OK, so here it is the smoothed English version of the AJFIFU events 19000-19012 (i.e. Bavaria).

First, three cheers to Ayestheni for doing so much of the work.

Second, I have tried to read through the ifu_bay.txt to see what triggers and effects these events have and indicated what they are in plain English.

Third, there are some further Bavarian events I'd like to add.

BAVARIA EVENTS (19000-19012)

================
19000

(triggered by not being at war with Francia & not vassal of Francia, range 787-790)

EVENTNAME19000; Liberty for Bavaria

EVENTHIST19000; For a long time, we have preserved our subordinate relationship to the Franks. But the aggressive behavior of the Franks towards Duchess Liutperga's family in Lombardy and Benevento has prompted her husband, our proud Duke Tassilo III, to collect all his courage and unilaterally dissolve our feudal ties to the Frankish king. As expected, the King of the Franks is not amused. The Pope too does not look kindly upon our behavior. A messenger has arrived from the Frankish king ordering Tassilo to appear immediately before an assembly at Worms. He makes it clear that it must be Tassilo himself, and not just some envoy, that must present himself. He warns us of grave consequences if our duke fails to fulfill his lawful lord's request, possibly a war?

EVENT19000A;I shall not go to Worms!
(= trigger Franks 15033 (Francia declares war))

EVENT19000B;Let me go to Worms.
(= trigger Franks 15037 (Bavaria turned vassal))

==================
19001

(Triggered by Franks 15032 (Franks declare war unilaterally) or Franks 15033 (Franks declare war in response to Bavaria's refusal to go to Worms))

EVENTNAME19001;War with the Franks
EVENTHIST19001;

Angered by his intrigues with the enemies of Francia, King Charles of the Franks ordered our Duke Tassilo to appear at Worms and explain himself. But the duke has failed to show up. What we all feared is now upon us. A messenger has just brought us a declaration of war from King Charles. There is now only one way to save Bavaria -- protect our core provinces as best as we can. Should the Franks seize them, they might be succeed in turning the Bavarian nobility against our brave duke. Oh, we fear a terrible end for our beloved country!

EVENT1; "OK"
(= no consequence)

===================

19002

(triggered by loss of Bavarian control over Ansbach, Bayern, Tyrol & Salzburg; deathdate 800).

EVENTNAME19002; Bavaria defeated
EVENTHIST19002;

EVENTHIST19002; After the Franks conquered Bavarian lands, the Bavarian nobles turned their backs on their rebellious Duke Tassilo III. The Franks reminded the barons of their oaths of loyalty to King Charles. When the abandoned, humbled Tassilo appeared at the Frankish assembly at Ingelheim, he was immediately arrested on account of his intrigues with the Avars and Saxon rebels. He was also cited for his proceedings against royal vassals in Bavaria, barons who were directly bound by oath to the Frankish king. Brought before trial at the assembly, Tassilo was found guilty of treason and condemned to death. But in a last-minute gesture of clemency, King Charles spared his life. Tassilo and his family were shorn and banished to a monastery to live out their days.

Most of the Bavarian nobility seem to accept that the duchy is finished and that Bavaria is destined to be nothing more than just another province in the Frankish realm. We stand little chance of success if we choose to fight on for independence. But perhaps we can preserve Bavaria's existence by petitioning the Frankish king to take us as vassals?

EVENT19002A; Let us become part of the Frankish realm
(= trigger Franks 15034)

EVENT19002B; We will fight to the bitter end!
(= trigger Franks 15035)

EVENT19002C; Ask for a vassalship.
(= trigger Franks 15036)

====================

19003

(triggered by vassalship & not 19000; date range 781-82)

EVENTNAME19003; The feudal oath

EVENTHIST19003; In 781, Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria traveled to Rome to consult with Pope Adrian I. Among the things discussed were the Duke of Bavaria's feudal oath to the Frankish monarch. This oath -- the first recorded instance of a feudal oath in Europe -- had been originally sworn in 757 by the Bavarian duke to King Pepin III of the Franks. It asserted that the Duke of Bavaria held his duchy in fief to the Frankish monarch. But it had never been renewed with his successors. The new King Charles now demands feudal homage, which is why Tassilo turned to Rome. Might the Pope relinquish him of this strange arrangement and confirm his holding of Bavaria by his own right? Alas, despite the Pope Adrian I's good relationship with the Bavarian duke (e.g. the Pope had baptized Tassilo's son Theodo), the Pope knows which side his bread is buttered on. He recommends that Tassilo renew the feudal homage to Charles. Tassilo must now decide whether to follow the Pope's advice or make his lonely bid for independence.

EVENT19003A;Renew the feudal oath
(= seems to worsen relations with Franks?)

EVENT19003B;Terminate this vassalship.
(= break vassalship, tiggers Franks 15033)

===================

19004

(no event)

===================

Note: Next few events (19005 to 19008) are all basically the same (response to East Franks conversion into Regnum Teutonicorum). The only difference seems to be the trigger, which depends on the degree of aristocracy that East Franks have. The less aristocracy, the less money the duke of Bavaria gets).

