Recently i've been playing a very fun game of Darkest Hour as the Soviet Union, as i've already played through 1936-1944, there is not much i can tell about that period, so i guess this will be screenshot based. The oldest screenie is from 1939, up until June of 1941 i have done most things historically as they happened.
After i took over the Baltics and won the Winter War, i spent from late 1940 to june 1941 preparing for (what i expected) Barbarossa. After it hit July 1941, i was slightly confused why Germany hadnt invaded. When it hit 1942, it just got me worried, because the more time they wait, the more they can prepare.
In Mid 1943 I invaded Turkey to gain permanent access through the strait of Marmara to guarantee no Italo/German sea invasion of Southern Russia. And a few weeks afterwards, invaded Iran for shits and giggles. To my surprise, Britain did nothing to act against it.
It was around 1943 or 1942 (i forget) when it then took infantry units no longer 80 days to make, but around 240. Which is the same time i said "screw it" and began building 100 militia in the same parallel run. Mainly because they took 100 days, and not 240. Currently I'm building 50 parallel on 5 serial run. Meaning, by 1945, i will have almost alot of militia.
Back to 1943, i saved game, reloaded as Germany, and then made 2 savegames, one called "Pre Barbarossa" and another called just "Barbarossa". One save was just yeah, 1943 save, the other is where i executed Barbarossa as Germany, reloaded as Soviet Union, and tried my best to hold out. Unfortunately, my border units were immediately defeated, even though i outnumbered them (wasnt using militia at the time). I knew i could not win on a smaller front with Germany, so i enlarged it, to their disadvantage by retreating to strategic positions behind the major rivers, positioned to defend the 3 main cities of my defence plan, Riga, Smolensk, and Kiev. I tried several times to retake Vitebsk from the Germans, but i wasnt victorious until my first conscripts arrived. But it was not enough, as soon as i had won there, the Germans began a MASSIVE front-wide offensive, and pushed me out of Latvia and Estonia, Pushed me back to Moscow, and Rostov. Not to mention, my forces in the north and center had been shattered and there was no sign of victory. Instead of taking defeat like a real man, i just reverted to my save in 1943, before that horrible war had even began.
Learning from my mistakes, i immediately ordered a 99 paralel run of Militia, to be fair, i also made a loner 1 militia unit to make it a total of 100 militia, to severely buff up my side of the border with Germany. Whats scary is that i think Germany is going to take me by surprise and launch barbarossa when I'm vulnerable. I've decided to declare war on Germany/Italy ready or not, if they come anywhere near Iran, and declare war on Japan if they come anywhere near Pakistan, which should be very soon.
With Africa and Europe beneath the Panzer tracks, the defeat of the Allies looms on the horizon. Only the Soviet union, and our mass hordes of lolscripts can save the allies. Which is why i just realized i could sell my spare units to the Allies..... how did i not think of that before..*self-facepalm*
