HoI4 DevDiary: No Step Back Achievements

Hello, and welcome back to another Dev Diary for Hearts of Iron 4. As we close in on wrapping up this major operation, code-named Barbarossa, before winter falls (the first snow fell in Stockholm this weekend, I am sure it’ll be fine), today we will talk about the new achievements that will be added with the release of No Step Back.

As far as the process is concerned, we usually have an open list of achievement suggestions during the whole DLC development cycle. Near the end of the cycle, we take a vote on what achievements we want to see in the game (after eliminating any that would be technically impossible) and start the process of implementing them and ordering art.

For No Step Back, we started with a list of 49 suggestions, and whittled it down to 20 Achievements:

@Archangel85 Given how different the wording of the achievements and the actual requirements to get them usually are, I need to ask some clarification questions:

1) Have you guys tested and obtained these achievements yourselves? I just want to make sure we are not going to have a similar sh*tshow to "Putting the band back together" (which, to this day, is still broken) with the "Habsburgs everywhere"

2) For "No more partitions": What does it mean "they don't exist"? Does that mean that if you defeat both, but some random Allied nation puppets them in 1 province, they exist, and therefore you also have to defeat the entire Allies? What if the Yalta conference happens and you get 2 (sometimes 3) Germanys. Do they count towards this "exist" requirement?

3) For "Not a step back": does not losing any core territory include other factions in a civil war? Also, what does exactly mean "1 core territory"? Does it mean losing control of an entire core state, or a single province?

4) For "The soviet onion": does it count if those puppets are countries you have released? Or do you also have to own all the starting territory? Is a particular leader/political path required to get it?

5) For "The Romanovs laugh last": can you please specify what "conquer" means? Is it own all their cores? Or is it like the Finland achievement was initially where none of that matters and the only thing needed is to be first in warscore when they capitulate? Because those 2 things are entirely different. Same question applies for "We don't really like statistics"

Augh, I was really hoping for one to the effect of:

It's Lonely at the Top
As the Soviet Union under Stalin, capitulate Germany after purging every official in your government.

I have problems with this Estonian achievement. First and foremost, Estonia in Estonian is written "Eesti", not "Esti". Secondly, being "Scandinavian" has never been in Estonia's agenda, being "Nordic" however, has. Lastly, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands are NOT Scandinavian. Being a Swedish company, one would expect you to know this stuff, but even at that, all that could've been discovered with 5 minutes of Googling. Of course you lot are human, and it is a human error to make, but you really should fix those major oversights.

1) Yes, it is part of acceptance testing.
2) A country ceases to exist if they are no longer present on the map after a peacedeal. So a single state puppet does count as existing.
3) Losing control over a core state, so you can lose individual provinces
4) It checks that every country on your borders is a puppet. So released puppets does count, but it won't be enough to get you all the way there.
5) You, or a puppet, need to control their capital state

If you name the achievement "Crusader Kings III", then you should rename the achievement "Crusader Kings 2" with Roman numerals. Well, or at the very least the "third part" on Arabic numerals.

hardest acheivements in my opinion :

This is going to be LIT: As Lithuania, hold the capitals of all of your neighbours : you would have to take on the soviets im guessing

No more Partitions: As Poland, be independent and ensure that both Germany and the USSR are either in your faction or don’t exist, you would have to beat germany and soviets

Around Eurasia in 80 days: Have a railroad from Gibraltar to Singapore , this is more of a time problem
What about the Tannu Tuva one?

CKIII is kinda meh, it's just CK1.

Should have been:

"As Poland, crown a monarch and get into a war with Turkey with Varna belonging to either side (or just Turkey that owns Varna)."

as a homage to the other "Crusade" familiar to the other neighbor game

Lithuania doesn’t border the Soviet Union at the start of the game, only Poland, Latvia, and Germany, so it shouldn’t be as difficult as you think it is.

Habsburgs. Habsburgs everywhere: As Poland, install a Habsburg monarch and be in a faction with another Habsburg monarch.
PLEASE don't be a "Putting the band back together" scenario.

By "my faction" does this mean any faction that Poland is in (Axis/Comintern) or Poland as faction leader?

The Romanovs laugh last: Restore the Romanovs to the throne and conquer Germany, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia,Turkey, and Bulgaria.
Considering all the hurdles of putting the Romanovs in power, this might be a tough delayed world conquest...

Feels like defending a building wonder in Age of Empires, but this time building a railroad while defending against Allied naval invasions.

Oh no...

Yep, the more correct name for this impossible achievement would be something like "Eesti is Nordi Lordi" etc.

Also: I have double-checked and "It has my name on it" only requires control, not ownership of the relevant states. In general we have started to move away from requiring ownership since, as people have mentioned, it is just tedious. In some cases control by a puppet is also accepted.
About that: have you considered changing formable nations to let puppets count for the required states? Forming the nation would annex those states/countries, but at least countries would be able to manage their future lands with more flexibility.

For example, Italy wouldn't have to occupy all of the Mediterranean + France + England, without a single puppet, to form the Roman Empire.

Same about old achievements. Having to occupy everything forces players to play a certain way and some, like me, enjoy the game more making puppets instead of painting the map. And diplomatically annexing puppets is just boring. Making puppets needs having conquered the enemy country just the same, so there's no difference regarding the requirements.

Darn, I was hoping for a "Cape to Cairo Completed" achievement, considering this would be the last time Britain had a chance of finishing it.
