Missed this insertion of detail. ;)

Gasp! I found the brand, let me correct that !

That's what I get for starting to write in my pub, with no documentation at hand.

Off-topic, I've FINALLY been able to export my Victoria :Revolutions game to HoI2, and I'm looking at a very odd 1936 map which I'll post for your (possible) enjoyment. Sweden having an extensive Colonial Empire in Africa is something to behold, as is a super-industrialized Spain at war with the United States.

Aww, couldn't you let Osumi enjoy himself a little before killing him?

Also, did I miss an update, or have the NSB succeeded in staging a coup in the Netherlands with German aid? Did the cabinet and royal family go into exile? What are the other European democracies going to do about it?

I thought about it, actually, but when I write I'm a bit of a prude. ;)

No, the NSB hasn't staged a coup, the Royals are still there enjoying the dedication of their subjects in these dire times, and Holland is still very much a democratic nation - well, for the time being that is.

Rather, Hendrikus Colijn's government has presented its resignation after some active lobbying and a new government has been formed, of which the NSB is now a part of. It's a little development stemming from the "Fundraiser" update, where Captain de Jong pleaded with prominent Dutch industrialist so they could exert the necessary pressure on the Dutch government.

Well, that is risky all the same. While this does improve the Netherlands' chances of making it through WW2 unharmed this time if Germany doesn't want to undermine their fascist partners (which does seem realistic consider how many failures and setbacks they've had), and Japan can continue trading oil in the Dutch Indies thanks to the pro-German NSB, the question is how long the democratic parties will tolerate the blustering Anton Mussert and German-puppeted, party betraying, underlings. Not only does it go against the pillarized society model, but with a party divided between Dutch nationalists and Greater Germany advocates, I expect them to be as tumultuous as any populist party that loses the leadership of its demagogue. As having Mussert at the helm is like having nobody drive at all. This like one of those old familiar trainwrecks: you can't take your eyes off it.

And to think in real life the socialists where taken on as partners. It looks like that decision may be vindicated once again now.

The current Dutch government is still ARP-dominated, and led by Colijn. The NSB appears as a junior partner, albeit one that is enjoying support from industrial lobbies, and which benefits from its image of a brand-new government party, untainted by the mismanagement of the present economic crisis. Whether the political balance will be preserved, or the NSB will keep its enviable image of "bright new guys" naturally remains to be seen.

As for Germany, Hitler had only two real setbacks so far, the coup in Italy that precipitated the adjournment of the Austrian Anschluss. He's of course eager to make up for it by other successes, but things do look good for the masters of the Reich : Rearmament continues at a breakneck pace, and Central Europe is locking into step with Berlin piece by piece. Germany is leading the diplomatic/military race, with democracies struggling to keep up.

Brilliant update, as always.
The tensions and conflicts between the different Japanese military factions are really well described.

A most entertaining update, and well worth the wait while you familiarised yourself with Japan's labyrinthine political and cultural situation in this period.

Will the council follow Prince Fushimi Hiroyasu's advice and strike south and north at the same time? Can they really be so foolish as to suppose they could defeat both the USA and the USSR?

I hope the Dutch will realise that any papers they may sign relating to an oil trade deal are worthless! Looks as if the whole of the east will soon be aflame!

Off topic, I see you have now aquired HoI3 - any initial thoughts you'd like to share? How about a Crossfires total conversion!

Looking forward to the next... !

Was Osumi killed because he was somehow of a Liberal or because he had something to do with the 2-26 incident? Was he involved in that?

The Prince idea is, roughly, to propose a deal uniting the factions. Since striking north is desirable, but cannot be done without having created a protective glacis for the Japanese Empire in the Pacific, his proposal is rather to strike south and go defensive there, and then to strike north from a more secure position. The south is the shield, protecting desirable assets, the north is the sword, thrust at the enemy's homeland.

As for Japanese militarists' delusions of grandeur, next to them General de Gaulle was a model of self-effacing humility. ;)

The Dutch could end up in an interesting position. Should Germany include them in their sphere of special interest, Japan might never have an opportunity to really seize their colonial possessions. The NEI would exist as a de facto Japanese protectorate, but whose independence would, in the end, be guaranteed by Germany.

I won't convert this AAR, for so far HoI3 doesn't give me the kind of flexibility I enjoy with HoI2 : no Paradox-sanctioned editor, no cheat codes that I know of, no cession of provinces, no leaving the Allies for France. I could spend some time modding, but my modding skillz being not so mad and the game still is experiencing growing pains, better stick to the HoI2 format ! ;)

As for HoI3, I have great expectations for the game, once current AI/script trouble - and they seem rather serious actually - finally get solved. I also have a few qualms about events (more!more!) cosmetic issues (unit models notably) and better flexibility for the diplomatic mechanism, but I feel like the guy in Blood Diamond, holding a rough stone that has the potential to become an amazing gem.

Was Osumi killed because he was somehow of a Liberal or because he had something to do with the 2-26 incident? Was he involved in that?

Mostly because he was too Liberal for the hardliners - in this TL as in OTL, he refused to pledge allegiance to either of the Navy faction, and as such has thus become an obstacle for both.

Excellent and intriguing, AF! It's hard to imagine -- although we know it to be true -- how grand the planning of these officers was. "We will rule the world, it's just a question of which part first."

Vann

Another splendid update AF, thanks.

Will the Genyosha make an appearance?

What's the next update gonna be about?

The Genyosha, the Sakurakai, and the Aso industrial concern are all dangling before my eyes in a most tantalizing way!

The next update (40% written more or less, and indistinguishable from a dead crab) will be German and taste of salty water.

Well, to encourage you to finish it, I have nominated you for "Character Writer of the Week". Congrats!

Been keeping tabs on this...my vote is with Blum!

Blum did a lot for French society, ask yourself, do you want to be working 60-hour weeks for a weak fascist like de la Rocque?
or do you want a respectable 40-hour week with paid holidays!!!!!!!

Blum! Blum! Blum!

Avec La Bastille! Une vôte per la Blum!
