I know this is more a historical question than a purely game based question...but how feasible was the concept of Mussolini restoring the Roman Empire and presumably making himself its Emperor? Lets assume WWII went very well for Italy and they gained all the lands around the Mediterranean, with such wild success could/would Mussolini proclaim a new Roman Empire, or would that be too much and be seen as a farce? Could the fascists have wrested control of the army, traditionally loyal to the King, and deposed the monarchy to make a Mussolini dynasty?

Moreover a name of Augustus Mussolini makes little sense whatsoever. Benitus Mussolinus Caesar would make SOME sense name-wise or Augustus Mussolinus Caesar if he'd like to take the name of Augustus for the honor of the great Roman emperor.

Mussolini expressly wanted to rebuild the Roman Empire, in the usual fascist way of seeking an ancient national glory. The fasces, from whence the word fascism comes, was a symbol of Rome used by Mussolini to evoke this. And he expressly wanted to overthrow the monarchy of Italy, and eventually did so albeit at a time when the Allies were at his doorstep and the Italian Social Republic was little more than a Germany client state. So in the sense that this was a stated aim, which I'll point out seems to be the usual threshold for things happening in Axis victory scenarios, it has a fair bit of basis.

As far as what would have really happened if Italy had been ahistorically successful, we'll never really know. I speak somewhat flippantly of Axis victory alt-histories assuming any stated aim of the Axis powers would be implemented because even during the war many of Hitler's plans (such as the reorganisation of Germany's administrative regions) were scuppered by in-fighting or by traditions that even he could not overturn. So in that sense it's entirely possible that Mussolini would wear a laurel wreath and call himself Augustus and it would still be seen as a farce.

Well Augustus is a imperial title, just like Caesar was, so it does make sense for him to use it. During the time when Rome had 4 emperor's in the 4th century the 2 senior emperor's had the title Augustus while the junior emperor's had the somewhat lesser title of caesar.

They way I see it, before BBA Italy capturing all the territory required to form the Empire was already ridiculous, the game at that point is just patting you on the back and give you a bit more silly in your already silly scenario.

Or at least it was before BBA... Forming Rome now is far easier since you only need the Mediterranean coastline, still silly but theres an argument now I guess.
