Introduction
Well during my vacation I considered writing a more plot driven AAR based on a possible “what if scenario”. The choice fell on the Teutonic Order and the scenario is “What if the Teutonic order had moved back to the Orient as many suggested after the defeat at Tannenberg”?
Actually many suggested that the order should move back to the Orient to become a land -based complement to the Hospital in the struggle against the Ottomans when the order had played out its role up in the north so it is not a pure fantasy scenario. Well I will give it a try but the story will show if the relocation actually will take place because that depends on certain factors. Different opinions exist within the order and there will be an internal struggle for power, as you will see.
I think you will find this AAR vastly different from my others. The main characters are the same as in my contribution in Sasha´s great AAR “Mat of the eagle” so you might recognize the Judge and Miss Hoover here though this story is quite another.
I will play on very hard/normal on v 1,07 (update when new patches are out) and not allow any cheat whatsoever (no reload except if I have a crash). Before I start I will give you a short historical background.
Historical background until 1410 –Teutonic Order
(source Catholic Encyclopedia)
A medieval military order modelled on the Hospitallers of St. John, which changed its residence as often as the latter. These residences, marking as many stages in its development, are: (1) Accon (Acre), its cradle in Palestine (1190-1309); (2) Marienburg, Prussia, the centre of its temporal domination as a military principality (1309-1525); (3) Mergentheim in Franconia, which inherited its diminished possessions after the loss of Prussia (1524-1805); (4) finally, Vienna in Austria, where the order has gathered the remains of its revenues and survives as a purely hospital order.
(1) There was already a Teutonic hospital for pilgrims from Germany in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, with a church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, who is still the patroness of the order and after whom the name Mariani is sometimes given to its members.
But this establishment, which was under the jurisdiction of the Grand Master of St. John, was broken up at the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin (1187). During the Third Crusade German pilgrims from Bremen and Lübeck with the Duke of Holstein established a temporary hospital under the besieged walls of Acre; this was a large tent, constructed from the sails of their ships, in which the sick of their country were received (1190).
After the capture of Acre this hospital was permanently established in the city with the co-operation of Frederick of Suabia, leader of the German crusade, and at the same time religious knights were attached to it for the defence of pilgrims. The Order of Teutonic Knights was founded and took its place beside the other two orders of Jerusalem, the Hospitallers and the Templars. As early as 1192 they were endowed by Celestine III with the same privileges as the Order of St. John, whose hospital rule they adopted, and as the Order of the Temple, from which they borrowed their military organization.
Innocent III in 1205 granted them the use of the white habit with a black cross. The emperors of the House of Suabia heaped favours upon them. Moreover, they took sides with Frederick II even after he had broken with the papacy and in opposition to the other two military orders. During the Fourth Crusade, when the gates of Jerusalem were for the last time opened to Christians, under the command of this emperor, the Teutonic Knights were able to take possession of their first house, St. Mary of the Germans (1229). But it was not for long and before the end of the century they left Palestine, which had again fallen under the yoke of Islam (1291).
(2) A new career was already open to their warlike and religious zeal, in Eastern Europe, against the pagans of Prussia. This coast of the Baltic, difficult of access, had hitherto resisted the efforts of the missionaries, many of whom had there laid down their lives. To avenge these Christians a crusade had been preached; a military order founded with this object, the Sword-bearers had not been very successful, when a Polish duke, Conrad of Massovia, determined to ask the assistance of the Teutonic Knights, offering them in return the territory of Culm with whatever they could wrest from the infidels.
Hermann of Salza, fourth Grand Master of the order, was authorized to make this change by Honorius III and the Emperor Frederick II, who, moreover, raised him to the rank of prince of the empire (1230). The knight Hermann Balk, appointed Provincial of Prussia, with twenty-eight of his brother knights and a whole army of crusaders from Germany began this struggle which lasted twenty-five years and was followed by colonization.
