It has been 20 years since the battle at Peya system, and the new GAC President Red Shoot has announced a new eugenics program that will be phased into all Alari worlds, first modifying the Alari species, then any other species that requests for the gene mods. The Alari have now considered themselves master of the genomic system in the galaxy, and this is independently confirmed by several Curator Enclaves.
The upgrade will be rolled out after referendum, in which Alari species can decide what upgrades they wanted. Unanimously they wanted to improve both the body and mind of the Alari Species.
mods.png

Specifically, the pain that Alari experience in childbirth will be largely gone, due to a revolutionary redesign of Alari embryology that made its healthy neonates weigh 700g instead of 3.5 kg as is the case before. The neonates are protected with a fully functional immune system that is resistant to most known pathogens. The immune system was redesigned as well, featuring breaks that stop the positive feedback cycle that runs rampant in some former immunological disorders.
The Alari brain is completely redesigned. It now harnesses several quantum principles and increases in orders of magnitude complexity over the previous version, which is extremely remarkable.

The base Alari DNA has been modified to carry more redundant regions, that take over if damage was detected in genes. It now actively rejects foreign injection by viruses. Because of the anticipated life span in space, many DNA protective measures were introduced, that activates when under high radiation. One such process was the curling up of the chromosomes.
The cell cycle checker is made more robust and handles any runaway growth of the rogue cells. The skin is modified to accept energy from stellar radiations which enhances energy production in the cells.
There are multiple secretory organs that are under frontal lobe control and secretes chemicals as needed, reducing much pain and regulates the metabolism of the Alari species.
Dependency on outside nutrients have been reduced and Alari survive on much less food than before. Although redundant organs were suggested they didn't make the cut, instead the vital organs all had much more capacity than before, providing the redundancy they needed.
Reproductive organs were... enhanced. The less said the better about this one. However they've lost the rapid breeder status, as more time was devoted to other pursuits than breeding.

Eye acuity were improved, and the already heightened hearing is further heightened, with internal control by frontal lobe to turn sound off added. Bony parts of the nose was made more robust and teeth made decay-resistant through resistance to pathogens built into marrows.

As the modifications came with major changes, the challenge had been to create a vector to change the somatic cells, ie turning existing Alari to Alari Superior. Fortunately an operation was designed using Riggan Spice to overcome the internal resistance to the DNA changes, and the use of Living Metal to excise rejecting tissues. The process would take days, but the population was ready for this.

The nationwide process will take 31 months to complete, creating the new species - Alari Superior

Mindful of the threat posed by the Dark Alari Empire in a distant galaxy that seem to be able to traverse into this one, and other entities far stronger than those faced by the First Star League, the Alari War Ministry had designed a new flagship - the type 37 Dreadnought, a ship that is based on the hull of the type 69 automated dreadnought, but much leaner and armed with 7 gigacannons. Further addition of the Quantum Gate Missiles are possible. The Admiralty decided to go on a recruitment drive and enlist millions of ensigns aboard the new fleet: an armada set to dwarf anything seen so far, with planned 1600 Dreadnoughts, and the abandonment of any Cruiser and Destroyer class vessels. Corvettes will be maintained for scout /recon missions only.

The engine will be augmented by Psi-warp drive system, found on technology researched by the new Alari Psionics research committee. This is set to cut systems travel by 1/3 of the time, although the old wormhole gates are maintained for movement of League forces within the Alari space.

The integration of the Union of Jogollwans is continuing, with estimated 25% completion rate. Once completed the Jogollwan society will be completely restructured to reflect League norms

Masters of the Genome, soon-to-be Masters of the Universe. Amirite? ;)

A level ten repeatable tech?! The Alari are certainly doing well. The fight against the dragon and the digression on researching the egg were both interesting.

there will be some intergalactic scourge to ruin the day

What? Everyone knows intergalactic travel is difficult, and incredibly unlikely. Anyone who thinks otherwise has consumed too much fiction. ;)

One can only improve :)

Chapter 5: War of the Heavens
chimm conservers.png

The Alari frontier worlds reported back some sobering news... it seems that an old empire is awakening, and seeks to restore its former glory. Although the Chimms are worrying enough, they are thought to be knowledge seekers with a strong anti-AI streak, content to be stuck on their ringworlds. However, the Other enigmatic empire was not so peaceful in the past, and they've also became active of late.

