Is there a point to the early game menaces other than trolling new players? I understand that there is a need for early game challenges to keep the players on their toes and not neglect their military, but all they seem to do is destroy critical investments at a point where the plahyers are the most vulnerable. Not only can you not detect them, so you can't even prepare for them, but most of them outclass your entire military so totally that all you'll end up doing is burning money. Hey, you know that totally sweet science station that you spent 2 million credits on? BOOM! Ghost ship! Now you just threw 2 million into a fire. Oh yeah, we also destroyed your entire defense fleet. Have fun with the rebellion.

I agree, but keep in mind that without those menaces, certain player races become unstoppable (hivers who no longer have to defend so much) and the AI ends up over defending their territory against nonexistant menaces. At least thats how it seems.

edit: I say this as someone who often turns them down or off over the same frustrations. Now I'm trying to wean myself off of doing that as I believe it negatively impacts the AI to do so. The AI already needs all the help it can get.
