Ooh, and we see the rise of a National Socialist party in France, of all places. I look forward to seeing more from these new Nazis...hopefully, Thorez doesn't follow entirely in his historical counterpart's footsteps. But, how are Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the UK (Especially the first two, since they fought against France the first time 'round, but the latter, too, merely for being a nearby capitalist nation with a growing rapport with Germany) reacting to the rescinding of Versailles?

Excellent as ever. I think I'm seeing why a pacifist Kaiser was necessary from a narrative perspective.

I must admit I'm curious to know what the capitalist powers are thinking of this French move. I can't imagine the British taking kindly to the French building a navy when they've finally reestablished total naval hegemony.

National socialism.... hilarious!

Great update as well. I would imagine Europe acting as they did when Hitler rearmed himself: written complaint. They were too tired fo war to provoke him and take action, and I imagine the same would happen here (though Germany seems more inclined to go to war against France in this alternative history than France was to go to war with Germany in "real" history).

This is shaping up to be so cool.

And just *now* the Kaiser had to turn peaceful...a pity. they will probably just build the Siegfried line, massive bunkers to be flanked out through Belgium...

This is brilliant! Truly brilliant!

This is alternate history in its best form! :) Far above and beyond ordinary AAR format...

BTW - how did you get to choose people like Trendelenburg, Thyssen and Kastl as German cabinet members? I thought I was fairly familiar with the period, and I recognized Thyssen and Oskar von Hindenburg, but I had to look up Kastl and the others. I didn't even find much on them, besides a small tidbit mentioning Ludwig Kastl as chairman of the RDI (the lobby group of the German heavy industry in the 20's and 30's).

Have you studied history professionally?

Nice update, Yogi, and a vivid story. You don't even need to do the game, just write! :) I was wondering if you could get into detail a bit about the navies of the world after WWI, particularly any hint of a 'cold war' between the High Seas Fleet and the Grand Fleet. As France seems to be going more to submarines, what about some of the other navies? Are developments in carriers, for example, still on the same evolutionary path?

I think Yogi answered the relations between the British and German governments. AFAIK Germany has relegated its convoy protection duties to Britain in exchange for stopping the arms race that continued through WWI. That is one of the reasons for the increased German-British relations. Plus there was a Washington Naval Treaty signed in 1924(?). Its like chapter 7-8 I think.

I was actually thinking the same thing -- perhaps use the game to model the outcome of Battle X, but not too much more than that? Otherwise, the AIs, even reprogrammed, would be bound to do things that would screw up the narrative -- I'm thinking of the 80+ divisions in Washington, from WTICG.

Good Idea. But whatever you decide there you should seriously consider posting your story on an Alternate History board.
Anyways I consider everything pretty darn plausible. Like nationalism turning the tide in the pacifist/militaristic standoff, etc.
The German Siegfried if it comes about line might actually work better than the Maginot Line did in OTL. The primary reason it was never extended all the way to the sea besides the cost factor was that it would have meant an abandonment of Belgium. Since Germany has no such commitment and did have a plan of their own for a Sweep through Belgium as in the last war as well as the Ruhr Valley being right next to Belgium they might very well build a defensive line all the way from the cost to Switzerland.
Question for Yogi: With Einstein et al not leaving Germany are we going to see some German Nuclear Weapons project? Perhaps started by a letter from Einstein to the Kaiser warning him about the threat of French or Soviet Nuclear Weapons.

Crickey! I turn my back on your AAR, Yogi, and I come back to find la belle France the home of some obnoxious ideology which is apparently ineradicable in any alternate history thread of that time, and Trotzky assuming the role of Stalin.
IS that narrative causality or is it? ;)

Good job!

Will we also hear about the fate of Austria-Hungary?

Zephyr 3, Ho Chi Minh : Of course, Thorez and his bunch aren't true "Nazis" - German National Socialism was in its roots a romantic movement, while the French brand, with its roots in Communism is enlightment with just a sprinkle of Romantic Nationalism. There is for example no racial or pagan mysticism, just some rooting for "La France" that is remarkable only for being professed by Communists. By the time Versailles is rescinded, the neighbours can do nothing without triggering a full scale Great War Mk II.

Evil Capitatlist : Thanks! Yes, it was pretty necessary or World War II would have been fought in 1922. :) The British have made an Imperial Popoo for themselves, since at their INSISTANCE, France was allowed to mantain a fleet of current strenght in the Versailles treaty (this was before the revolution) and since France then disbanded most of the fleet, the one arm they can build up substantially WITHOUT breaking Versailles is the fleet. Of course, a massive French Sub Fleet is a British nightmare...