The Alari called for a League council meeting, coming up with a plan with other nations on how to deal with these recent events, and if they threaten those bordering the 2 former empires. The meeting is to be held in former Jogollwan space of Ogo.

Of this, nothing good will come.

Agreed. This is indeed worrisome.

As the heads of state arrived on the capital city of Ogo, Wanjo system, the atmosphere was concerning. The activated fallen empires as they were called, presented an unique threat to their system of stability which had lasted for over 100 years. What do those beings want from the galaxy?
"We will start our meeting now," said the Prime Minister of Immuthor, the reigning Chair of the Righteous Alliance.
The nations will speak in turns, clockwise from their position in the galaxy. The Immuthorians will speak first, then the Alari, then the associate member, the Jogollwans,
after that the Kel Azaans, the Sintomorois, and the Mandasura Manufacturing Collective, finally the Othethi League.
"Without further ado, we have the latest troop movement data on the Rutharians, I'll leave the Chimm to the Alari nation. The Rutharians have moved their fleets into the sectors of Yggrolia and Karos, two neutral systems bordering the Othethi Confederation and Kel Azaan Republic respectively. The fleets both contain at least 1 Titan class warship.
"As to the titan warship's firepower... you can see it for yourself"
A visual of the titan warship gun firing is displayed, it showed a transport vessel being vaporised under the energy output. There was some murmur amongst the delegates.
"We have with our Alari allies discovered many hidden drones implanted on our planets, sometimes disguising as innocuous objects. It is through these spy devices they put in centuries ago they have kept abreast of the galaxy's events.
"Hence why this meeting is held in Ogo, the planet surface was completely bombarded and most listening devices destroyed, the reconstruction began 20 years ago and we are free of most of the spy devices of the ancients. Most Jogollwans were given chance to evacuate, of course." He looked at the Jogollwan PM and detected no hostility, so he continued.
"Recently the devices became active, as cloaked scouts started to appear. Here we have the model of the ship available" he clicked to a visual. "Without advanced surveillance tech it is extremely hard to detect those spy ships, they are the size of a corvette or less.
"Furthermore, we have bought this information from the Curators that they inhabit about 5 worlds, each built with unimaginably advanced technology. Their capital world is named Core, with a moon orbiting it called the Periphery. Both are densely populated. The number of Rutharians in the galaxy are estimated to be at least 60 billion.
"From their shipyards and recent incidents, I would put the estimate of their fleet power at 300k units." A dumb measure, but it was the best they've got, he thought.
"Keep in mind that their capital ships consists of Battlecruisers, a totally different philosophy to our battleships. They are designed as carriers since their fighter-bombers are more durable than ours, and are capable of swarming tactics.
"The current League forces are as follows, at last count"
fleet league.png

"As the current situation unfolds, I would suggest that we put resources into defending the Othethi and Kel-Azaan space against Rutharian aggression, for that is where they are likely to strike next."
"I believe the Alari President has a plan"
Another set of murmurs amongst the delegates. The forces arrayed against the League seems staggering.
"The Alari President will now speak" As the Lavi spoke through its unique language, the translator sounded out a male Alari voice.
"Friends and allies, we have gathered here to meet a threat, a threat that hangs over us like the swords of Damocles. We must face it head on or perish. For years we have suffered under the yoke of the two great empire.. nay, remnants of past empires for too long. This is time to show them we deserve our space in the sun. I look to my colleague, Chancellor Bo-Gu of the Othethi Confederation, to tell you about the injustices his people have suffered under the arrogance of these Chimms and Rutharians, for daring to occupy the space they themselves desired. Various peaceful space faring vessels over the years destroyed, all without any note or apologies. All without even entering their space! The time has come to arm yourselves and defend what is rightfully yours! in unity there is strength!

