I want to know if i should script some events for a reclaimation of the holy land scenario for Byzantium?

I think that would be very nice if you did ... preferably some working ones (contrary to the current Byzantine event-add-on)

Ok, how are these two events?

I havent tested them or anything yet - just running these by everyone first...think they would work?

Seems alright ... if all those required provinces aren't located in Asia ... ;)

The cores required to fire the Reclaim the Holy Land event are the cores I started Byzantium off with in the inc file and the cores i give them in the revival of the Empire event - it makes sense that the Empire would need to rule all of his "Core" territories before striking out on a campaign to expand at the expense of the Muslims... :D

hi.

I like your events by the way in your zip. These two however, I am not so sure. While I agree in part with your reckoning about the cores, I dont think ALL of them are necessary. For instance, the Levant was/is and always will be an important resourceful and strategic location to own, surely an expansionist Byzantium would look to al-Sham (Syria and the levant) in such expansion before trying to retake certain mountainous and unimportant provinces out 'in the sticks'. Also the amount of provinces needed for the event to trigger within such a 'short' timespan (you would have to be a rampaging monster to gain them all, in which case why bother with the event), seems unrealistic, and besides giving 1BB point for choice A seems to me like farting in a tornado. The choice B "No, leave that nightmare alone" I think should only give about +50 rather than +100 (now I am being picky :p )

Soz, if this sounds critical, but I REALLY do like your events, I just think the first one here needs a bit of work. But keep it up I would like to see more. nice job ;)

I should probably remove the island provinces as required provinces to trigger the event yes?

Also which provinces do you think would be most suitable to trigger it?

you need a solid base in order to attempt this conquest.

So Macedonia and Thrace (though on the wrong side of the strait there is manpower and grain for the troops).
Smyrna and Anatolia (without them there seems to lack a backbone for the operation).
Perhaps Trebizond (old territory that any Greek ruler would find more important).
Angora, Adana, Dulkadir, and Taurus (you need acces, but also you need to be sure that the access i safe and noone will interfere with troop movement).

If you want more provinces that could help improve your claims, you could say that you would need Cyprus (as ownership of Cyprus could give you some rights from the old Kingdom of Jerusalem).
Maybe all of Greece as a decent powerbase is needed in order to make sure Catholic Europe doesn't interfere.
You could take Ionia and Crete (as having them would have weakened Venice to such a degree that their objections would hold no real power over you - they can't touch you anyway).
You could add Rhodes too, as one could argue that the Hospitallers would go through the roof if they smelled blood in the Holy Lands again. (Personally I feel that it would be better to make some event for the Knight if they were still in Rhodes when the Holy Lands fall. They probably wouldn't interfere with the conquest (and probably wouldn't object either), but once conquored you can rest assured that they would throw in ALL of their ressources to make their CATHOLIC presence felt in the area. A diplomatic crisis would occur. The Knights' event: byz has Holy Lands - demand land? do nothing? demand presence? demand Kingdom of Jerusalem? Byz response event: attack? ignore? accept? ... and so forth

mostly agrre on this. Macedonia, Thrace, Smyrna, Anatolia, Trebizond, Angora, Taurus and Adana. Cyprus would be good for a claim (but a seperate event could fire for that, rather than being a needed core). The other islands are not important, as is Greece (yes, too have them is good and helpful, just not necessary). The events for Rhodes would be a good idea as well. But not HAVING Rhodes: Christianity as a whole may look upon that as unfavourably as The Knights will on taking the Holy Land (to a degree).

Posted the new events on the first post.

I removed the islands and Kaffa and Kerch from the required cores in the Reclaim the Holy Land event.

I also added events for a "Crusade against Byzantium" for the Papacy, France, Spain, Hungary, and Austria which gives them a CB for 24 months if Byzantium refuses to invade the Levant...

@Ayeshteni: Did you read my post at all?
- MAYBE all of Greece as a decent powerbase is needed in order to make sure Catholic Europe doesn't interfere. (IOW: only necessary to make sure the Catholics don't get any funny ideas)
- You COULD take Ionia and Crete (as having them would have weakened Venice to such a degree that their objections would hold no real power over you). (IOW: As above, only with regards to the greatest naval enemy of byz)
... so basically I fail to see what you are trying to add with your post ...

@angelscotboi: Why on earth should the catholics get a CB on byz if byz refuses to take the Holy Lands ... it is more like they should get a CB if they actually take the Holy Lands (and refuse to do with said lands what the pope wants to).

The reason they get a CB is because the Pope has called for a crusade against the resurgent Byzantine state.

A resurgent Byzantium would be highly dangerous to a catholic west and if Byzantium had managed to claw back its territories and become powerful again then the Orthodoxy would once again be able to challenge the Pope so the Pope would pre-emptively strike at them.

The events are based on the premise that Byzantium fears a catholic attack on their rebuilt Empire - and agrees to attack the Levant to convince the Pope not to attack.
If they refused then a catholic attack would most certainly have eventually came - which is why the Crusade events are there...

And so byz is to take Outremer to apeace the pope? How can an even further expansion of byz territory make the pope calm?
I think I misunderstood what you said here ...

Because Byzantium would be the only Orthodox nation of note - all the others would have either been annexed or not inclined to aid Byzantium.
Whereas the Pope has many many catholic nations to call upon - seems quite sound reasoning to me...