Owing to the privileges assured to German colonists, new towns arose on all sides and eventually Germanized a country of which the natives belonged to the Letto-Slavic race. Thenceforth the history of this military principality is identified with that of Prussia (q.v.). In 1309 the fifteenth Grand Master, Sigfried of Feuchtwangen, transferred his residence from Venice, where at that time the knights had their chief house, to the Castle of Marienburg, which they made a formidable fortress.
The number of knights never exceeded a thousand, but the whole country was organized in a military manner, and with the constant arrival of new crusaders the order was able to hold its own among its neighbours, especially the inhabitants of Lithuania, who were of the same race as the natives of Prussia and, like them, pagans. In the battle of Rudau (1307) the Lithuanians were driven back, and they were converted only some years later, with their grand duke, Jagellon, who embraced Christianity when he married the heiress of the Kingdom of Poland (1386).
With this event, which put an end to paganism in that section of Europe, the Teutonic Knights lost their raison d'être. Thenceforth their history consists of incessant conflicts with the kings of Poland. Jagellon inflicted on them the defeat of Tannenberg (1410), which cost them 600 knights and ruined their finances, in order to repair which the order was obliged to have recourse to exactions, which aroused the native nobility and the towns and provided the Poles with an opportunity to interfere against the order.
Tomorrow “the Story”
- Der Deutsche Orden the Teutonic order of Holy Mary in Jerusalem
CHARACTERS (still alive)
- Miss Hoover AKA Big Sister She has a body too magnificent to describe in simple words. Miss Hoover is a young beautiful girl with long slender delicious legs, deep blue eyes, large breasts and curly hair. Her eyes seem to be synchronized with her lips in a constant search for love and power. Originally she was a poor girl that accompanied a knight on a crusade (reisen) against infidels in Lithuania but when the knight died she started her own business at “Haus Hoover”. By manoeuvring murdering and using her lips in an excellent way she has become Big Sister in the Ordenstaat and are attempting to take control over the Order through her party and the thought police. After the death of the Black Dwarf who tried to challenge her as leader she has united the party again. To be able to wipe out the Black Dwarf she had to turn to the Pope who has a certain degree of influence over the order after his intervention. She also had to establish a Modus Vivendi with the Judge to keep the power allowing him to control the army. At the moment she - after getting that advice from the Pope - has a plan of making up with the Judge and create a truly united order again.
- The Judge Formerly in the service of the Swedish royal family now a renegade. A rather large man with a thick neck and a coarse brutal face. In spite of his appearance he has a certain charm, in some way curiously civilized and amusing. Most women find him immensely handsome and attractive. He is a passionate dreamer and visualizes the liberation of the Holy Land from Moslem oppression. In the beginning he was entrusted with the reorganization of the order to prepare a crusade later on. The Judge is rather chaste person and a great warrior. He was married to Miss Hoover but divorced her when he found out about the party. He cut a deal with the Pope that guarantees Miss Hoover the leadership of the order while he keeps control of the army. Once it seemed that he would marry Erika Blow but that is not likely anymore or? The Judge led a crusade against the Mameluks and captured Jerusalem. He seriously wounded Ahmed who has sworn to avenge the defeat.
- Messalina Beaver An old friend to Miss Hoover that worked together with her at Haus Hoover before they became rivals. Messalina has long red hair, beautiful green eyes and freckles and her body is absolutely magnificent. Above all she hates intellectuals and thinks that stripping, sucking, dancing is as important as writing. Her main hate objects are the semi intellectual Mr Taskenspieller who´s arse she had hoped to suspend on a stake after being deeply humiliated by him once (She missed that opportunity because Miss Hoover whacked him instead) and the other hate object was the arrogant Danish writer Skjern who she keeps as her slave and plaything. She was married to Dick but does not love him (she loves his castle though). Usually she has a randy smile on her lips and after being pressed against the wall by Ahmed she has become attached to him in open opposition to Miss Hoover. She now spends her time in Constantinople with Ahmed waiting for a chance to get even with Miss Hoover and the Judge.
