Liberation Army was in tatters. A final charge by the German Army finally saw the rest of them subdued, and a normally peaceful farmland turned into a muddy, desolate, wasteland.

This carnage soon spread further, reaching into the Russian Empire, where the Army was mobilized to deal with the new threat. The normally successful Russian Army was beaten back at first, but after hard, long years fighting the Communist Forces, they were able to crush most of the resistance across the country, but it was in Kiev that it was hardest to crack. They had stolen Russian weapons and stolen German weapons at their disposal, and were able to hold our for a whole month against the Russian Forces, but in the end it was crushed under the mighty fist of the Russian Army.

The only other place any significant rebellions happened were in the Danubian Federation, where hungry workers in Vienna protested against the Government. However, after a show of force by the Danubian Army, they soon quickly dispersed, not wanting to get shot and killed by the forces of the Emperor. A speech was able to quell much of the protests, but it did little to solve the real problems facing the nation, the economy was in a downturn, and people were still hungry and homeless.

Another source for contention in Europe was when one of the bankers in the Netherlands, which was widely seen as the main factor in the economic bubble and collapse, was found Not Guilty by the jury for helping to create the crash. Thousands in the Netherlands broke out in anger, shouting in the streets, and threatening to take over the Government if this man was not jailed.

We, the King of Sweden, do hereby proclaim the foundation of the Tullunion, effective immediately. Signatories of the Treaty shall adhere to the following articles. Nations invited to the signing of this treaty are the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Finland.

1. Freedom of Trade
a. No duties shall be levied on any trader crossing the borders from one signatory to another
b. No tariff shall hold effect on goods manufactured in one of the signatory nations whose destination is another signatory
c. No impediments shall be made on goods travelling across the borders of a signatory nation
d. Corporations originating in one signatory country shall not be stopped or inhibited from competing in another signatory

The leaders of the Social Democratic Worker's Party (SDAP) and the Social-Democratic Party (SDP) have announced their intention to agglomerate their parties as the United Socialist-Democratic Worker's Party (VSDAP); this new parliamentary grouping possesses a plurality of twenty-five seats in the States-General. As such, in consultation with the Liberal Union (LU) and the Free-thinking Democratic League (VDB), we have decided to proffer our invitation to Mister Pieter Jelles Troelstra, leader of the VSDAP, to serve as Prime Minister, in a multi-party cabinet consisting of himself, his colleagues and the ablest ministers of the LU and the VDB. We hope that this new coalition shall restore confidence amongst the masses that Her Majesty's Government lives to serve the interests of the general populace, regardless of social or economic status.

If I could get war orders from everyone involved the Boxer War, it would be helpful. I am missing such orders from the Dutch and the Danubians. Additionally, Russia if they are war with China, according to the treaty.