Dhatori, Sir Humphrey: Thank you, Sir!

Archanglel85 :Something like that, yes.

Karl Martell :Thank you, I'm honoured. Regarding the cabinet, I'm afraid it was just the Paternal Autocrat leaders available to Germany in 1936, so can't take any credit for that. Kudos belong to Paradox's researchers. I have studied history at University for one year, if that qualifies. Half of the time was economic history. I am however an avid reader of history. I'm currently having an Antiquity binge, reading Tom Holland's "Rubicon" and previously Peter S. Wells book on the Teutoburger Wald battle.

Zuckergußgebäck : Japan is coming up in the next update. They cancelled the Alliance with Britain soon after the Great War though.

elbasto : Yep, Germany is in for some pretty rough times... Maybe America can help? (BTW, if Germany is wiped out, I will continue playing as Britain or the USA).

Mettermrck, Mind Elemental : Thanks Met, one naval history of the 20s and 30s coming up for you soon. I am BTW very aware of the failings of the AI and are playing with nothing but custom AI files for all the mayor participants. There will also be events to help steer things in a reaonable direction. And finally, I'm saving a fantastic amount of saved games, so if things go coocoo I'll go back and fix whatever is causing the abberrant behaviour. I'll be writing very much after the facts of the game, using the game more as inspiration than canon.

KingMississippi : You're right, but I haven't said much about the navies of non-european countries like Japan and the USA. I'll try to adress this soon.

Neroon : Perhaps, do you know of any page that'd have me? As I've understood it, the French deliberatly did not prolong the line to the sea to encourage the Germans to go through Belgium in order to insure that Britain would enter the War and be able to fight on neutral (rather than French) ground. Thus Plan D and the Maginot line were integral parts of the French overall strategy and not just a battle plan. Germany, in fact migh be in a similar situation regarding the role of Britain in this timeline.

And regarding your question... meet the latest addition to Germany's tech team community:

Meltdown1986 : Thanks! And yes, you will. This Mega-prologue is coming to an end and the game is about to begin (has begun, actually).

I was planning to wrap up this prolouge now, with just one more post before beginning the actual AAR. Since I have to replace the knowledge of what you know about the historic 1920s and 1930s with this, I thought I had to be pretty detailed, but of course I cannot cover everything, so I thougt to take up requests for the final post. So far, I have Japan in the 20s and 30s and the Naval history of the era outside of Europe. What else would you like to know about?

I'd like to hear some more about Italy. Which direction are the political currents there heading? If they are moving along a similar path as in real life, I imagine the Italian nationalists are very unhappy with the growing red threat on their western border!

Austria! Austria! Austria! Austria! :D I want to hear about how merry old Austria came to break apart. What you hinted at in the beginning is really intriguing... the way I see it, WW1 came just on time to make the breakup of Austria-Hungary the last gasp of rabid 19th century-style nationalism. Had it come only ten years later, communism would have added an entirely new kind of ingredient to the mess... but anyways, I'd love to hear how the red armies were founded and what the nature of their movements is... And also maybe a few sentences on how the old empire fared in the few years after the Great War! I alwass found it amazing how the Habsburg empire maintained a suprising amount of cohesion in the first years of the war, when you'd have expected it to keel over, and then an equally surprisingly fast and complete collapse once the powers that be (Entente) made clear that they would fully back the Czech nationalist movement, and not negotiate with the Habsburgs.

You should do a general, short prologue of the political and economic circumstances of all the second tier states that have not been mentioned; as Karl and others say, Austria (Definitely.), Japan, China and Italy perhaps, and a general survey of the scene in 1936 as an introduction to the main action.

Also, perhaps a piece on Britain and America politically between the wars. (If indeed you suppose anything would have happened differently - I'd certainly like to know, for instance, if the Liberal Party disintegrates in this timeline.) After that, though, do as you say and start the thing proper.

Don't listen to the people who want hear about everything from botty-wiping in China, 1929-1934 upwards though. There'll be time for more coverage of these details when the AAR kicks off. :)

I would like to know about China, and what happens in china, has the revolution caught them to with the series of revolutions across the world? And I want a good overview (say a map) of africa so that I can get a good picture of how it looks.

Great AAR!
