22 - 29 May '40 - French breakthrough in Italy
"General Maxime Weygand is something of an enigma. He has a famous reputation, crowned by his victory with Pilsudski over the Bolshevik forces in 1920. I have met him on several occasions, most recently early this year in the Middle East, and always found him friendly, quick and receptive, a modest man carrying his fame without affectation or conceit."
- Anthony Eden, 29th May 1940 -
(Army of the Alps, now also known as "Les Tigres des Alpes" in Genoa, Italy. May, 1940)
(London)
It's proper awful out there, chap. The public are so tired and scared of the glooming prospect of another long and bloody war. The Netherlands and Luxembourg have fallen. But perhaps a bliss in disguise, as support for our government is at an all time high. They see now what madness lies behind the German actions. The Russian war has been a harder sell, but it does seem to be one they are willing to buy. All our propaganda explains and put emphasis on Stalin and Hitler having a secret pact. That they carved up Poland together, and waged war on Finland, TOGETHER. Germany has invaded or tried to invade every bloody country in their vicinity. The British man and woman can clearly see that it must be stopped.
Hah! I'm sorry, old boy. I get carried away sometimes. Before you sit down, fetch Ms. Darling, and tell her to bring us some tea. I am feeling a bit under the weather, wouldn't want to waste good Scotch on a numb palate.
It is May 29th and the war is nearing its 9th month.
We are beginning to see Great War like casualty numbers on the front line...
Some good news first though. Whatever the hell the Italians are doing, they are doing it wrong. But as Nelson once so brilliantly said:
"when the enemy is committed to a mistake, we must not interrupt him too soon."
The Royal Fleet this week sunk 21 merchant ships. I thought I had the tonnage written up here somewhere.... Ah, nevermind! Safe to say that if we keep this up the Italians will have severe problems with their supply efficiency.
Bad news in Africa though, old boy. As Egyptian and Iraqi infantry retreated from the horrible
Battle of Sidi Barrani. The British Raj have been instrumental in quelling any dissent among the soldiers. But as I said last week; The kettle that is Jerusalem is about to blow. Iraq, Egypt, even the British Indians. None of these people want to be under the British rule. After the loss of this battle I am surprised we're even in control of the retreat. If the Italians only knew how easily they could turn those forces against us. They went with the opposite strategy. One that united the Iraqis and Egyptians, not for their love for us, but their hatred for a vicious, hateful enemy. Egypt and Iraq has lost 12 000 fighting men to the bullet or chains since the battle started. The Italians lost 9 000. We are on a retreat through the desert now.
MASSIVE CASUALTIES IN THE LOWLANDS:
These numbers pale in comparison to the mayhem currently being played out on the western-front. The French have sent vast armies into the Low countries only to be pinched and cut off by the German panzer forces. Their Blitzkrieg is however slowing down. 16 500 Germans, killed, wounded, or captured. Our own forces have been given strict orders to remain behind the Gort line to guarantee a strong line of defence for the inevitably German push into France. The French themselves are split over this; General Gamelin has expressed his doubts and confusion over this choice of strategy. General Georges was more optimistic when Churchill visited them both last week. However, the numbers are in from this week of fighting: the French army lost 67 000 men, and 416 tanks. That's your average city, old boy. Every family fully grown soldiers. Every bicycle a top of the art French tank. All of it now gone. No use to us anymore. If this is to be The Great meat grinder part 2, The Germans are winning it.
RAF AND ALLIED BOMBERS SENT TO SLOW DOWN ADVANCING FORCES:
More horrid news. So, the RAF is now split into 4 large parts: Hugh Dowding's fighter wings in Paris, Coningham's advanced bomber group in Norwich, Bowhill's naval bombers in Norway, and the Commonwealth group, a ragtag group of bomber planes and pilots of various quality. We sent everything but Bowhill to the Low countries under pressure from the French and to delay the German offensive as much as possible. As has been the case so often with these sodding airplanes, it was a damn disaster!
I am to put some numbers in front of you. You won't understand what they truly mean. How could any of us?
How could we truly understand the utter destruction we are talking about.
RAF And the Commonwealth lost 184 bombers (including 10 French), and 231 fighters. A whopping 415 aircrafts lost in the last 7 days! We kept pressing our boys to the limit. Bogging down the advancing force as much and as often as we could. The Luftwaffe also must have taken a stunning amount of punishment. 209 bombers and 100 fighters were registered shot down by our boys. Hugh Dowding is furious about the whole situation. He lost so many good men this week. And the state of the 4 fighter wings in Paris? NO go for the next 2 weeks.
