I had NO IDEA this game existed or was coming out. I happened to be on Paradox Games website, on the "Games" page and noticed it and clicked on it. I cannot tell you the feelings I felt...
Civ IV is probably the greatest replayable game ever made. I only got in on Civ IV, and I remember that people had said, "Oh, Civ III, that was the ultimate game, Civ IV is terrible," and the like. Seeing how it was my first Civ game, I liked it a lot, and am at the point now of thinking it might be the most well made game ever, when factoring in fun, replay, value for the buck and quantity of gameplay materials (ie, all the options it has).
So I have never wanted to go back and try Civ I, II or III. I've heard about them, I'm a gamer, I just never got on board until Civ IV. The graphics alone just look too much improved from III to IV for me to be able to go back and fall in love with that one, plus, pollution and happiness are the two elements about the city population in Civ IV; I've heard it was painfully detailed with taxes, pollution, unrest, sickness, sewage, etc., etc...or things to that effect, anyway. The two from Civ IV make it more than enough to keep up with, I would not want all that from Civ III.
The one thing I have wanted, literally said, for many years, is a "High Fantasy" type game that plays exactly like Civ. A "Dungeons & Dragons" or "Lord of the Rings" world (though the D&D was clearly sprouted from the base of the Land of Tolkien), but with the same gameplay/options/mechanics as the Civ series has. There was never one done. I know "Fall From Heaven" was touted as that, and the guy said it actually sprouted from a D&D pen-n-paper campaign he ran, but it was clearly not what I wanted. Just too different from "Spells/Magic/Trolls/Orcs/Dragons/Wizards/Archers/Knights/etc." that I wanted.
I also bought Civ V. I cannot say it is bad. There are some improvements. I just think Civ IV plays better. I fell, somehow, more in control of how my Empire changes the world than in Civ V. In Civ V, I feel like I am going through the motions, but in Civ IV, I felt powerful. So I don't think Civ V is a bad game at all, I just enjoyed Civ IV a lot more.
Well, FINALLY, there is a game of EXACTLY what I want in a Civ mod/game. EXACTLY! I cannot believe this thing is coming out. Literally, I have stated many times that I want to play CIV in the D&D world. I have never seen a mod that did that. None even close from what I wanted.
This game does that. I watched a guy play for 35 minutes on a preview of the game; it is exactly what I want! There is one smaller-ish kind of thing that I did notice, several of the standard races from "High Fantasy" worlds were not there. No Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Lizard men, Orcs. I did see Goblin Skirmishers, and monster spiders, and ghost wolves, and flying rats and rat armies, but I for one would LOVE to see the main races of the game be expanded from HUMAN, UNDEAD and MONSTERS to also include those standard fantasy races, especially Elves and Dwarves.
Hopefully, this game will be able to be modded, then there is no question the fan-base will add these guys in there. If not, I would pay for an expansion that added these things.
OVERALL, though, I must say...I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!! I have been wanting this game since I first played Civ IV in 2004 or whenever it first came out.
I am so glad I accidentally found out about Warlock: Master of the Arcane...it is EXACTLY what I have wanted to play as a Civ game since I started playing them!!!
Again, only thing so far I saw was the lack of "High Fantasy" races, and personally, I wish it was more like Civ IV than Civ V, but I can still live with both of those problems if this game plays anything like that 35 minute preview indicated it would...and I am close to 100% positive it will.
I already pre-purchased it yesterday! Less than two weeks. I am so glad I stumbled upon it!!! I've been waiting 7 or 8 years for this game...
