I don't know where I went wrong with the crusade

I am playing one of my first iron man games now that I have enough time logged, but I ran into a problem. I am trying every beginner's challenge, which is starting in Ireland and forming Britannia eventually. For some reason, England turned Muslim, which allowed some easy holy wars. that was all fine and dandy, but then the pope decided England needed a good old-fashioned crusade. I thought, alright this is my chance. I told the pope that I keep my claims, and went to war. I was top contributor, but now the pope has all the English land. My question is, where did I go wrong. I thought I would get the kingdom of england if I was the top contributor, and I have never seen the pope keep all the land.

I was top contributor in a crusade and I set stance to keep title. Pope now has all the land. Where did I go wrong?

There was a recipient, but it was some french guy. I've never been in a crusade where the pope listed a recipient, so that could be my misunderstanding. Why didn't the French person get the land then?

Maybe he had a claim on the title.

Well, it's no use crying over split milk, now it's your turn to turn muslim and jihad all the way to London!
It would be a great change to get use to secondary mechanics like cultural change

You can get a claimant of these titles into your court, land hin and press his claims.
