Good morning all,

I find myself in a position I've never experienced before; actively wanting to lose a war.

I have a game with Byzantium where I hold the majority of the eastern med, and the western half of Anatolia. Unfortunately my closest ally (Hungary) also hold some land on Anatolia around Pontus/Trebizond. Obviously I don't want to go to war with them (partly because my other big allies are also their allies; Austria and Spain). We have the OPM Theodoro sandwiched between us on Sinop. Hungary keeps going to war with Theodoro, calling me in, me occupying Theodoro, and Hungary peacing out for war reparations.

We're currently on a 5 year truce timer, and I have a plan but need some input on the actual mechanics so I don't waste my time. My thought is to declare on Theodoro myself, call in Hungary, and then peace out offering them Hungary's provinces. Alternatively I could unconditionally surrender. This is where I'm not clear; can I offer Theodoro a load of provinces regardless of current warscore? Can I even offer them Hungary's provinces at all?

If I can't do the above, I could still offer unconditional surrender I guess? If I do so, my presumption is that Theodoro will annex provinces starting with cores then claims then...possibly monetary reparations? I assume they will be able to take cores from Hungary as well as from myself?

One of the main problems with this strategy is the Hungary won't join a war against Theodoro with me because they are 8500 in debt. I have a fairly strong economy, so should be able to pay this off for them by the time 5 years is up (in the form of a gift).

Any help would be greatfully received, thanks!

Edit: Perhaps this should be in the main forum, not sure?

The best way to force someone to accept your surrender (like when you want them to change your religion) is to 100% them. However in that context I think you can only offer your own provinces. To give an ally's provinces they need to be occupied by Theodoro, which obviously negates getting to 100%.

Technically this is possible, although the circumstances probably make it very unlikely.

Assuming Theodoro has no allies, if you occupy all of their provinces (or just one province in this case) for 5 years your war score will automatically set to 100% no matter how much warscore you had previously. This means that you can force any demands you want on them, including giving them land (even if they don't want it/can't core it).

Step 1: Occupy Theodoro. DO NOT WIPE OUT ANY OF THEIR TROOPS.

Step 2: (Hopefully) Theodoro’s stack should have wandered somewhere into Hungary’s territory to occupy the provinces you want Hungary to lose. Note: Theodoro needs to be able to actually take these provinces. So you can’t just randomly give them Pest in the peace deal even if you had 100% war score, because Theodoro physically does not have the ability to take it in the peace deal, regardless of desire. Since you're offering them Anatolian provinces though, the only requirement should be that either Theodoro has occupied them and they have a coast, or occupied while simultaenously being connected to another province that Theodoro has occupied.

Step 3: Without resieging any of the occupied Hungarian provinces, wait 5 years.

Step 4: You should now have 100% war score, meaning you can take (or give) anything in the peace deal. Give Theodoro your selection of provinces.

As you can see, the required steps make this more than improbable, meaning it's probably better for you to just declare war on someone else that Hungary is allied to and just take their provinces that way instead.