"Cease your AI research and destroy all robots within your space, then swear fealty to us, your emperor, and you shall know peace".
ascendency.png

We have received this transmission from the Chimm overlord, dictating to us an ultimatum we have no intention of accepting. I know that all of you seated here have an economy that would fall apart the instant we did that. The Chimms are demanding our total surrender, and subsistence as a thrall species, forever losing our independence and chained to a corpse of a geriatric empire. Their times have passed, and our time is now! I say this not as bluster but we have devised an actual plan to end the threat from those empires once and for all.
22 years ago, as you have no doubt remembered, there was an incident in the galactic blackhole named Gargantua, that ended in an emergency that resulted in the pan-galactic mobilisation of fleets. I am now free to reveal to you part of the Alari discovery in that system..."

As the President went on, the delegates were astonished at the impossibility of the tales. Intergalactic travel, starforges, and the tunnel to another galaxy. They were not told of the personal adventures of the Alari involved, of course. If the stories of the starforge were true, perhaps they did have a chance in all of this.
"This is our latest weapons platform," he touched a button on the presentation remote. A gigantic warship appeared on the holoscreen, next to it a Shogun-class battleship shown for size comparison.
"We call this the Gargantua class dreadnought"
"We have investigated the weaponry of the ancients," he continued unabated. "They have the unique weakness of reliance on their tachyon lances, which delivers poor damage on shields. Behold"
As he clicked another button, the shields around the Alari-design dreadnought lit up in a haunting magenta shade, like luminescent scales of the dragon. "Our new psi-shields will absorb most of their fire"
"We have managed to include not 1 but 7 gigacannons on those dreadnoughts, having optimised our balance devices to combat accuracy issues. For each of their shot we will hit them with 7.
"And the hull strength is enhanced by Garanthium ore and Living metal, which will repair any structural damage in the battlefield. This reduces chances of the enemy ever destroying a single ship."
"Lastly, our ship is equipped with the Psi-drive. This will enable our fleets to catch up with the ancients, as regular wormhole travel will take too long and lose all strategic initiative for us."
"We stand to liberate the galaxy from the decadent forces of Chimms and Rutharians, and they shall be brought to justice of the 24th century!"
After some other inspirational speech, Red Shoot stopped at a high point. The questions would come later, no doubt. He didn't mention how many dreadnaughts he had on hand, deliberately.
The rest of the meeting evolved into pledges of war and taking up particular roles in the upcoming war in the heavens.

The Jogollwan PM reinstated his loyalties to the Alari Assembly, his continued support of the league, and the economic mobilisation to support the frontier nations (Othethis and Kel Azaans). The Jogollwans remain the most numerous species of the galaxy and their production potentials are considerable. No one mentioned the internal strife of Ogo since the PM stopped the slavery practise but that was not important.
The Kel Azaan felt the threat of the Rutharians more acutely than other nations, for its nation borders the arthropoids to the south. Although from the same phylum of the tree of life, this has brought them no joy.
Rutharians have been harassing Azaan ships for years, but they dared not retaliate. Now the Azaan PM spoke passionately about the past grievances and the time to settle old scores. They've been a proud warrior race once humbled, but with the allies and friends they would overcome their adversary. The Azaan Republic pledges 100% support to the war effort, mainly in sending fleets and armies in to Rutharian space. The logistics will be assisted by other nations, and they have pledged large amount of credits for support.
The Sintomoris also pledged to send battleships and cruisers in the upcoming war, as well as ground troops. They would also require assistance from the League on credits and basic supplies.
The Mandasuran Manufacturing Collectives are fanatically war like and pledged support for arm sales and shipbuilding, and sending its relatively small force as an axillary to win honor.
The Othethis are the nation most at risk of ancients aggression. They are very distrusting of the other races, even they stands to be crushed by both the Chimms to the north and the Rutharians to the west. However, years of playing cat and mouse gave the Othethis an excellent idea of their enemies' tactics and technologies, and they would serve to strike at the most opportune moment once the enemy showed a weakness. It requested assistance from the Alaris specifically seeing it as the most potent space force.
The Immuthorans will contribute mostly man and materiel to the coming war, as well as armies which it had an abundance of. It has to divert a force to check the Huskos Empire, which may once again use the opportunity to engage in some form of adventure.

