Trade has always been perceived as one of the less interesting aspects of the game when it was a driver for many political and civilization changes in the era.

Now, trade feels gamey, with the player controlling every trade route interacting through a window that looks like a spreadsheet.

We could have a trade window with traders, characters from our nation and/or foreigners that the King or Senate ask/allow to trade.

Each region having a trader that will have a set of priorities for all provinces, like a player does. High value trade goods, happiness bonus, units bonus, etc… Instead of a spreedsheat, the selection of priorities will come as a dialogue with the trader.

Traders will scan the market and get the best trades available following the nations preferences as they have been told (auto import trade is already implemented)

For example, in the capital region, the player may ask to have iron surplus to get HI, happiness surplus for all citizens and high trade value goods. As long as enough trade routes are open in the region, the trader will import goods to fulfill all these demands.

Traders job is passed from father to son/daughter but they cost money from characters to get the job. When a new region opens up for a character trader, the player can appoint a character that has enough money to pay (dynamically set as per number of trade routes). This cannot be abused by selling the trader postion many times as the player only appoints traders when the position becomes vacant due to the character dying and not having heirs. Also, traders positions can remain vacant if no character has enough money to pay for it. The best positions will be taken only by very rich characters. A region without a trader is a problem as no import/export will happen there and all existing trade routes will be voided.

Traders jobs have reduced senate influence. It increases revenues for characters that is not payed by the state. Traders jobs reduce power base, as the game already has a problem of power base inflation and a trader will be occupied in other matters. Traders will vastly increase family prestige, though.

Sending a Family head as a trader could be used instead of bribing or giving free hands to improve the loyalty of a character. A disloyal trader will not follow instructions but will keep trading for its own benefit.

Traders will generate events from time to time that may allow the player to choose between available trade goods, give a trade CB with another nation, ask for a position in the government, etc.
