Can't grant Duchies

In my Charlemagne game I've just conquered Gascogne from the muslims and created the related Duchy. I wanted to give it to my son an heir, but the "Grant Landed Title" option is greyed out and the tooltip says I don't have any landed title that my son can hold. Currently I hold 5 duchies and 6 counties.

I have already granted him a county within the Duchy of Gascogne, but it won't allow me to grant the duchy itself. Why is this happening?

I was running 2.2 but now I'm running the beta. I'm getting that problem whichever version I run.

EDIT: Current vassal limit is 13/29.

Another possibility is that you need to make him a Count first. So maybe give him a County within the Duchy and see if you can make him Duke after that.

Gavelkind limits what you can give to your heir to make sure that your titles are "evenly" distributed to your other potential heirs upon your death.

Under Gavelkind you can no longer grant duchies and kingdom titles within your dynasty. At least, this is the situation in my last games with the beta patch.

Yes, I tried that. I have him Dax first, and then tried to give him Gascogne. It was a no go.

I thought it might be it, but considering I had so many duchies and not a single landed son I thought I'd be able to grant at least one duchy. Anyway, I just changed to Elective. Thanks!

If this is true, then we really need that will mechanic in the game. Large titles being assigned arbitrarily? Really?
