CHAPTER FOUR - OFFICE 2 REPORTS.

TOP SECRET

security level RESTRICTED

report as requested by the General Staff (ref 152/1080)

date - 10 V 1934

Office 2 to General's Staff Section II.

As requested in order 152/1080 Office 2 our organisation prepared this analisis of etnical composition in Central-Eastern Europe and the opportunities it presents to our organisation.

polishclaims-ethnicsdetails.jpg

Currently still large Polish communities live beyond the borders of our state.
It is the very purpose of Office 2 to infiltrate such communitis and recruit operatives amongst them.
As requested by Office 'B' and with the approval of the General Staff we concentrated our efforts in clandestine operations beyond the eastern border in Ukraine, Belorus, Caucasus and other promising regions.
Recent developments however demanded expansion of our activities in other, previously neglected areas.

We managed to define most promising directions for new actions demanded by the General Staff.

Lithuania (nr 1) remains the easiest to infiltrate. Large Polish and Polish-speaking community exists in Lithuania proper as well as in all other areas of the state. Which makes it the most promising direction of our new actions is large number of Poles in its capital Kowno ( lit. Kaunas).
Since Zeligowski's 'rebellion a state of virtual 'cold war' and lack of proper contacts with that state somehow limited our actions in this Lithuania, but given the importance of the latest orders and additional resources left to our disposal we firmly belive it is the easiest area to explore and promises greatest success with limited risk.

The Soviet Union (nr 2) thanks to presence of large Polish communities (circa 1 million) including around 500 000 and support gained among other ethnic groups ( Georgians, Azeri, Tartars, Armenians, Ukrainians) remains the area where our organisation has the most extensive network of operatives and greatest experience.
Latest events (ref: Great Hunger/Holodomor ) caused considerable losses, still the ruthless actions of the Soviet government mean we can count on support amongst previously neutral, even moderately hostile organisations with the right approach.

Czechoslovakia (nr 3) is in interest of Office 'A' for some time already and as demanded by the General Staff we are promised to use extensive network of contacts they created in that region.
Presence of large Polish majority in Zaolzie/Olza region means that it is in theory our most promising territory, hovewer activities of Czechosloval counter-intelligence makes it considerably more difficult than expected.
Still recently we managed to establish out agents in several critical areas (ref 144/1080).
Office 'B' made greatest progress in Slovakia and Transcarpathian Ruthenia (3a). Since Slovakian separatist are already supported by our organisation and Office 'B' we deem sufficiently prepared if required by the General Staff.
Ruthenia is still a 'new' area to us, but one of most promising ones too.
Pur operatives already infiltrated structures of local forces ( 2nd Infantry Corps).

Germany ( 4) since the end of the Third Silesian Uprising is seen as rather easy penetrate. Sizable Polish and Polish-speaking live in Oppeln/Opole area as well as in northern Masuria (southern part of Eastern Prussia. Also virtually all larger German cities offer good opportunities to use, especially industrial Ruhr where most of 'german Poles' live or work.
Our orders are to ease the pressure in Germany so many operatives are kept in hiatus, but if necessary it will not be difficult to activite them, though after commitment of considerable resources.

Latvia (5) for a long time was rather not in our interest. Despite sizable Polish minority in Dyneburg (lat. Daugavpils) friendly relations with that state and their unwillingness to commit themselves to any larger international projects means it is unlikely we will need to act in this country.
However as a precaution first steps have been made to create a network of agents. Still it remains the only region where clandestine operations are not possible yet and will require additional resources.

ANNEX 1 - 'Office 2 network in other continents - phase one of the operation

polishclaims-worldwide.jpg

As requested by the General Staff (ref 1048/1080) Office 2 started infiltration of Polish communities in other continents.

Currently the most promising and easiest to use community lives in Northern America, especially the USA. Either Polish, of Polish ancestry, or pro-Polish the number of already selected individuals is considerable.
Exceptionally useful proved to be early 'recruitment' in charity organisations such as American Friends Service Commitee.
USA proves to be suprisingly easy to infiltrate given the size and importance of the country. Most likely it is due to very limited experience of their counter-intelligence and lack of funding.

