The upper 1/3 of the overview map is blocked by UI elements.

No one playing this game during development thought it would be useful for the overview map to pan an additional 50% in every direction so the borders of the maps could be looked at clearly? Sheesh.

Panning of the overview map and additional zoom layers should be added stat.

I don't want to see the outer terrain. I want to see the areas I'm trying to develop. The outer zoom is too far away, and the upper regions are blocked by UI elements. The 1st level of zoom is too close, IMO.

e.g. at game start, when i click on probes, the upper-central 18 squares are all blocked by the big blue hint screen. If I could pan the map up a little bit, they would be centered. There is a natural urge in most civ/city builders to look at your civ/city at the center of the map.

Also, the outer areas are only ugly if you make them ugly.

The zoom out needs a rework as well...it jumps to the "world" map too quickly when zooming out. It makes it damn near impossible to get a good idea of what's nearby and how you want to build.

And the resource overview blocks the right hand side of the map.
