Folks,

As you know, Eutopia has been running on the Paradox forums for almost four years.

That ends today.

Those of you who were with us for the Eutopia 4 transition (and that’s most of you) will recall the almost universal agreement that the greatest difficulty Eutopia 3 faced was a lack of players. We were pleased to see the expected influx when Eutopia 4 began – but it proved much smaller, and much more temporary, than we had hoped. Indeed, very few of those newcomers remain today. While we usually get a few new players at each election, experience has shown that very few of these stick around. Further, it is no secret that election season has been right around the corner for weeks, but no new blood has been attracted. This is not an encouraging sign.

Much thought and electronic ink has gone into contemplating why online projects like Eutopia constantly bleed players, and how to combat it. But the theory is less important than the reality, which is that we have only a dozen players left, not all of whom are widely active. We have lost many of our most active players this term, such that we’ve had to replace the President thrice for inactivity. The ministries and GA debates are clearly suffering, as well. The latest citizen registry was the final nail in the coffin, proving the losses which we had long suspected.

We do not do this lightly. Eutopia has been a constant part of this forum, and a part of our lives, for a long time now. But inactivity breeds inactivity, and we have progressed too far down that spiral to sustain the game. Better a dignified burial now, ourselves, than have the Powers That Be force the matter because of a lack of activity, as has happened on these forums before.

With no desire to let the universe of Eutopia vanish into the ether in toto, we have taken the liberty of squirreling away much of the background data, maps, and the like. We urge anyone who wishes to save anything to act now, as we fully expect that it will be gone soon.

To our veterans, it was an honor and a privilege to play and GM alongside you. To our newcomers, we apologize for our inability to recreate the richness of earlier incarnations of Eutopia.

To all our players: the subject of shutting the game down is not a new one among the GMs. It is your dedication to Eutopia, and your ability to make this an enjoyable place, that has sustained it for so long. Thank you all, best of luck, and farewell.

What????

Is there any way it can come back???? My God, there go my elections, there go my dreams...

ANYTHING, ANYTHING... I can advertise on the OT Forums, anything, this has been my primary pastime, why do you have to leave us, Eutopia, oh why!!!!!

Perhaps, rather than erasing Eutopia from the face of the Earty, we could find a way to make the collapse seem natural, say, a communist coup, or petty warlords, or something like that…

As for a final epitaph…

Term 14 (incomplete)

This term was one of the island’s most dramatic, violent, and unstable periods.

The Term 14 elections were bad for the Right. First, there was the emergence of two small parties right of the ENP, the Conservative Monarchist Party and the Patriotic Eutopians for Liberty. This diluted the power of the Right. The second factor was the campaign of presidential candidate Franz von Hapsburg, who two terms earlier had condemned Cuba’s involvement in Eutopian terrorism, who by this time was totally insane, often fighting with his own partymates, eventually leading to his suicide.

When it all came down to the results, the Eutopian Labor Party, a left-of-centre party led by long-time socialist Alexei Gonzov won 40% of the General Assembly seats. Many Eutopians, especially the politicians, expected Gonzov to be a traditional socialist, pacifist president who would preside over a relatively stable term.

This was not to be.

The first crisis took place not in Eutopia, but across its border with Tilapia. A brutal New Bengalese insurgency was combating the state-of-the-art Tilapian military, and launching terrorist attacks as far as Buen Puerto. The Tilapians responded with overwhelming military force, but still the insurgency could not be defeated. The Tilapians at first observed an agreement not to use fixed wing aircraft in their slf-termed ‘police action’. However, increasing attacks on Buen Puerto led to a general offensive that promised to ‘not leave one stone on top of another’. Mutual agreements to observe cease-fires only went so far. This prompted the Reverend Woodrow Park, along with Amnesty Worldwide, to attempt to negotiate this conflict to an end. However, this was not the only source of friction with Tilapia.

The Oceanus, A Eutopian spy ship, supported by submarine, had ben stranded, agrond, in Tilapian waters. Tensions high over New Bengal, Eutopian troops were sent to rescue the surveillance team form the Tilapians. However, their cover was blown when Tilapians opened fire on the party, and captured them. An already tense situation was further escalated when President Gonzov walked into the Tilapian Embassy and drew a firearm and threatened embassy personnel with it. Being led out of the embassy, almost every politician wished to impeach him, ended only by his suicide later, in his office, with the same gun he threatened the Tilapians with.

His Vice President, Colin Leary, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen. Thus began the first “Assembly Presidency”. After being locked inside the Assembly chamber, the delegates chose Dr. Jonathan Glasser, a former President. His Presidency was to see the end of the New Bengal Crisis. Also, this was the term wherein the first census in three decades was held.

Glasser, meanwhile, disappeared once again, and his sucessor, Jerome Vandelft, was also absent. Therefore, the General Assembly, once again, selected the next “Assembly President”, Alastar Cain.

According to the Eutopia Law Gazette, there were only three bills passed besides the Budget: The Vehicle Exhaust Regulations Bill, approved by a vote 87-13, the Western Eutopian Territory Support Bill, passed 71-29, and the New Bengal Reconstruction Act, passed 99-1.

What the hell?
Well presumably now there are fewer objections to you stealing players for your new RPG, but to succeed it will need good gamesmasters and more active players than we have here.

EDIT: FYI, some Eutopian players have started a more historically based RPG set in Transylvannia immediately following WW I, but, I am assured, without vampires. Here is the link...

Folks, if you enjoyed Eutopia, make sure you say thanks to those guys who made it happen: Mel, heagarty, Blade!, Hajji, Hawk, von Streusser, and those that came before them. Perhaps Mel, heag, or Blade can pop by and add their names.

From Yuri Voshkod (RIP) to Lucien Napier (RIP) to General Marcus Levarge (RIP), thanks for the game, and thanks for all the fish.

and summer is only a month away :(
