Stuck on first contact tutorial

Im on my first playthrough on a full tutorial game. Ive gone through the contact steps with some nearby primitive crystal things, but the game hasnt registered it, nor do they show up in the empires or species list.

Moved to the main forum for a wider audience.

I can see this might be a bug in the tutorial, OR that the "crystal things" you mention don't count as a alien race for this purpose.

Hopefully the experienced gameplayers here can help in more detail!
