Having some trouble getting a Steam copy of the game to work with a non-Steam copy. We keep getting different checksums; what's going on? We both have 2.32c, totally clean installations, etc.

It's the steam copy, here was a thread about this quite long time ago and it appears that steam copy doesn't work with "normals". There may be some hidden trick for this but I don't remember..

The correct non-Steam checksum is SWBL (note that you have to exit the game and start it up again to get a clean checksum read). I don't know what the Steam one is offhand, but Steam do change romegame.exe for their own purposes which will likely give it a different checksum. You ought to be able to play against each other via the Metaserver, but not Direct IP, I'm sorry.