Indeed I did read your post. And at the time of writing the first sentence I said I MOSTLY agreed with you. (as it happened as I was writing, I modified my thinking, and effectively agreed with you - I just didnt go back and delete that 'mostly'). I am sorry if you feel that some-one who agrees with you constitutes a waste of space. , as two people who agree on an issue is more constructive than 30 people with totaly differing opinions. Nevertheless.....

here, I also agree with you (stinker isnt it? ;) If the Papacy is concerned about a resurgent 'Eastern Christian' state like Byzantium, they would not feel confident about them holding the Levant. Having the wrong Christianity in control of the sacred spaces of Jerusalem (and being the dominant faction) would not lie comfortably on the Popes shoulders. During the fourth 'crusade' 1195-1204, the Pope was appalled that Christians fought Christians (the Venetian conquest of Zara) but eventually backed it against Constantinople as it would 'unify' the churches (by effectively removing the orthodox power base and replacing it with Latin Christian figures), and providing a supposedly secure powerbase for the Latin reconquest of the Holy Land. The First Crusade was also evidence of not wishing the Orthodox East reclaiming the Holy Land as instead of returning conquer territories back to the Byzantine Throne (as was arranged), they were instead turned into Latin demesnes under the authority of the Holy See in Rome.

Therefore, any Byzantine 'aggression' against Latin interests in the region. (which in my post I beleive I state about the taking of Rhodes being anathema to the West and therefore fostering the ire with Western Christianity!!!) would involve more reciprocation with the Western Powers. Which would of course result in direct confrontation between Western and Eastern Christianity. The result in the Levant would most likely involve conflicting Crusaders in little more than land-grabbing and would likely result once more in Christian/Muslim co-operation against Muslim/Christians etc.

@angelscotboi: I really cannot comprehend your logics (which is why I think I must have misunderstood what you were trying to say). - But here goes another attempt ...
The pope dislikes byz, because byz har wrong religion. Pope wants Catholic faith to be stronger than Orthodox. So pope demands that byz conquor Holy Lands???? That can only make byz stronger, and put even more power in the hands of the Orthodox church. People will rally to the orthodox faith. Why the Hell would the pope want to strengthen the Byzantine powerbase?

@Ayeshteni: Fair enough ... I just have a tendency to get a bit annoyed at redundancy :) ... And no, I don't consider a post that agrees a waste of space ... but a post that disagrees, without adding anything new - that's a different story.
But let that lie now now - we agree, and that's a good thing :)
Finally I should add that no, it's not stinker ... actually Sikker is my name (middle name to be exact).

Please read my posts correctly.

The Pope hasnt demanded anything - Byzantium OFFERED to attacked the levant for CHRISTIANITY to stave off an attack by the Catholics on a newly resurgent Orthodox Empire - the Pope would accept because he would be happier seeing the Levant in the control of fellow Christians than in the hands of the infidels...
And if Byzantium decided against offering to attack the levant then the Catholic attack would therefore not be staved off or diverted.

Wheres the confusion?

My only reasoning for confusion is you are thinking with a decidedly modern view point and not trying to think how people back then thought...

My reason for confusion is that you haven't mentioned that byz were to 'offer' an attack on Levant before now.

It might be true that the Pope would rather see Jerusalem in the hands of the Orthodox than in the hands of Muslims.

But if the Pope can 'threaten' byz to a conquest, they can most certainly also threaten them hand over the new won lands.

So I still don't think the argument quite holds ... unless you idea is that the Papal States (with the Catholic world in it's back) immediatly following the conquest starts demanding the land handed over.

Also, how is it you see that 'with the old way of thinking' that byz would offer to attack Levant, if they feared a catholic attack?

Finally I should add that now I can follow your argumentation, I just don't agree all the way :) ...

Perhaps now you will see my logic in the early set of events...

I need monarchs and leaders for the Kingdom of Jerusalem - the JER tag; which the Papacy will demand Byzantium free after they conquer the levant...

So the Events work like this:

Byzantium defeats its foes and unites its Empire under the Constantinople banner.
Resurgent Byzantium reconquers the remainder of its mainland territory.
The Pope fearing the Byzantines will try to reunite the Empire of Basileus orders the Catholic west to prepare to attack the Byzantines first.
Byzantines hoping to avert a catholic attack proposes to retake the levant for Christianity. (OR No offer is made and attack proceeds as planned)
Pope accepts Byzantine offer.
Byzantium attacks the Mamelukes and siezes the levant.
Mamelukes ceed claims to the levant. (Need events for this - cant be arsed scripting them yet)
Pope demands that Byzantium release Jerusalem as an independent state.
Byzantium accepts and appoints a King in Jerusalem. (OR feels it is now strong enough and ignores the Pope; and the attack proceeds as planned)
Jerusalem independent - pleased Pope.
Jerusalem ally and buffer between Byzantium and the muslims - Byzantium pleased.

Everyone pleased except sikker  .

I would do the monarchs and leaders for JER myself but for some reason my computer wont let me save the monarch files with their country tag...ie it saves as monarchs.jer.txt instead of monarchs.jer...

Also if someone would script the Mameluke seceeding event that would be lovely... :D

Ive just completed the independent Jerusalem events...Will add them up to the zip as soon as i have the monarchs n leaders...

To me this sounds just great! :)
Tell me, do you want flavor events/minor events for Byzantium too? I could help you with that (when I have enough time, that is...).
