Greetings!

We’ve shown you plenty of map changes already, including updates to Russia, Scandinavia, and most recently Italy and the Alps. But surely, we couldn’t do all of these wonderful updates without looking at the continent that deserves it the most, right?

So let’s have a look at Africa.

You read that right. Africa is finally getting the love and attention it deserves! Northern Africa and Mali have long needed an update. Where counties resembled squares and rectangles more than anything else. But no more!

Let’s start with the northern kingdoms. The kingdoms themselves remain the same. Only Mauretania has been renamed to Maghreb, and has along with the kingdom of Africa been placed in the Empire of Maghreb. Mainly to break down the very large Arabian Empire slightly. On the county level, every single county has been repainted in order to place them where they should be and give the borders a much more natural feeling.

All in all, the new provinces and additional holding slots will make North Africa stronger than before. But to offer additional protection against aggressive Holy Wars from the major powers of Europe, we’ve increased the number of sea zones slightly in the mediterranean. The stronger realms of central Europe will now have to first conquer their way down to the coast of Iberia, Southern Italy, or go through Mallorca or Sardinia, before they will be able to reach the shores of Africa. This should give the realms in Africa some time before the Europeans attempt to make their way onto the continent.

As for Mali. The area has about twice the number of provinces compared to what they had before. This in turn allows for more than just the lonely kingdom of Mali to exist, which has been split into the three kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. One kingdom for each of the major powers that inhabited the area during the timeframe of the game. They’ll all still be part of the empire of Mali, which is finally no longer the only empire with a single De Jure kingdom.

Here is an overview of the De Jure kingdoms:

Updating the existing parts of the map is not the only thing we’ve done for Africa however. Kanem-Bornu and the region around lake Chad is now on the map as well! The area consists of the two kingdoms Hausaland and Kanem. These consist of three and four duchies respectively and together form the empire of Kanem-Bornu. So not only do we get new rulers and titles to play with, but it allows both east and west to move across the continent without always having to expand north and, usually, through a Muslim blob that more often than not forms in Northern Africa and Arabia. Instead, you’ll be able to cross Africa through Ghana/Mali in the west, through the Sahara and the Fezzan corridor in the center, and finally through Wadai and Abyssinia in the east.

Let’s not stop there though.

To make Africa more distinct from other regions, a second trade route has been added to the game; the Trans-Saharan Trade Route.

06_trade_route.png

It requires either Horse Lords or Jade Dragon to be unlocked and functions very much like the updated Silk Road from 2.8. There is however, a certain twist to it. The base value of the trade route is very low. Granting next to no bonuses to the counties it passes through. What you need to do in order to benefit from it, is to control certain locations along the trade route and construct unique production buildings in established trade posts. To be clear though, these are merely special buildings within the trade posts just like you would upgrade a trade post on the Silk Road. These buildings represent some of the trade goods that historically had a large impact on the trade in the region. The most important of these will be the Gold Mines.

08_gold_mine.png

There are two Gold Mines located on the map, both of them in the kingdom of Mali. The Gold Mines will allow Mali to amass great wealth. Just like they did historically. If you would prefer to do it differently and take the mines from them, conquering Africa will very much be worth the effort. Not only will Gold Mines greatly increase the value of the Trans-Saharan trade, it will also grant the owner a large bonus to the county’s income. There will also be some flavour events that can trigger for anyone owning them.

Remember that what I’ve shown here is still a work in progress and things may be subject to change. Now, let’s wrap up the dev diary with some smaller additions.

We’ve renamed the West African religion to simply “African”, as to not exclude the newly added region around lake Chad, and updated the Patron Deities accordingly. The religion will also get a new set of shields for displaying the CoAs on the map.

I hope that you look forward to these changes and the overall improvements for Africa!

Some nice Toto-ly new additions to Africa!

*Sorry, but someone had to make that pun....

finally
great rework of west africa
but will egypt be improve too
like eu4 coc

Egypt has received a slight update. Otherwise Egypt and East Africa has mostly received tweaks and adjustments to the province borders. So nothing as major as the rest of Africa. I might revisit it and make some smaller additions if there is time to do so.

Will the Malians be buffed so that the Catholics don't conquer them with constant holy wars by 1200s?

The increased number of provinces and holdings slots should be a significant buff all by itself. But as mentioned in the dev diary, the number of sea provinces have been increased in the Mediterranean, so that the Europeans won't be able to gain access to Africa as easily as before. This should give the realms more time to grow stronger.

Does it mean that interface is finally somewhat moddable? Does it mean we now can have Zunist with Indian or Mazdan interface, rather than "tribal european wood"?
Yes.

Can I ask for an de jure map for both the North African region and the Sub-Sahara region (county, duchy, kingdoms, empire)?

