A quote from Ghost Recon: "When you meet them in combat, you are already dead." ;)

Great update! GFM Beck speaks rather freely. He better deliver if he wants to keep the ear of the Fuhrer, me thinks... :D

Diary of Rear Admiral Dönitz, newly appointed F.d.U. (Führer der U-Boote, leader of submarines, as in history)
January 10th, 39
England must be made to feel the sting of the war. I have the concept, I have the tactics, I have good, aggressive commanders – I only lack the boats. Instead of building this behemoths BISMARCK and TIRPITZ, the Reich should build an armada of submarines. The new Type IX design is ideal for the task at hand. But up to now, not a single boat has been built. There are not even plans to start production.
As newly appointed F.d.U. I will meet the Führer next week. I am sure he will listen to me, and I wont miss this opportunity.

Diary of GFM Beck, Chief OKW
January 13th, 39
This Dönitz fellow has impressed the Führer and talked him into building a strong submarine fleet for convoy hunting in the Atlantic to strangle England. Though I admit the plan has strategic merit, in our current siuation a bit counterproductive to other plans. For example the upcoming Western offensive, where we can use every Panzer and Stuka we can muster. HIS only comment: We will build submarines AND Panzer and Stukas. Followed by a monologue again about German steel production compared to French and English one. After 15 minutes he is at the shortcomings of Indians as soldiers in the English Army, and I realised I had lost track of his words.
Quote: “ An Indian cant even kill a bug...”
In the evening, a Luftwaffe Leutnant with a message from Göring to the Führer asked after HIS whereabouts and Warlimont answered with grave voice and flat face:
“Pobably annihilating bugs somewhere.”
Warlimont has to be more careful, but we had a good laugh nonetheless.

The war, March 30th - April 13th, 1939

Diary of Oberst Warlimont, Deputy chief of operational staff, OKW

March 30th, 39
The Polish DOW couldnt have come at a better moment. Dangerous as it may be, the Western offensive is dead because of it, at least for now. Thank God for that.
Its strategically wise to deal with the Poles first, as the GFM pointed out, and, what a surprise, our analysis is for once identical with HIS intentions. At the Mittagslage (“Noon situation”, regular staff meeting with Hitler after he woke up, usually around 12 – 13 hours) HE rages like a wounded predator. Poland has to be annihilated. Theres the word again. The Polish state will vanish, no mercy, fanatical revenge and so on.
Frigthening – this fellow is the leader of Germany, and we all obey him. If his wrath ever comes upon US, God bless our souls. After a sheer endless tirade, he suddenly exclaimed:
“I need Göring. Göring, thats a fellow cool as ice. Thats what I need know, cool as ice.”
Göring was summoned, surprisingly he was in Berlin, not off hunting somewhere. We now learned what it meant to be cool as ice – standing there broadlegged, making silly jokes and nodding emphatically to every word HE said. Warsaw is to be destroyed by air attack. Well, Beck reminded the Reichsmarshall and HIM of the necessity to employ Luftwaffe in tactical strikes at the front. HE still listens to Beck. I saw Görings eyes at that. Here Beck has an enemy if I ever saw one.
Beck brought HIM and his paladin back to the situation at hand. Nearly all our forces preparing for the western operation are ordered east, especially the Panzer formations. East Prussia, totally void of defenders, is lost for the time being. As expected, HE is furious about that. Beck cites Frederik the Great:
“He who wants to defend everything, defends nothing in the end.”
With old Frederik you are usually on the save side with HIM, our beloved Führer admires the Prussian king greatly, probably sees himself as the king reborn, surrounded by enemies, but triumphant in the end.
Anyway, the reference calms HIM, and we can continue with decision making.
Probably, Oppeln and parts of Slovakia are lost too. Wont matter if we complete our rochade. We estimate polish advance rate to be slow and their high command to be careful with its moves. Beck wants to strike from the backhand, without making a plan beforehand.
We will rely primarily on speed of Panzerkorps. Beck, freed of the nightmare of taking on the French, is quite confident. The Poles are a task Wehrmacht can accomplish. Add the spring weather, the mostly open terrain, the lack of fortifications – we will get it done.
HE seems surprised by our matter of factly confidence. An amateur, thats what he is.
We went to work. The Poles will regret their boldness soon...

Very good reads once again, I just wish for more "battle plan" pictures. Reading the specific details of battle can be a strain on the brain to try to envision.

Good to see Guderian leading those panzers with the combined arms bonus! ;)

Great update, looks like the customs will have to guard a Russian border soon :D

BTW: what does KRIEMHILD mean? I LOVE fancy codewords.

KRIEMHILD is a womans name of ancient germanic origin.
In a legend, the great dragonslayer Siegfried married Kriemhild, the sister of the king of Burgundy. Envying Siegfried his powers and seeing him as a danger to the dynasty, the weaponsmaster Hagen, with knowledge of King Gunter, murdered Siegfried. Kriemhild vowed revenge, remarried the king of the hunns Etzel (Attila in history), and invited his brother Gunter and his entourage to their castle, where they were all slain. They were called the Nibelungen, and this story inspired the german 19th-century componist Wagner to great, some say bombastic operas. Hitler loved Wagner-operas, especially the Nibelungen. The name GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG (eclipse of the gods) for the 1944 scenario of HOI is from these operas too.
Anyway, Kriemhilds revenge seems a fitting reference when dealing with the "polish backstab", dont you think? ;)

Oh yes, the name fits in :D

That was indeed a nice touch in your AAR; a hidden deeper meaning :)

Perhaps "Ride of the Valkyries" would fit as a codename instead of Fall Gelb? Nah, too long.

Diary of GFM Beck, Chief OKW

April 18th, 39
The enemy is encircled in area Poznan-Oppeln. Operation a success, Poles have nothing to counter our armored assault. There you have it, the right terrain, the right weather, and the concept of Blitzkrieg really works.
Führer agitated about the “failure” at Torun. No failure at all in my opinion. While the real operation southwest of Torun proceeded as planned, the diversionary attack across the Vistula has drawn up to 18 enemy divisions north. There they cant help their comrades at Posznan and Oppeln. Way to Königsberg nearly free too.
Explained this to Führer, who grasps the concept quickly. He has an agile mind and some operational instinct, one has to grant him that.
With everything going so well, the mood at HQ is relaxed, even when the Führer is around. I have the strong feeling he is learning to trust me and my staff. Well, my own confidence in the whole Werhmacht has risen considerably these days. Maybe we can even take on the French this summer, when this intermezzo is over. They dont move in the West, altough its a second golden opportunity. Is Führer right after all? Do they lack will and morale to fight?
I am starting to believe it...

Diary of GFM Beck, Chief OKW

May 12th, 1939
Poland is over. Problem of enemy remnants in forested areas, might become Partisans. Higher need of security forces, a drain on our manpower.
Mass of assets will be redeployed west. If Bolsheviks attack, we have polish territory to trade for time. Seems not likely at present, Red Army after the officer purges only a hollow shell.
I study the different plans for the West. I prefer a strong right flank, going over Antwerp and Ghent to Channel coast and then wheeling down on Paris. Its a bit like Schlieffen, but the Kaisers army lacked Luftwaffe and Panzer. Superiority in morale, tactics, traning and leadership over western enemy should give us the required edge. Troops as well as leaders are seasoned now, after GRÜN and KRIEMHILD.