- Ahmed : Ahmed is very tall Arab with a coarse face and watchful eyes. He is a double nature, sometimes he can be kind, warm and understanding but sometimes he can be violent, cruel and ruthless. He is a brilliant murderer and undercover agent well equipped and often acting like a rollicking bull when women are present. He has been banging both miss Hoover and Messalina Beaver though he hates Miss Hoover. Ahmed initiated a more serious affair with Messalina Beaver and he pretended to be the latrine man to fool Dick Passau who was married to Messalina Beaver. Later he helped Messalina Beaver to kill Dick. Then he led the Moslems in the war against the order but was seriously wounded by the Judge. He is now preparing to take back the Holy land.
- Erika Blow Erika Blow is an innocent girl brought to Marienburg as a gift from Pommern. She resembles an angel, a blond attractive girl with fantastic breasts and delicious legs. Miss Hoover arrested her and brought her to the Ministry of Love when she found her naked in the Grand Master´s bed because Miss Hoover was afraid that Erika would become a new Shootergirl and gain influence through the Grand Master. During the interrogations in the Ministry of Love Erika Blow almost became a physical necessity for Miss Hoover because her resistance to the evil that Big Sister and the party represent. This resistance was too unbearable to be tolerated and yet it was too noble to neglect. Secretly Miss Hoover wanted Erika to love her. Before he was killed the Black Dwarf helped Erika to escape. While on the run she met the Judge and it seemed that they would become a pair. However being a lustful girl Erika met a French agent and went to bed with him. The agent convinced her to go to Paris where she met the king Henri III and fooled around with him and Cristina - , La Chica in a ménage a trois despite having promised the Judge to wait for him after his crusade. Henri III was killed in the war against the Order and Erika fled to the generous old nobleman Lord Hamdur where she is right now trying to get her hands on his gold.
- Adolf Heinrich : We don’t know much about him really. The Black Dwarf (see below) found Adolf deep inside a dark forest in Bavaria when Adolf was very young and gave him a secret potion that gives him eternal life. Adolf Heinrich is callous and cruel and obeys Miss Hoover without hesitation (at least until the Black Dwarf entered the scene). He organized the set-up that got the Shootergirl arrested and killed her on Miss Hoover´s command. Adolf is the head of the Ministry of Love. For a while it seemed that he was going to get outmanoeuvred by Fawkes Squealer but after the fall of Fawkes Adolf seems to be in a pole position.
- Mehmet : A dark man with an impressing belly from the Ottoman Empire. He is ambassador in Vienna. Mehmet´s mission was to stop a coming crusade and to achieve that he employed Ahmed.
- Fawkes Squealer was earlier involved in an organization called Dead Sophists Society dedicated to overthrow the Ordenstaat. When he was arrested he had a short time ago composed a book “The Theory and Practice of Sophist Collectivism”. Miss Hoover had read it and found it absolutely thrilling. It described the truth in the world seen from a sophist point of view and encouraged a viewpoint that all things was relative and that of all things the measure is man. Miss Hoover ordered that Fawkes Squealer should be released and together they adjusted the book to fit in to the official party doctrine Ingsoc, “the survival of the fittest” which ultimately was what the Sophist ideas was about in Fawkes Squealers version. Later the book was renamed “The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism” and Miss Hoover declared that it contained all the truth that Ingsoc, the official philosophy of the party, embraced. Fawkes Squealer was appointed as chief prosecutor in the Ordenstaat in recognition of his work. By many seen as no 2 in the party. Fawkes was also busy being lover to Miss Hoover before he insulted her and the Pope. Miss Hoover whipped him in public for his behaviour, had him arrested and locked up in the Ministry of Love.
- The Pope The Holy See is trying to influence the order and has been promised that the Order will fight Protestants and infidels. Moreover Miss Hoover has promised to colonise the New World and turn it into a Catholic domain. The Holy See has a very important function as negotiatior between the army led by the Judge and the party led by Miss Hoover. The Black Dwarf was killed after Papal intervention.
- Lord Hamdur An old nobleman, Duke of Champagne, who hates the order but loves a collaborative writing project about French history. He has been interested in Erika but when she turned to him for protection he has been treating her like a daughter.
