For anyone interested in oral tradition and history, I recommend this book https://books.google.co.uk/books?hl=en&lr=&id=A-CVBVzZwmAC&oi=fnd&pg=PR5&dq=oral+tradition+as+history&ots=CX2gdCB--L&sig=_Ih3vy8uIdB0V-rB6vIFyEIUzSg#v=onepage&q=oral tradition as history&f=false and this article https://www.jstor.org/stable/20024011. Both by Jan Vansina who specialised in Central Africa, the book tries to be more universal whilst the article focuses on Africa as the title suggests
It was Vansina's name I was completely blanking on a couple days ago, lol. Thanks for the source, I'll check it out.