===================
19005

(triggered by East Franks 24010B (convert to Regnum, high aristocracy)

EVENTNAME19005_9; The Enemy within the Realm

EVENTHIST19005; The king doesn't seem prepared to accept the fact that the great dukes are to be the actual rulers of this kingdom. He seeks to regain his powers back by force. The fool does not have a breath of a chance against the united duchies!

EVENT19005A;Victory will be ours!
(= breaks vassalship with Regnum; improve ties with Lorraine, Swabia & Friesland, lots of cash)

===================
19006

(triggered by East Franks 24011B (convert to Regnum (medium aristocracy))

EVENTNAME19005_9; The Enemy within the Realm

EVENTHIST19006; The king doesn't seem prepared to accept the fact that the great dukes are to be the actual rulers of this kingdom. He seeks to regain his powers back by force. If the duchies all hold together, we have a good chance against him.

EVENT19006A;We can do it!
(= breaks vassalship with Regnum; improve ties with Lorraine, Swabia and Friesland; less cash than before)

===================
19007

(triggered by East Franks 24012B (convert to Regnum, low aristorcracy)

EVENTNAME19005_9; The Enemy within the Realm

EVENTHIST19007; The king doesn't seem prepared to accept the fact that the great dukes have become so powerful. He seeks to cut our power down by force. Only if all the duchies hold together will we have a chance against him.

EVENT19007A; God help us.
(= breaks vassalship with Regnum; improve ties with Lorraine, Swabia and Friesland; little cash)

=======================

19008

(triggered by East Franks 24013B (convert to Regnum, zero aristocracy)

EVENTNAME19005_9; The Enemy within the Realm

EVENTHIST19008; The king doesn't seem prepared to recognize the great dukes at all. He seeks to cut down what little power we have by force of arms. We have no chance against him, but if all the duchies hold together, a miracle may yet happen.

EVENT19008A; We are as good as lost.
(= breaks vassalship with Regnum; improve ties with Lorraine, Swabia and Friesland; very little cash)

==========================

19009

(Triggered by Saxons (29002-29005 (Saxons break with Regnum)), but not Saxon (29006, Saxon leadership of ducal alliance, date November, 911).

EVENTNAME19005_9; The Enemy within the Realm

EVENTHIST19009;The great dukes are united in a strong alliance under the guidance of Bavaria. It is time to cut the king down to size!

EVENT19009A;We have no other choice!
(= alliance with Lorraine, Friesland and Swabia; war against Regnum).

=====================

(Trigger, existence of Franconia, begin date 913)

EVENTNAME19010;Open confrontation

EVENTHIST19010; Because Conrad I of Franconia, the putative King of Germany, was not of Carolingian blood, the great dukes felt their oaths of loyalty did not bind them to him. They regarded themselves as sovereigns in their own right, issuing their own laws, appointing their own bishops and minting their own coins. Furthermore, if Conrad could claim the kingship, then so could any of them. Flush from his victories over the Magyars, Duke Arnulf the Bad of Bavaria feels he has more right to that title than Conrad.

EVENT19010A; Yes, let us challenge Conrad.
(= break vassalship with Franconia, war with Franconia, addcores for Germany).

EVENT19010B; No, Conrad is the king.
(= relation improve)

=====================

19011

(Needs 19010, triggered by date 921)

EVENTNAME19011; Ascension of Henry the Fowler

EVENTHIST19011; Just before he died, Conrad surprisingly recommended that the nobles of Germany elect his old antagonist, Duke Henry the Fowler of Saxony, to succeed him as German king. As a former champion of ducal sovereignty, the new King Henry I stayed true to his colors and promised to confirm the sovereign privileges of the great dukes, in return for their recognition of his kingship. But our ambitious Duke Arnulf the Bad of Bavaria has aspirations for the royal throne himself. Shall we recognize Henry or press our own claims to the kingship?

EVENT19011A; Henry the Fowler is our king!
(= remove German cores)

EVENT19011B;No, our Arnulf is the true king!
(= triggers Saxony 29010)

=====================
19012

(Trigger by date, 10 August, 955)

EVENTNAME19012;The Battle of Lechfeld

EVENTHIST19012; For several decades, the heathen Magyars have raided the plains of Germany and Italy with brutal effectiveness, earning them a fearful reputation. .In August 955, a united German army under King Otto I gained a decisive victory over the Magyars on a field by the Lech river (near Augbsurg). The Magyars had been induced to invade Bavaria the previous year by Duke Liudolf of Swabia, the estranged son of Otto who was then leading a rebellion of German nobles against his father. The Magyars expected to encounter a divided and weakened opponent. But Otto made effective use of religious propaganda. He got the German nobility to abandon their rebellion and line up behind him in order to expel the enemies of God and Christianity from German soil. Abandoned by his confederates, duke Liudolf of Swabia submitted in December, 954. Otto's victory at Lechfeld is hailed not only for marking the end of the Magyar threat to Christian Europe, but also as the beginning of of German national feeling. The battle of Lechfeld was followed up immediately by a victory at Recknitz over the Slavs on the Elbe, who had joined in the fray. Otto's two victories opened the door to German eastward expansion, the Drang nach osten.

EVENT1; "OK"