CHARACTERS -- Deceased or vaporized
- The Shootergirl : She was known for her delicious arse that she used to move around as a ball in a pinball game. She was a cheerful, very well trained girl with bright blue eyes. Her arse was probably by far the best in Europe. The Shootergirl became a very dangerous rival to Miss Hoover and controlled the Ordenstaat through the Grand Master for a while. She urged the Grand Master to get rid off Miss Hoover but Miss Hoover tricked her into a trap and later Adolf Heinrich executed her at the Castle of Marienburg.
- Mr Taskenspieller AKA “the brute” He was a Norwegian citizen. He studied law in Oslo together with the Judge though Mr Taskenspieller did not become the most brilliant student. Instead Mr Taskenspieller became a contract killer. Taskenspieller was very tall with watchful eyes and cruel lips. He was a simple man yet an expert in his field, a brilliant murderer and undercover agent. He and Messalina Beaver began to hate each other because he thought that she was a cheap slut while she thought that he was semi-intellectual bastard. He was killed on Miss Hoover´s command when he participated in a conspiracy against Miss Hoover together with Dick.
- Sir Carlsberg AKA “the straw”: A terrible Danish warrior who greatly opposed the Ordenstaat and wanted Denmark to become the major power in the Baltic region. He was badly injured by the Judge in their first face-off leaving his face full of ugly scares and because of this wound he was only able to eat through a straw. Later he killed Dick Passau´s younger brother with his lance but met his own destiny on the battle-field when the Judge cut off his head and kicked it away in a long bow. Amazingly sir Carlsberg´s body was still in function and like a beheaded chicken the Dane staggered in front of his perplexed comrades before the Judge struck a blow with his sword that cut his body in two halves.
- Skjern AKA “the Dane” : A famous Danish writer who mostly writes narrative stories about the war (kind of After Action Reports). He was Messalina Beaver´s slave and was required to go around naked in her house to please her because she loves to humiliate and whip him since he is a scholar. Later Miss Hoover enlisted him as an agent within the Thought Police and in return he helped Miss Hoover to ensnare the Shootergirl. Later, when Messalina found out that he was spying on her he was killed and got his thing cut off by her.
- The Black Dwarf : A small man who seemed not to belong to this world, a hideous dwarf. His head was of full human size, forming a frightful contrast with his height and he is dressed in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour. His face was strong and curved with an expressionless air. His eyebrows were massive, almost meeting over the nose. The mouth was fixed and rather cruel-looking, with peculiar sharp, white teeth and his limbs seemed of great strength. He was from Bavaria where he had lived in a deep forest. Possibly he was not a human. He created an inner party and tried to crush Big Sister´s power. However in the turmoil following the "Faith of the order" he was outsmarted by the Pope who convinced Adolf Heinrich to betray and kill him using Bavarian silver, the only thing that could kill the Black Dwarf. Eventually he ended up in a stinking lake dead as a piece of shit in the street as Fawkes Squealer said.
- Dick Passau AKA “tiny Dick” . He was a knight, a bit undersized and pathetic and was practically raped by Messalina Beaver the first time they met. After that little incident they got married and live together at Dick´s castle “Joyeuse Garde”. Messalina was not pleased with Dick and has a secret affair going with Ahmed. Dick was the Judge´s Camp de Aide and at one point he began to conspire with Mr Taskenspieller and the king of Brandenburg to get rid of Miss Hoover. The coup d´ Etat failed and Dick ended up in room 101 in the Ministry of Love. He was brainwashed and developed a deep affection for Miss Hoover finally loving her as Big Sister. He began to spy on the Judge but when the Black Dwarf released Erika Blow (to create problems for Miss Hoover) she informed the Grand Master that he was on the pay list of the party. The Judge then finished him off.
- Cristina AKA La Chicha . A young dark beauty originally love slave to Henri III but also a spy paid by Miss Hoover. She was involved in a ménage a trois with Erika and King Henri III. Then she opposed Big Sister and got raped and killed. Her head was sent to Paris.
- Henri III The young ambitious king of France that tried to challenge the order by starting a war. He banged Erika and had plans for her but he then lost the war against the order and was killed in action.
