Hey. Now I'm sorry that I'm still lingering o this old board, but HOI2 doesnt work on my computer, let alone Doomsday. So I decided that I would keep my work on HOI going. As the title suggests, This is an aar about Iraq as a communist country, seeking to build a 'Greater Mesopotamia' Update shall come soon.

This shall be more serious them my very non serious AAR: History Class: A Swedish AAR. I hope you will enjoy it.

Background

The Land of Iraq is almost always considered 'the cradle of civilization'. Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar hailed from the state of Babylon which eventually evolved into Iraq.

In the 500s (BC), Persia defeated the Babylonians and added the region to their slowly growing empire. This lasted until Alexander the Great and his soldiers liberated the region in the 300s (BC)

Iraq was one of the first Moslem countries, where Islam spread in the 600s (AD). The Ottomans conquered it in the 1500s and Iraq would remain under their control until 1919. Britain was given Iraq as a mandate by the League of Nations, much to the dismay of the native Arabs. In 1930, Iraq was given independence as a limited protectrate. However, in 1934, The Growing Communist Party raised an army at Basrah and the Iraqi Civil War started
 
Iraqi Revolution

On February 1st 1934, 80 communist soldiers stormed the RAF base at Habbinyah to stop the British from supplying the Iraqi government. The airfield surrendered without a fight. Meanwhile 2 divisions of soldiers marched into Basrah, disarmed the garrison and arrested Rashid Ali who was on a visit to Basrah. 3 British Divisions were stationed at Kuwait and ordered in to try and crush the rebellion, but Stalin of the Soviet Union threatened Britain with war if it tried to help the Government.

Over the next 2 days, Mosul, Tikrit and Kirkuk all rallied to the Communist side. The Only resistance of the entire revolution came on the 4th of February at Fallujah, when 800 militia seized a armaments factory and refused to surrender. In the end, As soon as the Peoples Airforce of Iraq (From now on referred to as the PAI) bombed the outskirts, the Militia put down there arms and surrendered.

On February 5th, The remaining goverment surrendered. All British citizens of Iraq were told to leave. Many fled into neighbouring Iran where they were given access through to get to British Pakistan and India.

In 1935, The British Government finally recognized the Peoples Repubic of Iraq, but Nazi Germany refused to saying that the Iraqi Government was corrupt. That same year, Iraq became the 4th member of Comintern.

It does seem slightly contrived I must confess, especially Laughing Joe Stalin threatening the west with anything, especially in the mid-30s in the depths of his paranoia. For a man who had people killed for suggesting any alternative to 'Socialism in one country' it's out of character to have him supporting global revolution to say the least.

Equally the idea the British would just let the biggest oilfields in the world (at that time) slip out of their hands is... well far fetched is putting it mildly. :eek:

However it does have the benefit of being different and potentially very interesting indeed. I'll be keeping an eye on it certainly.

No Persia is just more developed, the British (mainly the AIOC/APOC I forget the exact date of the name change but it was mid 30s) are holding back the development of Mosul and the other Iraqi fields to keep their strangehold on the world supply. They know how big they are and any development will cause the price to fall substantially, hence lower profits for them. It really wasn't in their interests to open up the Iraqi fields, no matter how vast they were.

Given the British governments substantial holding in the AIOC that's a great deal of money, and a big strategic advantage, to suddenly give up without compensation.

Of bigger concern is a communist state with explicit backing (control?) from Stalin only a short hop across the Trans-Jordan from Suez, the most vital artery of the Empire! :eek: A slight over reaction to the situation? Perhaps, but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

Well actually, Stalin is an ally. He threatened the west by trying to make his armies look stronger then they really are. He has the great purges to come yet though

British Baghdad Embassy Siege Part 1

December 25th 1935
0800 Hours

Private Bobby stared out of the British Embassy Window. The little Iraqi mortars werent firing anymore. The Siege had been going on for 6 months, since Iraq joined Comintern and expelled British Nationals. Britian refused to surrender it's embassy so the current siege began. Bobby took a sip from his bottle and drifted back into his sleep.

1000 Hours

Bobby rose from his sleep to find himself staring down an Iraqi Gun.
"Hands up, or you'll be having a red christmas!" shouted the Iraqi.
Bobby was then escorted into a room and waited for several hours before a Renault R35 arrived to escort him to Kuwait and hand him over to the British.
"First, Christmas away from home, now this" thought Bobby as he and Sgt. Goodyear were driven to Kuwait. The Government were reluctant to set them free but when Britain threatened war, Iraq backed down and gave up the prisoners.
 
British Baghdad Embassy Siege Part 2

Ahmed walked out of the diplomacy room with some files. He pressed them into the hands of Cpt. Muhammed Hussain, the leader of the assault on the embassy.
"What are they, Comrade Ahmed?" asked Muhammed
"Top secret files from the British Embassy" answered Ahmed.
Muhammed opened it up and it revealed a large map with arrows pointing from Kuwait towards Um Qasr. It was a British Invasion plan. Muhammed was shocked.
"Send them to the House of Soviets immediately. No doubt, The Iraqi Military Council shall want to see this." he said
"OK Comrade Muhammed" said Ahmed and ran downstairs.

Operation Hammurabi

While the authenticity of the British invasion plan was being investigated, The Iraqi High Command met with the Soviet High Command and came up with Operation Hammurabi (The Russian section of the operation was called Nevsky). Iraqi troops would enter Van in south Turkey, While The Russians swept in from the east and mopped up any Turkish soldiers. The Alliance would then march on Ankara and share out Turkey.

The Invasion date was set as May 5th.
