The hour of decision is almost here.mans

If your Gort Line survives until Winter, the war with both Germany and the USSR can be won. If not, things will look rather dicey.

If France stands when Pearl Harbor happenes, the war is basically won

On December of 1941 American AI has a minimal army (some garrisons and cavalry divisions),so its a more than 2 years of French defence before American army will arrive.

Thank you good sir! You read through the whole thing? Daaamn.
The French at least got revenge. Italy will probably fall before Germany or the Russians.
The Western front is utter chaos, death everywhere, hard to say what will happen. as @Kurt_Steiner said; These AAWWII Germans seem a bit stuck in the mud here. They used a lot of time to win in Poland, lost the invasion of Norway due to slowness, and now with the slow advance through the low lands. Hard to make sense of it. as previously mentioned; I am running virtual save state. So I don't have to boot up the game. But maybe I HAVE upset the AI by the few boot ups I have done over the course of these 8 months?

Those silly Italians.... and silly us. They jumped the gun, and found the desert empty. I just hope the French pound them to dirt before they can reach Alexandria.

Interesting. I believe Germany has lost the war already. If they take France, they still do not have Norway, and Russia has been ramping up big time in their war with us, they are much stronger than OTL 40's USSR. So they will steamroll Hitler come next year. And then they will steamroll us...

Geniune question here: How would you see us being able to crush the Soviet Union?

If France stands when Pearl Harbor happenes, the war is basically won
Easy access for American GI's into Europe.
When Russia invades Germany it will be quick. Regardless if Hitler secures France. But could USA and Britain win a war against the Soviets? Whiles also battling the Germans, Italians, and Japanese?

Yup, not to mention that we are talking about IRL December 2017 before that declaration of war. A far distant land from here. My questions are, in the order of most urgent:

  1. How to keep France in the war
  2. How to keep casualties down
  3. How to beat Italy/Stop Italy taking Alexandria and Suez Canal
  4. How to stop USSR crossing in over Turkey/Afghanistan (If the AI is not "contemplating" this, it should, and I might override it for sake of historical realism)
  5. How to beat the USSR (or stop them, and turn it into a cold war)
  6. How to stop Japan crossing in over unguarded Burma and India.

many questions, and things are happening FAST now! Every week a new bombshell (no pun intended) is dropped.

How to keep france in the war? Simple, stabilize the front. How? Beet the germans at their own game. You are going to have to encircle and destroy german divisions in the field. This way, the soviet might also come in, and open a second front in poland

Difficult without keeping France in the war.

What does your build queue look like? It would have been best to have put all IC into INF or even MIL at the start of the game.

22 - 29 May '40 - French breakthrough in Italy

"General Maxime Weygand is something of an enigma. He has a famous reputation, crowned by his victory with Pilsudski over the Bolshevik forces in 1920. I have met him on several occasions, most recently early this year in the Middle East, and always found him friendly, quick and receptive, a modest man carrying his fame without affectation or conceit."

- Anthony Eden, 29th May 1940 -

It's proper awful out there, chap. The public are so tired and scared of the glooming prospect of another long and bloody war. The Netherlands and Luxembourg have fallen. But perhaps a bliss in disguise, as support for our government is at an all time high. They see now what madness lies behind the German actions. The Russian war has been a harder sell, but it does seem to be one they are willing to buy. All our propaganda explains and put emphasis on Stalin and Hitler having a secret pact. That they carved up Poland together, and waged war on Finland, TOGETHER. Germany has invaded or tried to invade every bloody country in their vicinity. The British man and woman can clearly see that it must be stopped.

Hah! I'm sorry, old boy. I get carried away sometimes. Before you sit down, fetch Ms. Darling, and tell her to bring us some tea. I am feeling a bit under the weather, wouldn't want to waste good Scotch on a numb palate.

It is May 29th and the war is nearing its 9th month.
We are beginning to see Great War like casualty numbers on the front line...

