conquered colonies/peace treaties

I was under the impression that conquering an enemy colony would earn me two stars for the peace negotiations. Is this correct or do I only get stars for provinces with cities ?

I am asking because I just conquered a colony without getting anything, I couldn't even ask for a tribute. (And there had been no other battles.)

In my experience, you're correct is assuming provinces with only a trade post don't count in peace negotiations. Best bet is to just destroy ('brandschatzen') them after invading and immediately put up your own colony there.