Second most promising are to explore exists in Southern America, especially in Brasil and Argentina with their large Polish communities. Because the General Staff believes it will have small importance to our cause we will limit our activities to establishing an usual network of agents closely cooperating with Section 'B' of the intelligence.

Australia is considered promising future direction of the operations, for now, however our limited resources will mean we cannot commit to much attention to this region.

Asia. Very small Polish communities and decades long contacts with Japanese Kempetai mean it is currently not in our interest to create sizable networks in this region.

Africa. Except Northern Africa and Southern African Republic where our intelligence created small but active networks the rest still remains terra incognita to our organisation. If deemed necessary by the General Staff we will create sufficiently powerful organisation in this area, but not without additional and considerable resources.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

COMMMENT - you might find it suprising, but all the organisations described in this chapter DID exist and in fact according to some recent discoveries I REALLY didn't have to use my imagination - it was enough to present activities which REALLY happened. :D

So you really had good cooperation with Kempetai, sizable network in the USA and the SU, clandestine actions in Czechoslovakia and Germany etc. :)

I don't like how some AARs have placeholders now. When I check for an update, I usually go to the last page and if I see nothing, I go back a page at a time. If there's been a lot of comments after a placeholder's been set, I have to go through all of them just to find the new update. Although it shows there's an update coming soon, it's just not very convenient.

I placed the placeholders for chapter which will essentially introduce to the AAR so these should be kept together.

I have enough material to write 3-4 'action' chapters as well. Those will be placed together AFTER the first placeholders will be filled in which should happen tomorrow or on Wednesday. ;)

Today I do some 'babysitting' (my sister came back from Spain), but tomorrow the placeholders will be filled.

Something special will be done with chapter 3, it is quite probable noone else did something like that before so watch out !

EDIT 'Babysitting' has been prolonged till right now... Updates tomorow morning together with chapter 5, sorry...

I enjoyed that first update, i look forward to reading more.

Nice historical feel to it and the pictures were great.

A world conquest with Poland will certainly be interesting to read, good luck!

CHAPTER FIVE - THE 'UNEXPECTED' CRISIS

winterwarrologue.jpg

Z - so called ZAOLZIE region.

In the second half of 1934 Polish minority in Czechoslovakia started a sieries of protest and strikes demanding more autonomy in the region where they were sizable majority.
Czechoslovak authorities responded using brute force of anti-riot police squads.
One of those demonstrations ended in a bloodshed with an olderly minerr killed and several wounded (including 3 policemen).
Quckly already tense relations between Poland and Czechoslovakia moved towards open hostility.

At the same time Slovak separatists sized town hall in Bratislava and demanded more autonomy as well as recognition 'to the justified demands' they printed on thousands of leaflets thown from the tower of the medieval town hall.

In September 1934 Rusyn people of Transcarpathia followed their example. It was only the question of time before Germans of Sudeten region would join them.

As the situation deteriorated the commander of the Polish army during annual celebration in 'Podlaska' Cavalry Brigade made an openly hostile speech.

1stevent.jpg

"...even now we must be ready to defend our rights, here and abroad. Recently Czechs insulted our nation with open attacks against our brothers in Zaolzie. The same region they deceitfully stolen in 1920 when we were fighting the Red Manace ! Yes the same cowardly Czechs who never fought for their independence as we did. How dare they offend our country and its honour which is priceless ! We don't want a war, but if they do not stop assaulting our Polish brothers in Zaolzie we will have to respond !"

The speech was quickly in virtually all polish newspapers and repeated by other media including radio.

Czechs responded with in a similar way. This rhetorical duel continued for weeks...