BLOCKADE:
Blockade.jpg
Some good news first though. Whatever the hell the Italians are doing, they are doing it wrong. But as Nelson once so brilliantly said: "when the enemy is committed to a mistake, we must not interrupt him too soon."
The Royal Fleet this week sunk 21 merchant ships. I thought I had the tonnage written up here somewhere.... Ah, nevermind! Safe to say that if we keep this up the Italians will have severe problems with their supply efficiency.

RETREAT IN AFRICA:
Africa.jpg
Bad news in Africa though, old boy. As Egyptian and Iraqi infantry retreated from the horrible Battle of Sidi Barrani. The British Raj have been instrumental in quelling any dissent among the soldiers. But as I said last week; The kettle that is Jerusalem is about to blow. Iraq, Egypt, even the British Indians. None of these people want to be under the British rule. After the loss of this battle I am surprised we're even in control of the retreat. If the Italians only knew how easily they could turn those forces against us. They went with the opposite strategy. One that united the Iraqis and Egyptians, not for their love for us, but their hatred for a vicious, hateful enemy. Egypt and Iraq has lost 12 000 fighting men to the bullet or chains since the battle started. The Italians lost 9 000. We are on a retreat through the desert now.

MASSIVE CASUALTIES IN THE LOWLANDS:
Westernfront.jpg
These numbers pale in comparison to the mayhem currently being played out on the western-front. The French have sent vast armies into the Low countries only to be pinched and cut off by the German panzer forces. Their Blitzkrieg is however slowing down. 16 500 Germans, killed, wounded, or captured. Our own forces have been given strict orders to remain behind the Gort line to guarantee a strong line of defence for the inevitably German push into France. The French themselves are split over this; General Gamelin has expressed his doubts and confusion over this choice of strategy. General Georges was more optimistic when Churchill visited them both last week. However, the numbers are in from this week of fighting: the French army lost 67 000 men, and 416 tanks. That's your average city, old boy. Every family fully grown soldiers. Every bicycle a top of the art French tank. All of it now gone. No use to us anymore. If this is to be The Great meat grinder part 2, The Germans are winning it.

RAF AND ALLIED BOMBERS SENT TO SLOW DOWN ADVANCING FORCES:
RAF.jpg
More horrid news. So, the RAF is now split into 4 large parts: Hugh Dowding's fighter wings in Paris, Coningham's advanced bomber group in Norwich, Bowhill's naval bombers in Norway, and the Commonwealth group, a ragtag group of bomber planes and pilots of various quality. We sent everything but Bowhill to the Low countries under pressure from the French and to delay the German offensive as much as possible. As has been the case so often with these sodding airplanes, it was a damn disaster!

TORN TO PIECES:
RAF2.jpg
I am to put some numbers in front of you. You won't understand what they truly mean. How could any of us?
How could we truly understand the utter destruction we are talking about.
RAF And the Commonwealth lost 184 bombers (including 10 French), and 231 fighters. A whopping 415 aircrafts lost in the last 7 days! We kept pressing our boys to the limit. Bogging down the advancing force as much and as often as we could. The Luftwaffe also must have taken a stunning amount of punishment. 209 bombers and 100 fighters were registered shot down by our boys. Hugh Dowding is furious about the whole situation. He lost so many good men this week. And the state of the 4 fighter wings in Paris? NO go for the next 2 weeks.

AUXILIARY FLEET II FINISH FERRYING FORCES FROM ÅLESUND, NORWAY:
Reinforcements.jpg
Chaos in Dunkirk as our last divisions from Norway finally landed in Dunkirk and were immediately sent onwards on train. I am honestly not sure on the logistics of this, at it's a bloody mess. But Verdun and Reimes are the two rally points for most of them. The Norwegians I have lost track of, but fair to say they should be far from the front lines.
Winston, Gort, and Ironside are now working on bolstering up everything for Operation Bernard. The talk is of ungodly amount of supplies and equipment in order to get them ready for the next 3 weeks of German punishment.
The next 3 weeks will dictate the tide of this war...