AUXILIARY FLEET II FINISH FERRYING FORCES FROM ÅLESUND, NORWAY:
Chaos in Dunkirk as our last divisions from Norway finally landed in Dunkirk and were immediately sent onwards on train. I am honestly not sure on the logistics of this, at it's a bloody mess. But Verdun and Reimes are the two rally points for most of them. The Norwegians I have lost track of, but fair to say they should be far from the front lines.
Winston, Gort, and Ironside are now working on bolstering up everything for Operation Bernard. The talk is of ungodly amount of supplies and equipment in order to get them ready for the next 3 weeks of German punishment.
The next 3 weeks will dictate the tide of this war...
AUXILIARY FLEET III ON ITS WAY TO ALEXANDRIA WITH BRITISH RAJ REINFORCEMENTS:
We picked up a smaller army from India. And we're now in the process of ferrying them to Alexandria. They can be deployed there with some smaller, weaker forces assigned to quell dissent in Jerusalem and the areas close to the city. ETA. June 8. However, there are some tough choices to be made here, chap. If we loose Africa to Italy, we loose the Suez Canal, and with it our link to Asia. We also loose Alexandria and our main port to the Mediterranean. BUT things have taken a rather interesting turn. And one that our Indian brothers might be needed for...
FRANCE BREAKS THROUGH ENEMY DEFENCES IN NORTHERN ITALY:
I must say I didn't believe what I was hearing when we first got news of this. Not only have the French pushed in over the Alps in a splendid fashion, yesterday they won a small battle in Florence. In bloody Florence, old boy! Get me that map and I'll show you the lunacy of it all! See there, Florence is in the heartland of Italy. Genoa has been taken, battles are now raging in Milan. Mussolini must be shaking in his boots! We can send our Africa reinforcements to Genoa within 2 weeks. We must, must'n we? The Italians should be thinking the same thing. If we loose the Suez Canal, but gain ROME? What are we waiting for? How long can Italy advance in Africa as Florence, Venice, Milan, ROME falls. We can take Italy out of the war in a matter of months, not to mention; We can attack Germany from its exposed underbelly by pushing North through Trento. The attack would perhaps not mortally wound the Third Reich, But it would force it to abandon the western front offensive all together. It is paramount that we keep France in the game. They lost 3800 men this week to Italy. However, and I'm rather proud to say this; Led by the famous General Maxime Weygand, the French forces (Now affectionately nicknamed The Tigers of the Alps) in Italy destroyed or captured:
13 300 Italian soldiers.
5 Destroyers (DD)
And 1 Heavy cruiser stationed at Genoa.
The Tigers should be given a bloody medal and a piece of French soil large enough to build a farm on if you ask me.
Mussolini must be regretting his foolish decision to declare war on us.
FAILURE TO INSTIGATE REVOLT IN CENTRAL ITALY:
There are other ways we can assist the French in this urgent matter. One was attempted this week to fund the Anarchist partisans in Perugia. The attempt failed. SIS and our spy network has been working non stop this last month trying to get something off the ground. I believe we are rushing it, but Control wants things his way, and who am I to argue. If we could just get a cell to take the pressure off the front lines. cause some panic in the our enemy.
HOME FLEET CRUSHES SMALL SOVIET FORCE:
And the last news this week. The Russian fleet again caught with their trousers down in the North Sea. The Italians attempt to run merchant fleets through our blockade. The Soviets no smarter to think they can send forces from the Atlantic to Leningrad and back. Dudley Pound and Bowhill were alerted and 10 destroyers sunk without any problems. When we win this war, chap. Dudley Pound should stand right next to Churchill at the victory table. One medal bigger than the other on his chest. That marvelous bastard has sunk more enemy ships than, dare I say it? Admiral Nelson!
We still need his magic, though. The Royal navy is the only thing capable of preventing the Soviet threat from pounding down on us. The French soldiers are loosing to the Germans, but winning in Italy. Can we stop the German spring offensive with Operation Bernard, or must we gamble by pushing North trough Trento as soon as possible?
So many questions. It can be hard to sleep at night. I worry about our boys out there. The last time something like this happened the world was forever changed. Empires in ashes. Are we destined to relive the sins of our fathers?
Until next time, officer.
England Expects.
