Hi!

In the years 1936-1940, a series of events - some good, some bad - shaped the American political and economic dynamics. Among them were:

1. The Flint Sit-Down Strike: A six-week strike that idled an industry and led to its unionization.

2. The Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937: An act which would have destroyed the independence of America's Supreme Court. The threat to democracy was so clear that FDR's own party killed the bill. Republicans would make serious gains in the next election.

3. The 1937-1938 Recession: Caused by the US Government's own fiscal policies.

4. The Mississippi & Ohio River Flood of 1937: A once-in-a-century storm caused such severe flooding in America's industrial Midwest that the Coast Guard had to be mobilized to rescue tens of thousands of people from flooded cities.

5. Naval Act of 1938: Responding to Fascist expansionism, the US Congress authorized a 20% increase in the size of the US Navy.

6. The Great New England Hurricane: On September 21, 1938 one of the most destructive and powerful hurricanes in recorded history struck Long Island and Southern New England.

7. War of the Worlds: On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles aired the radio show 'War of the Worlds,' a dramatization of the novel by H.G. Wells. The result was a nationwide panic.

8. World Fair: On April 30, 1939, the New York World's Fair opened. Over the next 18 months, the World Fair generated millions of dollars of business and came to symbolize the end of the Great Depression.

The code for these events is below.

Have fun and game on!

General Motors tried to break up the strike with police and hired muscle, as it had in 1930 and 1934, but the 1935 Wagner Act legalized strikes and the GM workers enjoyed strong popular support. The Michigan National Guard mobilized to protect the workers from the strike-breakers. On February 11, 1937, GM agreed to the workers' demands. The strike's success led to the unionization of the US automobile industry."