AUXILIARY FLEET III ON ITS WAY TO ALEXANDRIA WITH BRITISH RAJ REINFORCEMENTS:
Aux.jpg
We picked up a smaller army from India. And we're now in the process of ferrying them to Alexandria. They can be deployed there with some smaller, weaker forces assigned to quell dissent in Jerusalem and the areas close to the city. ETA. June 8. However, there are some tough choices to be made here, chap. If we loose Africa to Italy, we loose the Suez Canal, and with it our link to Asia. We also loose Alexandria and our main port to the Mediterranean. BUT things have taken a rather interesting turn. And one that our Indian brothers might be needed for...

FRANCE BREAKS THROUGH ENEMY DEFENCES IN NORTHERN ITALY:
Genoa3.jpg
I must say I didn't believe what I was hearing when we first got news of this. Not only have the French pushed in over the Alps in a splendid fashion, yesterday they won a small battle in Florence. In bloody Florence, old boy! Get me that map and I'll show you the lunacy of it all! See there, Florence is in the heartland of Italy. Genoa has been taken, battles are now raging in Milan. Mussolini must be shaking in his boots! We can send our Africa reinforcements to Genoa within 2 weeks. We must, must'n we? The Italians should be thinking the same thing. If we loose the Suez Canal, but gain ROME? What are we waiting for? How long can Italy advance in Africa as Florence, Venice, Milan, ROME falls. We can take Italy out of the war in a matter of months, not to mention; We can attack Germany from its exposed underbelly by pushing North through Trento. The attack would perhaps not mortally wound the Third Reich, But it would force it to abandon the western front offensive all together. It is paramount that we keep France in the game. They lost 3800 men this week to Italy. However, and I'm rather proud to say this; Led by the famous General Maxime Weygand, the French forces (Now affectionately nicknamed The Tigers of the Alps) in Italy destroyed or captured:

13 300 Italian soldiers.
5 Destroyers (DD)
And 1 Heavy cruiser stationed at Genoa.
The Tigers should be given a bloody medal and a piece of French soil large enough to build a farm on if you ask me.
Mussolini must be regretting his foolish decision to declare war on us.

FAILURE TO INSTIGATE REVOLT IN CENTRAL ITALY:
Partisans.jpg
There are other ways we can assist the French in this urgent matter. One was attempted this week to fund the Anarchist partisans in Perugia. The attempt failed. SIS and our spy network has been working non stop this last month trying to get something off the ground. I believe we are rushing it, but Control wants things his way, and who am I to argue. If we could just get a cell to take the pressure off the front lines. cause some panic in the our enemy.

HOME FLEET CRUSHES SMALL SOVIET FORCE:
Soviet.jpg
And the last news this week. The Russian fleet again caught with their trousers down in the North Sea. The Italians attempt to run merchant fleets through our blockade. The Soviets no smarter to think they can send forces from the Atlantic to Leningrad and back. Dudley Pound and Bowhill were alerted and 10 destroyers sunk without any problems. When we win this war, chap. Dudley Pound should stand right next to Churchill at the victory table. One medal bigger than the other on his chest. That marvelous bastard has sunk more enemy ships than, dare I say it? Admiral Nelson!
We still need his magic, though. The Royal navy is the only thing capable of preventing the Soviet threat from pounding down on us. The French soldiers are loosing to the Germans, but winning in Italy. Can we stop the German spring offensive with Operation Bernard, or must we gamble by pushing North trough Trento as soon as possible?

So many questions. It can be hard to sleep at night. I worry about our boys out there. The last time something like this happened the world was forever changed. Empires in ashes. Are we destined to relive the sins of our fathers?

Until next time, officer.
England Expects.

Reactions:
The French will take Rome again, and then the Germans will kneel before the King.

Then we will give them some nice democracy or even a monarchy again. Also the Ruskies, can't for get them. Give them freedom as a democracy as Tsar will still stir up desent in the region.

Are not any ANZAC forces available to be send to Egypt?

Damn, I miss the Southafricans right now...

My word! If the French succeed in their Italian offensive, they might have won us the war! Or, at the very least, prevented the Hun from winning the war. It seems the spirit of Napoleon lives on in France, old boy!