As the events on Ogo unfolds, the ancients have activated their Titan shipyards, gearing up for war.

Talk talk talk.

A necessary adjunct for the war war war.

Back on Admiralty mainbase, Alpha Centauri system.
Admiral Falatir and Karba are sipping synth wine at a get-together involving all admirals ranked 3 and above. They are now old friends and as they say time heals all wounds. Their feelings for each other remain unabated yet complicated, been on and off again for the last 20 years. The dreaded admiral power union did not occur, for 200 is the new 20 as they say. Plenty of time to think about that later. Besides, Falatir's descendent's just went into the 6th generation lately, she is still adjusting to the extreme longevity of the species, as the Alari genome now repairs itself endlessly. Thanks to the research on the dragon egg and the genetic mastery of the scientists. Karba never got married and became somewhat eccentric with the capacity boosters making some personality changes.
"The man upstairs wanted the alliance members to bear the brunt of the campaign this time I've heard" Karba commented as other naval personnel moved about the room, enjoying themselves in the calm before the storm.
"Yes that is my impression as well. For too long have we shepherded the other nations of the League, defeating adversary after adversary, with nothing to show for it". Falatir agreed.
Surprised that she agreed with him on this thought, he teased "The press will have a fit if they hear this one, for now its all inter-nation cooperation and League unity."
"Well nothing is free in life, now that we are stronger, the others seem superfluous." She added. "We are now the top tier navy in the galaxy. This galaxy"
"What? no, I don't think the navy is that strong yet?" Karba was curious.
"They've got the Starforge working producing Alari ships." She said quietly.
"It can't be, I was there?" Karba was shocked. So soon?
Karba tried to remember the events. "I remembered that it produced Dark Alari vessels, automated machine vessels that we had no control of." Once turned on, it would exhaust the resources within a star system. It didn't make a strategic difference. They were still researching, unless they made a breakthrough recently.
"This handsome gentleman, I'm afraid your lady friend is correct." A deep voice interrupted his thought flow.
"Zarg, you wily old bastard! We didn't know you were here!" The two were happy at this coincidence, their old boss's sudden appearance.
"Shhh, I might be retired now, but I still have eyes in the Admiralty" He winked.
"It's a secret, we might need to find a place to talk"

Several minutes later...in a secluded space.
"...The new president is cunning, he thinks that with the starforge we don't need our allies anymore, but we can't outright leave, because that would cause a public backlash. So he had used the re-emergence of the "Fallen Empires" as an opportunity to test the mantle of our allies. They fight in the frontlines while we harvest the dividends. You guys heard of this?" With a flick of his hands he produced a hologram.
"the mineral zro!" Exclaimed Karba. "I've.. researched a bit into psionics" he explained to Falatir.
"Right, inhaled in quantity, it makes a psionic being stronger. Now where are all the zros in the galaxy?"
"Rutharian space, people. The bugs have it. Nobody else in the alliance know. The bugs use it extensively on their jump drives"