==========================================================

30th October 1934

13.00

HQ of Second Infantry Corps in Brno, Czechoslovakia

Colonel Benedek was listening to radio: '...our government will not tolerate blackmail, this is the last day these Slovak extremists cause disturbances threatening peaceful life of ordinary Czechoslovak citizens...'. Suddenly he heard a car stopping with noise on the street below. *Someone obviously is in a hurry* he thought and decided to see who is coming... This was not a military car, but four men leaving it looked much like professionals. After over two decades in the army he could notice such things without a problem. *But it means that...*
*Could it be ? Did they really find out ?* He returned to the fateful night when losing all his money in a cassino his good friend Frantisek offered enough money to pay the debts and start anew if he agrees to do him a small favour. *Very easy money it was...* But soon he was asked for another one and another one. Three years ago he meet enigmatic 'count von Styssel' who offered him more money for larger 'favours'. *That was the day when I have sold my soul...*
'Colonel Benedek ! We need to talk to you !' He heard after energic knocking.
Now he was sure - they are coming for him. About two months ago something has changed, he felt... followed since then. It cannot be a mistake. They are here to arrest him.
*I am a traitor to my country* True, but they will never take him alive...

=========================================================

At 3.00 Poland attacked Czechoslovakia.

First strike was felt by a Czechoslovak Infantry Division guarding passes leading to Poland.

Minutes after the massive assault of 16 divisions including several cavalry units and two mountain divisions

winterwar1.jpg

winterwar2.jpg

another one came from Przemysl targetting an Infantry Division defending Kosice.

Both units were without a chance to stop the attacks.
winterwar3.jpg

Still unusual difficulties in communication which appeared to happen for unknown reasons meant that the rest of the Czechoslovak army was still unaware of the danger.

Only after the lines of defence were penetrated Poland declared mobilisation
At that time first units - cavalry divisions were already in Zilina, soon to be joined by two mountain divisions.
winterwar4.jpg

Without any delay mountain-cavalry corps attacked Bratislava.
winterwar5.jpg

At the same time Polish army from Kosice attacked the isolated czechoslovak force in Presov. The division after half-hearted defence surrendered.

Soon Polish vanguard reached Bratislava while general Rómmel dealt with Czechoslovak infantry corps cut off in Banská Bystrica. Two demoralised, mainly Slovak divisions dissolved after few hours of combat.
winterwar6.jpg

Czechoslovak army managed to defeat the spearhead of the Polish attack in Braislava , but very soon its positions in Brno were under attack.

Chapter Five THE 'UNEXPECTED' CRISIS part 2.

Soon the Czechoslovak force in Brno retreated. At the same time Polish forces in Kraków/Cracov engaged Czechoslovak armoured corps in Ostrava.
winterwar8.jpg

Sadly general Bortnowski launched all out offensive instead of limited action.
Losses were considerable and the attack failed.

Still in the south Brno was taken and a breakthrough was achieved.
'Kresowa' BK was ordered to explore it.
winterwar9.jpg

The war will end soon !

Or so we thought...
winterwar10.jpg

Fortunatelly the new, massive force soon engaged the exhausted Czechs.
General Rómmel's Reserve Army was ordered to secure the flanks of the main offensive.
winterwar11.jpg

Noticing a potential danger to the main forces general Tadeusz Kutrzeba ordered attack to eliminate the danger.
winterwar12.jpg

It failed, but the highly mobile enemy divisions were in no shape to react for days.

While new divisions reached the heartland of Moravia 'Nowogródzka' BK was ordered to cut off supply lines of the valiant defendes in Ostrava.
winterwar13.jpg

Soon we were able to start sizable attack on Prague. Deperate Czechoslovak government pleads for peace. We couldn't care less now...
winterwar14.jpg

Soon it had to escape before our cavalry ! As soon as possible another assault was started on the enemy positions in Pilsen. We will drink your beer in a moment, just wait !
winterwar15.jpg

Except isolated groups of enemy marauders behind our lines the Czechoslovak army was on their knees.

