I don't often play as Japan, normally Germany 1936. However I've recently tried Japan 1941 start.
Whilst it was a satisfying challenge in china and Burma, I found the US naval tactics to be woefully inadequate. The British too for that matter.

I had 3 carrier fleets with 3 in each and the americans hardly had any. Only saw the odd one. Just battleships coming at me to be chased around the pacific and get sunk. It was very disappointing.
Midway and Hawaii both conquered easily. So.. invaded the US.

And here is where my plan backfired. Whilst foot troops are fine in China and Burma, when Patton came rolling down the road in tanks and mechanised INF, my rapid progress was quickly halted. So - a lesson on upgrading there.

However, still very disappointed in the US pacific fleet. I hope they get it better in HOI4.

I agree. The problem is with how it deploys its carriers then. In fact its entire fleet. If the AI thinks BBs and take on CVs then there is a problem.

To be honest it’s not country related, but a human player related problem. Whether I play the UK, Japan or the USA, the country I play always rules the Pacific and destroys the opponents navy. When it comes to naval warfare, the human player can very easily outsmart and destroy the AI Navy in the Pacific.

Considering that, if you stick within range of land-based air power, a GER player can essentially demolish most of the British Navy with just a pair of BBs and some CAs and escorts, Japan in the hands of a human player should be devastating in the Pacific against the AI.

well, that is quite obvious. It would make it more of a fight though, if the AI grouped its CV better with LC and DD. America especially knew the power of CV in the war and simply would not have sent blocks of BB against CVs.

This might be a little out of topic. I play as Japan and (as you all wrote) decimated US navy. Then I invade USA mainland and realise The huge gap between our land unit techs. After a failed attempt to make a solid frontline, I retreated all my troops to each of the west coast ports, 1 full corps each city. Then I use all my air force to slowly kill as many americans as possible. As my inf becomes city hedgehodges, theres nothing the americans can do. When my intel says USA is low on manpower, i simply walk through USA mainland as I did in india (a little resistance near canada and california, but nothing to worry about).

I wonder. Is this possible to happen in real war, or is this one of the 'gamey' style that next HOI should anticipate?

irl if you murderized so many American soldiers that manpower becomes an issue, it would be an attrition problem. And we know how America usually fares when wars of attrition are turned against it instead of prosecuting it. But i don't know exactly how hard the US would fight for its continental holdings if the game wargoal of just chopping off Frisco, LA, and Seattle were to translate to a real life treaty demand.

If the Pacific War is so easy, is it possible to declare on the Americans, Soviets, and European Allies all at the same time and win? What i thought of as gamey is being able to use espionage and diplomatic influence to the point where you can strike south against the European colonies without getting the Americans auto-declaring on you, so you can fight each faction piecemeal
