EU2 is still a great game and it remains markedly different from EU3 or EU4 by the relatively lower system speed and video card requirements needed to run the game.
If it is worth to you investing your time depends on you. If you like great strategy games - certainly.
If the game out of the box has not enough events for you there are several mods that enhance that aspect of the game (e.g. AGCEEP) in the mod subforum.
