Almost every time I play they've destroyed Russia 20 years in and they often wreck Hungary as well.

You could try a earlier date when Russia is still pagan, so you could hope for an non-aggressive pact via marriage.

In my games they either convert to Orthodox or get eaten by Hungary (1066 start). Bad luck, it seems.
