Chapter 6
Matters of state
After his successful Crusade king Fernando can finally rest easy. The Barbary pirates have been dealt a blow from which they will never recover and Castile´s position as defender of Christianity is unquestioned.

Fernando now seeks to further secure his northern borders and in 1442 he signs an alliance with France. France has been able to throw the English out of continental Europe and as such there is very little risk of being drawn into a conflict with the only nation who can pose a real threat to Castille on the seas.

A military alliance between France and Castille also unites the two strongest nations in Western Europe and acts as a very good counterweight to the Holy Roman Emperor (Hungary) Austria and Bohemia.

Ever sense Enrique conquered Sicily giving his life in the process; Castille has been forced to rely more and more on its navy to keep the budding empire together. In 1444 King Fernando passes a law that in time of need any man of seafaring habits can be pressed into service in the navy. This makes both crewing and constructing warships considerably cheaper. (2nd national idea: Press Gangs)
As a result 5 new warships are commissioned. 2 are to be built on Malta and the other three on Sicily.
With Castile possessing several port cities in Africa and a naval base in Malta trade with the Far East has become somewhat easier despite the Turks stranglehold on the Mediterranean. In May 1444 Castille sees a large increase in overseas trade

In February 1446 Fernando makes his first major decision as King as he limits some of the aristocracy’s privileges in favor of a slightly more plutocratic society.

(Slider move towards Plutocracy)

The direct response is a revolt by conservative nobles in Cantabria. Fernando dispatches Hermenegildo de Alarcon, son of Diego de Alarcon, to dispatch the troublemakers. The battle plan is however drawn up far too hastily and despite his martial skills Alarcon cannot manage a decisive blow against the rebels.

The Rebels retreat in good order towards Vizcaya. Unfortunately for them royalist troops from neighboring Burgos have managed to reach Vizcaya before the rebels and the entire force is promptly captured.

The lighter side of being king
When not plotting against his enemies, domestic or otherwise Fernando enjoyed art. He was an avid supporter of the Florentine school in Italy and often had grandiose paintings commissioned, mostly of himself in his finest armors and mounted on his greatest stallion.

Wedding bells
Sunday April 10th is a big day for 16 year old Juan de Avalos, Prince of Castille. It’s on this day he is married to the princess of Navarra, one Esperanza de Evreux.

This marriage will start an almost unbreakable bond of friendship between the two kingdoms. A steady stream of princesses of good breeding comes to Castille while the small kingdom is granted protection. (Royal marriage with Navarra, Later alliance)

The rest of Fernando’s reign passes rather uneventfully until his peaceful death in September 1449. Juan is crowned Juan II de Avalos Most catholic King of Castille and Leon, King of Aragon, King of Sicily and Guardian of Navarre.

As part of Juan’s inheritance from his father he also inherits all the lands of the former Kingdom of Aragon who now becomes an integral part of Castille. His heir is his younger new born brother and last child of Maria Queen of Sicily. Named Fernando after his late father
