Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

This change is good for the overwhelming majority of players. Game forums always have an overpresentation of hardcore player and an underpresentation of casual players, yet does even a majority of this community support these changes.

Can we please get a World Conquest achievement? I understand that's perhaps not the goal of the game, but I think it's what gave EU4, HOI4, and IR so much replayability, trying to find the best start and strategy, and understanding the game mechanics enough to do WC, and getting an achievement for it.

Thank you. Setting achievements free is a huge improvement over the previous player-hostile policy, and I'm delighted to see it.

I look forward to being able to play with all my little mods to change localisation, increase immersion, and tweak the game to my tastes without missing out.

A mechanical note: please also let mods disable achievements when not appropriate (e.g. a different start date that may satisfy some of these on day 1).
Don’t call it player hostile jeez. Apparently wanting achievements to… be achievements, is “player hostile” now.

Those who want to do it the old way, can turn on ironman and play for achievements and know that they achieved it the way they wanted. Why are we particular to needing two sets of achievements for this unless it is merely for bragging rights over those who got the achievements the other way?

Were not instituting two code systems for a solution that already exists in the way that is feasible as the game current stands.
I've worded that badly. I mean one set of achievements, with each achievement in their twice, with different unlock conditions. I assume a different backend name for it, player facing, I'd append ironman to the start or end of the name.

I'll be honest, I don't get many achievements in paradox games as I often play modded. On one hand, this change is good for me. but on the other hand, i do like knowing everyone with the achievement earned it under the same conditions.

I think gaining achievements modded is a great idea, and It will probably make me do things in game i normally wouldn't.

Once i have those achievements though, there comes the question to myself, "Can I get that same achievement in an unmodded state?"

Given that, I can see having a modded and unmodded version being good for my, and I would assume at least some others, engagement with the game as I would have more targets to aim for, under different conditions.

If we only get what you've suggested, that would be fine, but i'd prefer what i'm suggesting.

Edit - i'd point out people who do it as you suggest here would mean they would need to be careful if playing modded, so they didn't get achievements. maybe an in game toggle to disable that game from getting achievements?

Also, to further prove the "but the cheaters!" argument is BS, here is a video from YouTuber PotatoMcWhiskey. It is about "cheating" to get certain achievements in Civ6 by winning on turn 1 from good RNG. One specific achievement he singles out is "Splitting the Atom." which requires to start a game in the Atomic Era and win. In his video the achievement percentage is 0.8% and on Steam it is currently. . . . 0.9%! Literally all you have to do get it is start a game, play one turn and get some good RNG and the number changed by just 0.1%! 125,000 people have watched that video and the number barely even changed. People aren't cheating, legitimately or otherwise, to get achievements. Its a non-issue.
Paradox games have an actual community built around achievements and their difficulty, unlike Civ 6 or most games frankly. This is harpooning it.

Nothing has ruined my experience of playing CK 3 than having to turn off something almost completely cosmetic, and certainly not overpowered or cheat-y, as the community flavor pack and ethnicities & portraits expanded. In the absence of an intricate system that can separate cosmetic elements and flavor from cheating, it is better this way as far as I'm concerned. Just adding my own 2 cents.
Fair. But then we’re basically patting paradix on the back for harpooning achievements… as opposed to fixing their checksum system, which is the real issue.

The difficulty hasn't been removed, ironman is still there for that community - you can still brag to each other and post about getting achievements on ironman.
What you cannot do is lord that over others easily by statistics, but you weren't doing that, those communities were built around achievements and their difficulty - which is still there.

So what? Only a third of the people who've played CK3 have the marriage achievement and its only achievement with higher than 30% a completion rate. Only 24 out of the 97 achievements have a double digit completion rate. People do not care about achievement hunting. The devs made the choice they felt served the entire playerbase the best. Achievements are a fun reminder of the things you've done in a game and they should be available to everyone on that basis alone. And guess what? You can still play only Iron Man games to get achievement if you want to, on one is going to stop you from doing so. If you think they lose their value because people don't have to play a restricted mode to get them that's your problem and nobody else's.

Give us a toggle at game start, to disable achievements. that way people can gain them in ironman, but still play modded without fear of getting some.

Is that easily doable? Or are there technical barriers?

As I said in the first quote string it was a good idea and I would follow-up on it. I cannot answer the technical side but I don't think its too hard in concept, but then I'm not a coder. It might already exist and I'm just blind, I don't have the game installed on my home PC for work/life balance reasons.

Its soon to be up there with "just fix ai" for me.
well to be fair, if you just fixed the ai you wouldn't hear that so often lol

Sorry, what you should really do on this is offer people some training on the ai code, and tell them you'll pay them if they fix it.

I suspect complaints would subside. Either that or some sorcerer would actually manage it, and you'd be happy to pay lol

Will you show backgrounds, avatars and emoticons for Steam?
