Destroying a Dutchy title: legitimate way to loose the "too many duchies" penalty?

Still only a few hundred hours of gameplay so please forgive the CK2 101 nature of the question...

I've got demesne limit to spare, would like to add 2-3 counties adjacent to my other holdings. I managed to pinch a duchy and a couple counties from a vassal. Seems I can just destroy that extra duchy title to stay under limit. Is that a legit strategy? Other than the prestige cost, are the only people who are going to be upset the remaining counts who's counties are de jur?

Yeah. Or you can destroy duchies in your own desmense. If you own the entirety of it nobody will be mad.

That said you're king or emperor right? Those vassals will hate you anyways with a -20 desires ______ (duchy) title modifier. Whatever their de jure duchy is. If you want to take some bitter medicine to get rid of that modifier, destroying that duchy you're mentioning would be better long term. Though short term you will have that -40 destroyed title modifier.

Is there a reason you don't want to hand it out to a vassal?
