I tried this previously. The dumb AI ruler decided to attempt to imprison someone in the faction, triggering the dissolution war with me in it.

If this happens to you you can just pursue the war to a white peace. Status quo will be maintained and the rebellious vassals went be able to join another faction for 10 years.