Are you gonna represent the foreign minorities somehow? Perhaps through events? For example, when the Sudetenland crisis occurs, Poles there immigrate to you, giving you a boost in IC and MP? You ARE gonna need it. Could be intresting, too.

Nope, no custom events (not to mention there were no Poles in Sudetenland). I will not make the game easier than it is already.

Same with annexed countries - no new cores for me, nothing. I will release some/most of these with specific explanations why and on what conditions e.g. released Ireland would get Ulster provinces as the prize for joining my alliance.

I will keep major powers occupied though - these are too strong to be allowed even a degree of independence. So after annexing Germany I will keep it under occupation unless I can split it in parts.

Though when mod 34 0.20 is released I will restart my game, play to the moment seen in this AAR and continue with the storyline so no fundamental change will happen.

Something new.

Since I will need a decent navy I came with ideas how to name my ships.
In real life Poland planned to build strong navy eventually, but the ships in possession never were larger than a CL ( ORP Gryf in 1939, Dragon and Conrad in 1944), though Royal Navy offered BB Paris because there were too little Free French ( much less than Poles) to keep it operational.

Historically Polish DDs were named after weather sea conditions - ORP 'Grom' ( Thunder), ORP Burza ( Storm) etc, escort DDs after people from various provinces e.g. ORP Krakowiak ( Cracovian), ORP Kujawiak ( Kuiavian) etc and SS after animals e.g. ORP Dzik ( Boar), ORP Orzel ( Eagle), BUT all those ships are in flotillas in HoI II and only CL and bigger can be named individually.

My concept is to name:

- CLs after cities e.g. ORP Gdynia, ORP Poznan,

- CAs after historical battles e.g. ORP Grunwald, ORP Orsza, ORP Wieden,
- CVs and BBs after historical heroes - kings, generals, scientists so for example you can expect ORP Chopin bombarding enemy shores pobably in a very 'musical' way ;) or ORP Kopernik ( Copernicus) doing some naval strikes with its CAG.
- CVLs will get names from regions of Poland such as ORP Wielkopolska or ORP Mazowsze,

I don't plan to built BCs or AA cruisers available in the mod.

Because I will annex some countries some new ships might get for example Greek crews and will be named accordingly. In case I decide to release a country as a puppet I will give the ship to its 'countrymen' - so Greeks would get former ORP Athens with the ORP removed before such generous act. :D

If I may make a recommendation for your CVs and BBs naming: Casimir Pulaski, a Polish General who served and died in the American Revolution.

Chapter Five The 'Unexpected' Crisis

The last attack was started on the brave Czechoslovak soldiers in Ostrava...
winterwarlaststand.jpg

Soon the Czechoslovakian government accepted our offer of unconditional surrender and Czechoslovakia became a part of Poland.
theendofczechoslovakia.jpg

winterwaraftermarch.jpg

After months of diplomatic strife Europe remained neutral. Only the French decided to make a move to improve relations with Poland.
alliieddyplomacy.jpg

Meanwile a deal was made with Rusyn and Slovak separatist leaders. Slovakia will be given large autonomy on its own, exactly as Transcarpathia with a promise of independence in close future. Bohemia and Moravia will be occupied while Zaolzie will join Poland.

==================================================================

Comments - The warmongering speech had to sound like one, so don't think I really want to support some sort of attempts to take Zaolzie. ;)
I think it is a good feature and will prepare similar texts before future wars.

I decided to keep the whole Czechoslovakia without releasing it.
I can't risk Munich coming in 1938 and Czech capitulation, oh NO !

I need their industry, techteams and need to stop Hitler as soon as possible - so Czechoslovakia will be occupied.

NO SUDETENLAND FOR YOU ! ;)

I hope you enjoyed it. I still need to finish/edit chapter 2... :eek:o

ORP Kazimierz Pulaski will appear - after all it is in our navy even now.

