The Russians have historically preferred quantity over quality/tactics for a very long time, and plenty (if not most) of their victories in battles/wars are hard earned, which is why they didn't have enough population to get rid of the manorial system and establish a more thriving economy like the west. They had some victories in the short run, but lost completely in the long run till now. For a modern period battle example, the battle of Stalingrad ended with Russian defeating the Germans and securing the ruins or whatever that's left of their city. The same can be said for the Germans who fought hard to conquer Europe and ended up having their country in ruins and occupied.