battleground 1.png

"So we get the alliance to fight the bugs, take their planets, and get the zro. Did I mention they also cut the engine cooling time of our psi-drives?"
This does seem like a plausible plan, Karba thought. They would get the other parties to fight and collect the zro afterwards. After all, no one else knew what it was. And they would not hesitate to sell it to the Alaris, trade imbalance being what it is. The Alari Assembly deals in strategic resources of all kinds, Satremene, Lythuric, Terraforming gases and liquids, Teldar, Yurantic crystals...
"And if our allies fail?" He asked innocently
"We go in ourselves. The young lads are all in. Bemalon, Ketrill, Unit M1D, Haghonon, that Listheim kid... we are now trained in dreadnoughts warfare."
"Ah, you men and dreadnoughts..." Falatir said ironically "Such heavy handedness, no sense of aesthetics whatsoever."
Karba thought about the new doctrine in space war. The dreadnoughts would form a solid formation with shields covering each other, converging on the target fleet. The fleet then started firing until one side became space dust. Quite bland, but effective. Like a pugilist. The hull strength of the dreadnought is 7 times that of a battleship. The shield strength is more than 10 times. There are seven gigacannons on each ship. It seemed the logical choice.
"How many ships?" That's what he's interested in. No one knows how big the Alari fleet is anymore, not even those commanding it, which is preposterous. People deserved to know.
Zarg raised three fingers.
"300"?
"guess again"
"no way, you are exaggerating."
"3 million?" Falatir hazarded a guess.
"No, I wish it was so, then we won't need to work again ever, 3000."
"How is it that we are able to hide those ships? " She spotted the flaw in his statement.
"Warp signatures. They never moved out of the Aeonflux system"
"How do we know the Rutharians don't have similar technology?"
"We don't." Zarg said. "Guess the Azaans and Othethis are going to find out for us".
As the night falls, the three part their ways and went back to presidium. Falatir and Karba are semi-retired now, second line admirals responsible for training a new generation. This is a policy that ensures there are no generational gap between the officer ranks, and that power does not perpetuate in the hands of a few. They are too decorated to serve on front lines and yet not ready to retire.

I think that is called live fire training :)

The Rutharians finally made their move. Now they dig their grave.

war ruth 1.png

Rutharian fleet quickly overran Kel-Azaan defenses and cut off the resource node from the capital

azaans psionics.png

As their capital world is under siege, the upset Azaans look to the beyond for their saviour. Many revealed to be latent psychics.

Admiral Falatir meanwhile had a dream... leading an enormous armada against the Rutharians in their home system.... was just a dream? or omen?
war in heavens.png

The relationships between the two fallen empires are not good. This could be an opportunity

stalemate.png

The war went into stalemate, as the Rutharians vastly underestimated Azaan and Othethi resilience. They've won every space battle but lacked the force to occupy the planets of the allies.

invader.png

As combat heated up in the northwest sector of the galaxy (2D projection), the GAC received a distress signal from Kongram, the Huskoid homeworld. What could possibly be happening there? Something major, with thousands of warp signals.

invaders 1.png

The Huskos formally asked for league assistance. The Immuthorans sent a fleet to investigate, as the ships gave a strange signal in their hails. They are hungry? for what?
From the Alari capital, the last message they got from the Kongram system was a hail of weapon fires

The creatures are of intergalactic origin, this should be interesting.

Oh just what the galaxy needs at this time.

All the crisises in one, eh? Or two so far, but I guess we'll see more.;)

azaans collapse.png

5 years into the war the Azaans are near collapse: the main forces of the League was attracted elsewhere to face a bigger threat. The interdimensional invaders had no mercy for the species of the Gaak Galaxy.

titans.png

Viceroy Malungord, the grand admiral of the 2nd Pelagic excursion, uses the sole Titan to the maximum advantage in the battles with the League
The capital world is still under siege, while a sister planet had already been taken by the Rutharians

siege azaans.png

The Alari is slow to mobilise in its war effort as the fleet it sent got tangled in the interdimensional invader's conflict, near the Othethis region of space.

Then, the bad news hit:
end of othethis.png

The extra-dimensional invaders broke through the defenseless planets and feasted on the living beings there. Entire biospheres were destroyed on those planets. The Alari may have to take the enemies seriously now.
othethis siege.png

As usual, a communique was published denouncing the barbarity of the invaders, and called for solidarity of the Gaak native nations.
