Joan of Toulouse (1220-1271) is worthwhile trying to save her dynasty from being absorbed by the Capetians. As she hails from Cathar country and is an Occitan, the playthrough is certainly there for any student of history.

Yeah, that's her alright. Typically I enjoy adopting Cathar heresy and after a successful crusade take back Occitania and exact revenge upon the Capetians by hunting them down one by one..

Irene of Byzantium is also a good shout, given the schism largely arose due to the Bishop of Rome not accepting ecclesiastical authority to a woman.

first empress regnant of the Eastern Roman Empire from 797 to 802.

Therefore not possible to play unless some editing of history files, and also allowing date selection from 769 onwards.

Is present for historical record.

Zoe and Theodara also for record only.

Eudokia Makrembolitissa is already in the list, but historically not recognized as ruler - she was regent several times. Probly the only playable byzantine empress for the whole game??

Upbringing is a little confusing;
After the confirmation of his betrothal, Joan was thereafter brought up at the French royal court. She was thereby not a part of the Occitanian culture, felt no sympathy for the Albigensians /cathars and did nothing to prevent the hunt of them issued by the Inquisition. The date of the formal marriage is not confirmed; both 1234 and 1241 have been suggested, but the former is considered more likely.[citation needed] The couple had no issue.

maybe should be french instead?

reverted to royal domain after her death and husband's death. No issue.

So mostly matches history except her culture. Traits all random.

Yes, I just enjoy role playing as Cathar with Joan given that like Matilda of Italy or Eleanor of Aquitaine, she is a female character with huge... tracts of land and must've been quite a strong character to have survived so long - even if her lands became incorporated into crown lands after 1271. Her designation as "Occitan" makes complete sense, even if historically she shared no affinity for Catharism as her predecessors did.

Another interesting start I found: Violante von Hohenstaufen, bastard of Friedrich II, Holy Roman Emperor.

She is countess of Capua from 1241, but isn't an adult until 1249.

She is Italian despite her German father and is neighbours with a fellow bastard brother with a bigger demesne and a ducal conquest CB.