Perhaps as one of new ships made using traded American blueprints. ;)

BTW He had much larger experience and played an important part in Bar Confederacy against Russia

CHAPTER SIX will be titled The 'PEACEFUL' year 1935

I feel bad for Czechoslovakia seeing as how i have a friend from there, but a great victory for Poland none the less! I look forward to seeing what you do next :D

CHAPTER SIX - THE 'peaceful' year 1935

In the aftermath of the conflict with Czechoslovakia quickly known as WINTER WAR several changes in the international situation of the entire central Europe have happened.

Germany still stunned by the bold (and ruthless) move of the Polish governemtn decided to colm down its German 'cousins' in Sudetenland. The Third Reich was still too weak to fight anyone and only some more carefull approach could give substantial profit...hopefully.
Soviet Union protested but its relations with Poland were changing from bad to worse every 4-5 years since ... XVth century... Besides Stalin had no ambition to help anyone except himself and the revolution he planned to 'export' sooner or later.
Hungary as TRADITIONAL Polish friend was more than happy to see the final demise of Czechoslovakia. Celebrations on the new Polish-Hungarian border were organised.
Romania remained friendly towards Poland. Despite its good relations with Czechoslovakia Polish-Romanian 'alliance' against Soviet Union was re-confirmed so it considered its position secured even more.

Only Lithuania protested in the League of Nations which with earlier demonstrations of support to 'victory over Polish aggressors' before Czechoslovak embassy in Kaunas. As earlier the crowd demanded 'returning Vilnius occupied by Polish imperialists' whci usually was ignored by Polish governemtn, but suprisingly not this time.
Poland officially protested in the only place where Lithuania would listen i.e. League of Nations' general assembly. Pilsudski personally asked Luithuanian president 'do you want war, do you want peace - what the hell do you want ?' which started exchange of diplomatic 'insults' between envoys of both states.
Both Latvia and Estonia remained neutral as they were since the begining of the entire conflict in 1919-20.

Office 2 - the summary of the operation 'Janosik '
janosik.jpg

'...Despite lack of time the covert action went suprisingly well. (...) Our operatives in Slovak community managed to disrupt comunications in Presov and Kosice paralising enemy movement which allowed quick breakthrough and literally cut the Czechoslovak army in two halves.

Actions in Zilina and Bratislava regions consisted of several small assaults and two major ones where soldiers of special field units at our disposal secured bridges and stopped enemy attempts to destroy them untill our cavalry arrived.

The only setback was noted in Brno where agent of intelligence nick-named 'Gambler' didn't manage toslow down enemy reserves coming to Ostrava.
We are still unaware what happened - the case will be investigated and we will learn from this little failure...'

====================================================

Time for reports about my technology, production and other events which happened during the next calm months.

TECHNOLOGY

Just before the Winter War was started I decided to start research only in 'infantry' are.
Because without some basic improvements I couldn't even use strategic redeployement, not to mention that infantry 36 as well as BASIC garrison and MP units were beyond my reach too.

technologia1934.jpg

My early production options were really poor at that time...

produkcja1934.jpg

During/just after the war was finished I moved towards other areas.

But even earlier my scientists noted considerable success in the area of secret technology i.e. atomic research...

secretweaponry.jpg

When basic supply technologies were researched and in implementation process decision was made to improve our economy.

technologia1.jpg

Why not War way ?

Because of the massive +10 % to research bonus and because I have blueprints for the technology. It will allow me to research it very quickly which might be priceless...

Another step was to improve basic electronics. It not only adds further +3 % to research but is REQUIRED to research more advanced electronic technologies. Rajski who in real life broke Enigma code was the best for that purpose.
techno2.jpg

========================================================

Production/Politics

One of my first moves in the game was very easy to expect.

More professional army is without any doubts very important in the game.
sliders1934.jpg

After the war with Czechoslovakia was ended. I was given the great opportunity to expand my industry. Though it takes a lot of my resources (all of them in some cases) I took the 'total expansion' as the best option.

Though this way I lose 5 IC for now in time of 2,5 years I will get 12 IC + many other profits.

industry1935-1.jpg
