AHD DD14 – Mapmodes

Time for the first (written) and last AHD DD of 2012! This time it's about the new mapmodes we have added. This is exciting stuff, so without further ado we'll check out the first one:

RGO output.
This one is fairly simple, you select a province and it highlights all the other provinces with the same RGO good. Wondering where to send your armies to “acquire” new sources of specific goods? This is the mapmode for you!

Population density.
This shows how populated provinces are within each nation. Note that all nations are only comparing internal population, so a green state in China or India might still have a lot of pops.
attachment.php

Nationality.
Here we can see the culture of pops in provinces. They are striped to show if a sizable minority is present (over 30% of the total).

Spheres of influence.
This one has two functions. If you select a country it will show the SoI of that country, the master being Green, SoI pets are yellow and Blue are influenced but not in the SoI. Blue or yellow nations are striped red if another nation is influencing them. But if you don't select any nation it shows everyone's SoIs by colouring them with the Sphere-master's colour.

Supply limit.
Oddly enough, this mapmode shows supply limits. It also has two functions. With no army selected it shows general supply limits for your troops in the world, green being the best and red the worst. If you select an army it shows supply limits relative to that army, green are provinces were it would be fine, yellow are marginal, and red are ones where it would take attrition.

Party loyalty.
Can you guess? Yes! This mapmode shows each provinces party loyalty. Look at all that Liberal yellow in Germany while the UK is mostly Conservative with a few Socialist areas.

Ranking.
Coloured by National ranking this mapmode shows GPs in green, secondary powers in blue, civilised nations in yellow and uncivilised in red.

Migration.
No, not the Communist world revolution, all this red just means that people are migrating out of Europe, although for some reason Krakow is popular with Chinese immigrants. Another nice feature is that if you select a province with high migration levels you will get arrows showing you where people are moving to/from.

Civilisation level.
Green nations are civilised, while totally uncivilised nations are black and shade through yellow to green as they advance towards westernisation. Here you can see Japan has started the progress, while Burma and Brunei have made smaller steps.

Relations.
Last, but not least, we have the Relations mapmode. By default it colours countries by how they feel about you, but if you click on someone else it changes to show their relations. Here you can see Germany seems to be on nice terms with the UK and Central Europe, while France and Russia seem hostile, how strange.

Tank time!
First we have the Saint-Chamond. Originally intended to be similar to the Schneider CA, but was modified to have a longer hull in order to mount a larger gun.
Our last tank is the M1917, an American copy of the French FT-17. It may have been said in an earlier DD, but the FT-17 was the first tank with a top mounted rotating turret, the design which almost all future tanks would use.

What units are you disbanding to build new ones? Irregulars to Infantry is the only time it might make sense, but we have added a Build all per continent button anyway.

This was the last diary before release, but next week you will be seeing some AARs and we are planning a Q&A session some time before release day as well with the dev team + betas

This is absolutely great, but I still don't know - and I have asked this around - where exactly should I be looking to find out which resources I should try to aquire either by colonization, protectorate or conquest, other than the top 3 imports? How do I check what is #4 and #5 imports? And should I be looking at anything else other than what's imported because "importing is bad"?
So, in other words, when is this map used?

Mapmode assume you know which good you're after, to find that you can look on the Trade screen's Market activity section. Sort by cost or activity, stuff with a negative cost is imported.

Did anyone answer this? I'm also interested in if AHD handles this.

I've always thought that military (soldiers) should also go down if one decides to build ships ... and thousands of them. You have to man them with something besides ghosts and phantom pops.

we are tweaking costs etc. it is still in Flux(tm)

@podcat: Could you post some infos about your changes to the AI you mentioned in the last DD please?

what were those. I dont remember :D can you quote my old post?

Thought all of this, the outcome is similar to the one we use to get in vanilla when all these big empires do not break up early (that is, never) and I keep thinking that assimilation in Europe and Asia is too much.

I totally second this.

we tweaked assimilation quite a bit this morning, also there is actually a lot of big empires breaking up in AHD. ireland/scottland becoming independent, iceland even etc. russia can fall apart as well unless they become a happy communist paradise

Wouldn't it make more sense to give them a Renault variant, given that in the Post-War era, it was probably the most common tank in the world? At least when it comes to the export market?

We wanted FRA to have a unique one though, and their FT-17 was their best and most widely used model, so it would be a shame to leave them with the SC instead. Having said that, I did say I need to check, or maybe Podcat can confirm which it is.

So I take it that a World Conquest is essentially impossible now, with more potent independence movements the the ability to justify only one war at a time?

its still doable. you can also justify more wars while at war so you can keep conquering etc, but infamy is likely to paint a giant target on your country if you do.

No problem. :)
I was refering to the following quote:

ah yeah, more logical white peaces. I dont remember all the details but for one countries keep track of their war exhaustion a lot more now and dont want to risk it maxing out for no gain and will thus accept white peaces muche arlier. there were also cases where the AI would get stuck and refusing to accept reasonable peace because it got the warscore mixed up that is fixed now. AI is also much better at following up with counter war goals if someone attacks them and they are beating them. before it would happily white peace despite being able to get some good stuff.

Hmm what will be the generic tank model for those nations that didn't have an actual tank, like the Ottomans or Spanish?

the Schneider CA1, see below

But Saint-Chamond was in DD11  It was redesigned? And what about American tank, will it be a variant for countries which hadn't them in real life?

ah someone noticed :D I screwed up in D11 and posted a picture of another tank instead , the one in this diary is the real Saint-Chamond. The one in D11 was the Schneider CA1. sorry about the mixup

I don't understand the population density mapmode, why not just highlight the provinces after number of pops? Or alternatively number of pops compared to the world average pops per province? ¨¨

It looks pretty bad if you have to wait until 1936(after amazing population growth) for a few provinces becoming coloured, as opposed to a completely green map like it probably is at 1836.

I don't think you understood the DD. At no point would you ever have an all green map unless somehow every province in the world had the exact same population...

How is the population density map mode useful in any way? I don't understand why the scale is based on national (and not international) comparison, but it shows every country. If it's going to be national, then just leave the rest of the world grey and only show your own country (then it's marginally useful to see which of your regions are higher or lower populated) or the country you click on. Can anybody clarify to me the utility or intent of this map mode as it is, in its current form?

This way you get the same information you suggest, but you can see it for everyone.

Not sure if this was a map mode, but, is there a map mode that if I click on, say France, I can see their status/relation with every other country. Then I can click on, say Russia, and do the same?

It’ll help me identify potential allies/partners. This would be useful.

Thanks!

Yup, that's the Relations mapmode, rightmost on the 2nd row IIRC, Heart icon.