Would a generous Dev be kind enough to share what the De Jure Duchies look like now, throughout Africa?

EDIT: I'm not going to delete this post because that ninja was amazing and deserves to be recognized.

Will there be achievements tied the African religion and general area?

There will probably be at least one, but it's not quite decided on what yet.

Can I build unique building in these port provinces? If so, are they available for Merchant Republics?

Since they are coastal, Merchant Republics will be able to build a trade post in all of them. Non-merchant republic can currently build a trade post in Tripoli.

@Servancour
So having de jure maps with color coding (kingdoms being shades of the empire and duches being shades of the kingdoms) has been completely abandoned?
If yes why? (I think personally that it made things look clearer)

We haven't abandoned it. It's only the kingdoms that doesn't always match the empire title, but so does plenty of other kingdoms in the game already. Mainly to avoid having too many titles of the lower tier be of the same colors. Duchies still share the same base color as their parent kingdom, and counties of the duchy.

Wow! With all these new map expansions, this is looking to be even bigger than JD. I estimated 70-80 and that was before the Italy dev diary. How many new provinces total are we projected to get? I asked this in the Italy Dev Diary and never got a reply.

More than 4 times your estimate.

I don't know if this question was answered in a previous dev diary or not: Is there any chance you could allow reformed pagans (Aside from Zunists) to join the Hermetic Society?
Or perhaps create a separate, Pagan version? Maybe even refer to them as Druids, Witch Doctors, and Medicine Men (I know, the last one is Native American, but I hope you understand my point).

If you take the Astrology feature when reforming, you can join the Hermetic society.

You know with Epirus overhauled I can’t help but feel Albanians are gonna be added. Especially since Coptics after all these years have been added, I hope their in the byzantine group, and while were at it with the culture revolution going on with holy fury I hope the Alan’s are put in their own group or Iranian group.

I have to say, I am impressed how quickly people notice things. After seeing Servancour post the images, I figured it'd take ages before anyone would see Epirus, yet people noticed almost instantly, even though it is up in the corner.

Well I actually saw you talking about possibly adding a province to Epirus in the last dev diary so I automatically looked there on instinct but your right some people bullseyed it in seconds

I did? I have to admit, I can't even remember that  Here's a preview of what Greece looks like.

1. Will we still get access to elective, primogeniture and other succession laws beyond (elective) gavelkind and the new elder council after reformation or do they require certain natures or doctrines to be picked upon reformation?

2.1. Will pagans have more societies with HF beyond just devil cult and secret societies? And if so, will they be created after reformation or will they exist before it from the start?
2.2. And I was going to ask about the hermetic society too but that was already answered earlier in this dd. Which I think is a bit of a shame having it limited only to astrology doctrine. :(

3.1. Will there be different title names for pagan emperors (like high king, grand king or king of kings)? After all emperor, tsar and kaiser are derived from imperator and ceasar and were used for christian empires to signify some sort of continuity to christian Rome and so wouldn't make much sense for pagans.
3.2. A good solution could be a chance to create custom title names upon coronation, now that coronation is also a thing, no?

4. This is more of a suggestion than guestion but could/will the e_mali be called empire of Ghana if founder or ruler is of soninke culture? Seeing as how Ghana was the predecessor to Mali and soninke seems to be the dominant culture in k_ghana.

5.1. Can reformed pagans proselytize outside their realm ONLY if they pick the proselytizing nature when reforming?
5.2. Will there be other ways to get other rulers to mass convert than just proselytizing if you don't pick that nature?

6. Could there still be a chance for a third doctrine slot for reforming pagans? It could be something like an extra slot that becomes available after certain conditions are met like controlling all holy sites or 90-100 religion authority for a set amount of years or something specific for the picked nature or all combined. Because getting to pick only 2 out of what many have calculated/speculated to be around 20 is quite little.

7. Will there be a new northern (titular) empire seeing as how there are now four kingdoms for finno-ugric cultures, which is plenty, seeing as how now there are at least two new empires with just two kingdoms, namely kanem-bornu and maghreb?

I'll try to answer these as best I can.
1. Eldership is tied to the Ancestor Worship doctrine (think Sainthood for pagans). The others should be the same as they are at the moment, as far as I can recall.

2.1 Warrior Lodges.

3.1 No new names for Emperors, at least as far as I can recall at the moment.
3.2 Coronation is a thing, yes.

5.1 As I understood the feature, yes, that sounds about right.
5.2 Mass conversion is not tied to proselytizing, I believe.

6. No, it is balanced around 2, and the UI is set up to be for 2 Doctrines.

7.

So I guess the only way to mod it to have the features of more than two doctrines would be for the modder to add custom doctrines that are combinations of two or more doctrines?

That would work, yeah. We've already sort of done this, with the religion specific ones, so they could just make more doctrines similar to those.
