I was just wondering has anyone managed to do that and what are your starting tips? Last time I tried my entire army was wiped out almost immediately and I couldn't defend my provinces against the invaders and almost everyone around Kyoto seems to hate me.

Ashikaga isn't that big. While it's bigger than OPM, it's only few provinces in the earlier scenario. It's surrounded by many hostile and larger powers, which makes it a challenging situation and one where I have failed several times already.