I agree; South Africa sits on its hands and watches as the fate of millions waits in the balance! Their forces could be making all of the difference on either of our periphery front lines. If I were a violent person, I would suggest a punitive expedition against the German-collaborationist government; I am thankful I am for peace, always.

I've been eagerly following since the beginning, and now the moment is upon us; I am excited to see how this will turn out.
Were there major encirclements in the Netherlands? It seems that Belgium hasn't been the site of major Allied encirclements yet, thankfully. &&hopefully a quick dust-off of the Italians will trigger their historical capitulation about 3 years early. We can only hope. If all it does is divert German divisions from France, then something has been accomplished in Italy. As for Egypt... well, lets not talk about Egypt.

Wow things are heating up! Looks like its basically a race to see if Germany can break through the Gort/Maginot lines before France reaches Austria.

Personally, I can't see anything but a Soviet steamroll in France if they don't make peace with the Entente sometime during their invasion of Germany. Both sides are going to be so drained that the red flag will wave over Lisbon unless some agreement is reached. And if France falls... I doubt there's any getting it back. The Red Army is gearing up, and whoever is still Axis by the time it reaches them will become socialist.

Only faithful servants of the crown get to kneel. War criminals get to hang.

Hopefully Rome can be captured quickly. And I agree. This could ruin any plans the Germans have for a successful Manstein offensive. However, by invading the boot we risk exposing our flank in the alps to a counter-attack from the Germans.
Are not any ANZAC forces available to be send to Egypt?
I'll look into it. There might be 1 or 2 divisions in the far reaches of the Commonwealth that I can send to Egypt in a matter of months. But the Westernfront is locked down. Whatever we have there now will stay there. I have a feeling we can really halt the German advances here.
As for Egypt... well, lets not talk about Egypt.
I don't know how fast Italy can reach Alexandria. My hope is a full month. That's the time France has to cause enough panic in Italy that they start pulling out. Or at least halt their attack. We are bringing in the bottom of the barrel soldiers to maintain control of partisans and to delay attacking forces where we can.
Damn, I miss the Southafricans right now...
Don't remind me! I see that smug little Hertzog down in the South of Africa. With plenty of divisions, just loafing about...
I've been eagerly following since the beginning, and now the moment is upon us; I am excited to see how this will turn out.
Thank you :) those comments mean a lot. It's rather interesting, now that we are so invested in these armies. I spent months IRL ferrying those bloody Canadians! I can't recommend "realtime" playing enough!
Were there major encirclements in the Netherlands? It seems that Belgium hasn't been the site of major Allied encirclements yet
There has been a couple divisions destroyed. 150 000 men lost (IIRC) on the French side total, same with Netherlands and Belgium. But the largest French armies are intact. I hope they can gradually fight, and retreat, fight and retreat, until they cross the Gort line. And then we will take it from there. The Blitzkrieg is taking its sweet time though. I smell a trench war...
y u so suck, Italy?
Guess the white flag now applies to the Italians
I bet Hitler is furious at the fumbling military buffoonery of Mussolini. To be honest though, none of them are getting the job done.
The hype train is on the go!!!
Choooo! Choooo!
Wow things are heating up! Looks like its basically a race to see if Germany can break through the Gort/Maginot lines before France reaches Austria.
Yes, I can't see a Nazi Germany surviving this catastrophe. If they fail to capture France, and Austria comes under attack. We might see a coup orchestrated by SIS and Wilhelm Canaris.
Personally, I can't see anything but a Soviet steamroll
If Germany does not have a revolution, Russia will invade.
If it has a British supported revolution, Russia will invade.
If Germany however has a worker's revolution... They might be allied

The Red Army is gearing up, and whoever is still Axis by the time it reaches them will become socialist.
We could secure the alps with 30 mountaineers. That would leave Turkey and the lowlands to deal with. But that is a far distant future.

Germany's future now hangs in the balance, and if they don't pull out something good come 1941. A war weary Germany has no interest in going back to the western front of 1917.
