When you have multiple colonies around each-other all of their borders appear the same way. This can make locating unexploited sectors within your domain difficult as they might be surrounded by borders.

I suggest having differentiating borders between colonies, and those that face enemy / unowned territory to make the map more legible and less cluttered. If you leave just the white center part of the border on the inside, while keeping the color on the outside I believe this will already go a great deal towards ease of viewing.
