I a new CK3 player and loving the game so far. Just finished the tutorial as Ireland and it was very helpful. My long term goal is to take over the Empire of Britannia and make it Irish culture as well. Still playing as the original character and I have 4 kids -- the year is 1086.

Just really curious about one mechanic and that is how I can keep the realm together as I continue to expand. I have created the Kingdom of Ireland and all Duchies in it - now I wondering who do I give it to in order to maintain my realm past my death. Do I give away the petty kingdoms to my kids? Do I give to all my kids?

Thanks in advance!

If you give land to anyone that is part of your dynasty, they will automatically become your vassal so the land will stay in your realm (just not under your direct control). However, if you give land to anyone that is not part of your dynasty they MUST ALREADY BE ONE OF YOUR VASSALS or they will get the land and just become an independent nation. Succession laws will also determine how land is split up when you die. This won't cause your realm to loose land, but it's a bitch when you're about to create the kingdom of Ireland and you die and now your brother has half of your crap.

UPDATE! I Need URGENT help please! I am doing quite well, but the succession question is rather ... difficult. Basically I have conquered all of Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Trying to create the British Empire, but I will lose all of Alba (Scotland) which makes the campaign end for me if I cant stop that somehow.

My only son is a the duke of Circinn (and Prince) he is in line to get the Alba claims and the rest of England. The other part of de jure Ireland is split to another. Still got the save game if anyone wants it!

Thanks in advance!

You can always get it back. You'll have claims on everything you already had even if it's split off to another heir. So just go to war with them and take it all back.

I will basically lose it permanently until I can take enough counties (I am missing 25 or so before secession) in order to make the Empire of Britain. Would put me back a hundred years at which case I might as well just start a new one

You'll have claims you can push and if you are a king you should be able to challenge for the king title provided you have been building up your cores it should be a quick war.

That doesn't work unfortunately. I am now trying to declare war on the king of Scotland, but it doesn't work. I can only claim a single county in the war goal tab! That means my tutorial run is over..... I am not going to conquer Scotland all again for nothing

Basically me usurping the Kingdom of Scotland was a stupid idea in hindsight (not for a new player). Even though I conquered literally all of it I couldn;t form the Empire rank because I needed 25+ counties in England.

Even when I changed to 1 ruler law it didn't update, I still have an election. That was before my death too. Something is bugged

Upload your save and I'll look into it, unless someone else does it first. I have a few suspicions based on how CK2 worked, but things might work a bit differently in CK3, so I'd best check in game.

You should have been able to fabricate a claim on a Duchy or A kingdom. I just fabricated on a Duchy last night.

The court chaplain requires 9+ Learning in order to be able to fabricate claims on duchies.. And even then there is only a 20% chance that the claim will be for the entire duchy, so it's not a reliable method.

I wish I understood at least 10% of the information above. How does everyone know all this, I read the diaries and watched Youtubers - is it based on CK 2 experience (which I never played). I love the game thus far, but I am in a fog on a lot or areas. When I read stuff like that above.., man, I feel really lost.

I'm both a CK2 veteran with over 2000 hours played and a modder who learned to read game files directly, so I can look up that sort of information in the current game files.

And the simplified version of the above information is that only skilled court chaplains can fabricate claims on entire duchies and even then it doesn't always work.

Here I will upload the save games. Remember that you CAN change the succession doctrine. I tried to play around with it but it didn't change anything for me. Already have high crown authority. Feel free to see if you can save the disaster!

Don't worry dude there are a ton of moving parts to this game that seemingly need to be learned all at once. I recently got into CK2 and have about 150 hours in that and I still feel lost a lot. Basically the best way to learn how the game works is to set up a plan for how you're going to proceed and watch it all fall to shit because a bunch of stuff happens that you didn't even think to consider.

Okay, your situation can be salvaged in two steps:
1. Change realm succession to High Partition
2. Destroy the kingdom of Scotland

For #1 go to the Realm window (or press F2), click the Succession tab, and click on the Change button for the succession law. Pick High Partition from the list as it's the best one you have available. This will cost you 500 Prestige.

For #2 click your character (or press F1) and look at the list of owned titles. Click on the coat of arms of Scotland. At the bottom of the menu that opens there is a Destroy Title button. Use it to get rid of Scotland. This will cost you 800 Prestige.
